MCU: Thor and Thor: The Dark World

MCU: Thor and Thor: The Dark World

Reasons Thor is a great movie and my thoughts on the trailer for it's sequel, Thor: The Dark World.

If you ask me, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is epic. Besides the small step back from, Iron Man 2. Iron Man 3 hits the states in a little over a week and I'm for one excited despite the big plot twist (which I will not go into any detail about). Now, this is really just listing reasons why I feel Thor is a great movie in the MCU. It's gotten mostly positive reviews but, mixed feelings from comicbook fans. Outside of Silver Surfer, I really haven't had much interest in the god-like superheroes. Characters like Thor and Superman didn't appeal to me, this being said, I'm glad I watched the film first. Although, I haven't bought any comics from comixology.com but, I did preview some (including Aquaman) and I've honestly been missing out. Anyways, let's get this thing going.

Loki

Let's start with the obvious, Tom Hiddleston's Loki is in greatness, the equal (imo) to Heath Ledger's Joker (hopefully, Thanos will be greater than Loki). Here's what made Loki work for me. Obviously you got a fantastic actor in Hiddleston then, you have a character (I've never read the comics and don't know anything about norse mythology so, I don't know how accurate it is to the material but) who is emotionally damaged. You truly feel bad for the guy and you understand why he does what he does (I love sympathetic villains, much more interesting). If anything, this scene right here sums up why Loki is the best part of Thor.

No powers, more interesting.

Tom Hiddleston and this are the biggest reasons the movie worked for me. I know, Thor is the God of Thunder. We'll be getting all of that in the sequels. Thor with no powers, made for a more interesting first movie. Thor learning humility not only made him an overall better person, he finds love in Jane Foster and learns to appreciate life outside of Asgard. I really think if the story was completely different and the entire movie took place on Asgard and the final battle was on earth or something along those lines. Not only would there be no real connection for it in the MCU and real reason for him to come to Earth in The Avengers, there would be no emotional attachment to these characters. But, because we got to know these characters (Loki is very popular amongst well, everybody) and we see the humanity in them, it makes this world and it's characters more interesting.

It wasn't overly serious

A lot of people expected this to be a more serious movie (as well as expecting the helmet, the character looks insanely better without it). Here was my thought process "It's a Marvel movie, therefore It should be really good and lots of fun". Key word there: FUN. You have the deep, more serious movies at DC. Marvel is getting more serious with each sequel and what not and believe it or not, The Avengers was the most serious and the "darkest" of the MCU until Phase Two. Iron Man 3 looks dark and Thor: The Dark World looks even darker (much darker compared to it's original) but, who says they still can't have the Marvel fun? Thor is like the original Spider-Man and the first Iron Man movie. You've got the action but, you also get tons of fun, wit and humor with it. Who wants an overly serious movie outside of Batman, The Punisher, DareDevil, Ghost Rider, ect. Honestly.

Emotional weight

This is the last, big reason I have for Thor being a great movie and one of the best Marvel has to offer, yet. As much as I love, The Avengers and think it's the best comicbook movie ever, it has the same problem I feel other superhero movies lack. Emotional weight. Outside of Captain America: The First Avenger (best solo movie in my opinion until I've seen Phase Two), Thor has the most emotional weight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one of the Marvel movies that does have emotional weight. Thomas Jane's Punisher had it, how it keeps getting over looked and War Zone is favored between the two, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea. I prefer Thomas Jane's Punisher but, anyways. The scene with Loki that I posted earlier, the scene with Thor trying to lift Mjolnir, you truly feel bad for the characters in this world. You could argue it doesn't have that much emotional weight because there aren't that many scenes that have it. But, The two scenes I just mentioned is all that needed to show it and prove it. Well, for me anyways.

That's about it for Thor now, my thoughts on Thor: The Dark World trailer. More epic than what Iron Man 3 looks like, a well deserved sequel to Thor and, continuing the epicness from The Avengers and into Phase Two. Really want to see what Kurse is going to look like. Thor was not a great movie. There is no emotional weight in Thor. Example of emotional weight is Bruce in TDKR seeing his city being destroyed and not being able to do anything about it at the moment. We see him develop as a character for 3 movies and feel for him when he is at that state of being helpless. Another example is Ironman when Stane grabs Stark arc reactor and we see Tony probably at his lowest after he has learned form his mistakes and is being more humble at trying to make the world a better place by his action for helping people and not form the weapons he makes. To see the person he has looked up too be the one who befriends him just makes it that more emotional. Those are great emotional parts that have tremendous buildup.

He is put on Earth to learn humility from his mistakes and all he did on Earth was get drunk and be the butt of every joke. Him unable to pick up the hammer is not him learning humility. He did not spend no time on Earth nor did he see anything in humans to even be remotely have a connection with them. Especially the love interest.

Hiddleson is good as Loki. The writing for his action needs to be better. He is more jealous at Thor being about to be king than he is being an child of a frost giant. He always mentions Thor being Odin's fav but we never get to see any of that. They missed a whole period of the childhood of Loki which I think would have gave a better developed villain. Instead they just went straight to adulthood and gave away who they thought was under the attack right in the beginning of the movie. Acting is half of what makes a character and writing is the other half. Joker has both and he is one of the few villains that has character development all the way through the movie.

Thor is not in the same league as Ironman 1. Nor is Avengers for that matter. Thor: TDW trailer was alright at best. I'll wait for the 2nd one to show me something better. Nowhere near as great as the Ironman 3 trailers.

Thor wasn't the greatest of Phase 1 but his and Cap's origins had to be told...

Now their done and dusted, on to better things.

I loved all of Marvels movies so far and loved BB TDK but TDKR fell flat to me. It just wasnt Nolans best and you can tell he let his lil brother have more control. Anyway I see a lot of DC vs Marvel on this site and I try not to be biased but I like Marvels effort more. MOS looks to be legendary and TDK trilogy was great but T:TDW and IM3 will have better action and story IMHO. You can tell MCU really cares about what they are doing and WB is trying to capitalize on a phase. I really want someone at DC to take a good position at WB and put love into the entire universe so I can see Deathstroke and Brainiac on screen in this century.

Personally, I thought Thor was the worst of the MCU so far. Loki, the battle against the frost giants and the Hawkeye cameo are the only things I enjoyed about that movie. It was just super duper cheesy, hated Natalie as Foster. The action aside from the frost giants scene was just weak. Thor looked weak, Overall I didn't find it enjoyable in the least.

Iron Man 3, Wolverine and Man of Steel will be better than Thor 2. I hope it does well, but I wouldn't bet on it because I thought the first one was absolutely lame.

I would rank THOR 2nd best out all the phase 1 movies behind the 1st Iron Man. I'm excited to see where they go with Thor in The Dark World now that his origin is out of the way

i agree with all your points on thor and its sequel, including your quip on thoms janes punisher. by far a better film than war zone. however, I didnt love captain america first avenger, I would really like to hear your reasons on why you favor it as the best solo film?

I liked Thor, but it would have been great if they had included all of the deleted scenes in the actual film. They cut out a lot of good stuff there. They showed more of where Loki was coming from, explained his abilities better, and were just awesome.

Captain America is the most emotional one in my opinion. The only problem with that film was rushing the second half. That movie could have easily been 3 hours without boring the audience. I would have liked to see the adventures in WW2 more, as opposed to the montage that we got. But the beginning and end of that movie had more heart than all of the other phase 1 movies combined.

All you Thor and Captain America haters must have been too busy making out with your girlfriends in the theaters. If you actually watched the film then you would see that they are the best of all Marvel films. If there is any movies that need to be scrutinized it's the first two Iron Man films. There was not nearly as much action as there is in The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. Also the primay villain in the first Iron Man movie did not appear until the finale. The best comic book movies have the main villain as a threat throughout the entire film. However, despite all that I still think that Iron Man is a good film and would watch any day of the week. I am also going to be one of those people that is diiferent from the group and say that Iron Man 2 was a good film. It wasn't great but it had good action scenes, we see character development in Tony Stark, and of course War Machine makes his debut.

Iron Man II was great in my opinion. They should have given more depth to Whiplash, but I loved every minute of that film.

I just don't think people get Thor when they say "Thor had no emotional wieght. He lost everything in that movie. He was banished from home and from all his loved ones. He then found his right arm aka Mjolnir and was not able to lift it. Seeing the symbol on the hammer knowing it was him no longer being worthy. That was an aweseome scene in the rain. Very emotional if you get what the hammer means and represents to Thor. Then Loki told him Odin had died due to his actions. He was broken and beaten down worse than Tony Strak in Iron Man 1. Then at the end to redeem himself he made the ultimate sacrifice.

I just don't think some people truly understood what he went through in that movie. I loved Thor. Hoping Thor 2 will be even better.
