Kenneth Branagh Talks Thor And Teases The Future Of Donald Blake!

The director discusses the decision to place Thor on Earth rather than in the Viking period, shares his thoughts about how the movie has come together and drops some hints about the future of Don Blake...

On How He Prepared To Take On A Movie Like Thor:

They didn't want anybody coming in just slightly steering the ship, and that's ballsy of them. Certaintly Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr, they just let them run with it on Iron Man. We took about three months of dancing around each other asking, 'How does this work? How do we arrive at decisions?' It feels as though this is as much a picture of mine as any of the other pictures I've directed.

On The Original Plans To Make The Movie Set In Viking Times:

I didn't want to do that. I wanted it to have a contemporary Earth quality - at the very least you'd get some funny fish-out-of-water possibilities of Thor visiting Earth.

On The The Difference To The Comic Books And Possible Movie Future Of Donald Blake:

I haven't absolutely dispensed with it! But...we futz with it. When you have 50 years of comics and thousands of years of myths, both of them doubling back on themselves left, right and center, you keep doors open. You can't help thinking about ways in which storylines might develop in the future.

On Why He Thinks Thor Will Succeed:

Here's what I'm confident about. Every single day, I'm seeing the visual effects cooking, things that three years ago was a concept drawing, a conversation, 50 meetings. So I'm confident that great work has been done by that team, I'm confident that the performances are all extremely compelling. I'm confident that we found a way for it to be funny and that it wears itself pretty lightly...I'm confident that we've tried very hard! The signs are that we might have something.

No everyone, you act like your so sure that this will be one of the best CBMs but you are confusing your great hope with certainty. You have no proof to back up your statements besides a trailer and positive word of mouth from the people who are trying to promote the movie.
If you can get past the fact that your favorite superhero is in action and actually look at the trailer for what it is you will realize that the trailer is not that good.

Your argument is rendered invalid.

I'm pretty psyched about Thor but if anywhere near half the movie is set on earth with a 'powerless' Thor, I'll be very dissapointed. I haven't read the script, nor do I want to ruin things for myself by doing so. Again, I've got high hopes, but so far, the trailers have made me kind of nervious.

Movieman: It's CONFIDENCE! I'm sure, deep down, a lot of us have that tiny worry that something will go wrong (my friend's husband still thinks it looks campy), but when you look at how many great people have gotten involved (lest we forget, J. Michael Stazcynski co-wrote the story the screenplay is based on. If you missed his run on the comics, you really missed out), that Kenneth Branaugh's been wanting to do this for YEARS and Marvel finally has creative control of much of the future work, it's exciting. Yeah, it could fail, but we BELIEVE that it won't. There's NOTHING wrong with that.

I hope some where down the road he appears, but not as Thor´s secret identity. I want him to be just a doctor and ex-boyfriend of Jane.

I've read the script. I have watched this movie evolve from an extravagant sounding rumor to now, and there has not been ONE THING about it that seems off or concerns me this entire time. Total WIN from start to finish. Box office numbers? That's debatable. I don't know what to expect. But this is a quality film with class, heart, timeless themes, and loads of imagination. It OUGHT to do very very well.

Wow. moviemann says one comment about Thor not being good and everyone bites his head off. Jeez, overreaction much. The truth is that Moviemann is right. We have little snip-its here and there that Thor might be good AND might be bad. Just don't attack people for bringing up the bad part. I thought the trailers were cool just because it's Thor and Asgard looks great, but that doesn't mean the movie will be good. I hope it is, but we will see.

i really don't want the Comics Donald Blake onscreen. the general movie going public is filled with idiots who wouldn't understand the Donald Blake into Thor moments.

i wouldn't mind a nod to the character though. something along the lines of Thor goes by the name of Donald Blake while on earth and not with the Avengers.

The problem I have is when he says, they found a way to make it funny. Who wants The Mighty Thor to be funny?

Why do they always think these movies have to have funny moments? Thor should be hardcore and totally kickbutt!

The movie looks good, but please for once leave out the little funny moments.

Godzillafart- x-men first class has a great trailer, cast, director and a good story to tell and ya think it will fail. know why is that? but then ya think this movie will succeed. and a script an cast, and director an trailer doesn't say a movie is good or bad.

First of all, Branagh is talented enough to avoid any awful Schumacher Batman & Robin campy humor. Real life, even when serious, has humor.

Also,he does go by Donald Blake in the film --- well at least for one scene. In the movie, Donald Blake was a doctor who worked with Jane Foster. He either had died or moved to another country. To hide Thor's identity from SHIELD, Foster tells them he is Dr. Donald Blake. So he poses as this Donald Blake in a scene to hide his true identity.
