The Marvel Cinematic Universe Expansion: The Thor Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Expansion: The Thor Universe

Taking a look at characters not yet shown on the big screen, were can they be incorporated in films? Taking section by section, character by character I'll try and show just about every character that's at least worth screen time. Starting with the Thor universe.

This is the beginning of a series about what characters I think can show up on screen.  Characters tied to certain heroes that at least deserve a chance on the big screen.  We will look at what they could be used for and whether or not I think they should be added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  I decided to start with what I think is the largest solo universe besides spider-man in marvel, and that’s Thor.

First we will start with villains, again I must stress I’ll spoil some things from Thor: The Dark World.
  1. Surtur
http://samburleystudio.com/folio/images/pictures/portfolio/mainGallery/large_original/large10_Surtur.jpg

Besides Loki, Surtur is probably Thor’s greatest villain, and certainly the most powerful.  I think undoubtedly we will see Surtur as the main villain in a movie.  He has an army of fire demons, wants to kill everyone in Asguard, what’s not to love about this guy?  Not much else to dive into other then I think he should be the main villain in a 4th Thor film, if they don’t make four Thor’s then he should be in the Third.
  1. Enchantress and Skurge

Ah the Enchantress and her executioner.  Again great villains of Thor, and enchantress’ sister was on Agents of Shield last episode.  Might I add she was interesting too, which means that Enchantress could work on the big screen.  Enchantress is a good rival of sif as well, and I think she should be the main villain in the 3rd Thor film (again if they make 4 of them).  They have the great duo of magic and strength to cause some damage to Thor.

  1. Hela

Hela, ruler of Hel.  She keeps the dead and it’s a little creepy, which is why she’s perfect.  Odin was missing at the end of Thor: The Dark World, so Hel is the first place that popped into my head.  I think it would make a good sequence to have Thor and the warriors three trying to save him from the land of the dead, taking out Hela in the process.  I think Hela would be a good villain to support in the Third Thor film along the Enchantress and Skurge.
  1. Ulik
Most powerful of the rock trolls, Ulik is not enough to be a solo villain.  So what do I think Ulik should do?  Well Marvel movies like to open a film with a minor character of some kind, I think this is the one.  Ulik could be doing some evil work of some kind, bringing Thor from Asguard to kill him.  Would be a cool way of introducing Thor for the third or fourth film, and it would be a heck of a sequence.  Obviously Thor would end up killing him, but Ulik is worthy of a small fight scene.

  1. Ymir

Ymir is the only giant who is close the power Surtur is at… which is why I like him.   The two of them have had a rivalry in the past, why not bring it up in the movie.  There would be nothing better than seeing two giants duking it out against each other.  Until finally of course Surtur would kill him.  Perhaps Odin had given Ymir Surtur’s sword for safe keeping (it would actually make a lot of sense due to the fact he hates him) because he knew Ymir wouldn’t ever give it to him.  Either way a small amount of time for the great ice giant would be great.
  1. Midgard Serpent

The Midgard Serpent is an interesting villain.  It always is around the realm of Midgard waiting to strike.  I don’t know enough about the character to really judge whether or not the character should be in a film or not.   But I don’t know where it would fit in, perhaps enchantress could summon it to attack Thor at one point.  Perhaps it could attack earth, but until I really find a good reason I say he should stay out of films at this point.

That’s it for the villains,  I think it would be cool to incorporate them into films at this time.  I think Enchantress and Surtur should be main villains, the other ones should have small sequences (like Kruse in Thor: The Dark World, and Krog the Kronan).

Now for supporting characters.
  1. Beta Ray Bill

Beta Ray bill is one of the more interesting characters in marvel.   Home destroyed by Surtur, able to pick up Thor’s hammer.  Needless to say we want him in the MCU. Well there’s probably only one way to make him, and that’s have him like the comics.  His home gets destroyed, and he flees.  Probably to Asguard were he gets in a fight with Thor, picks up his hammer, and away with it.  In the fourth film with Surtur of course is where I feel he needs to be.

  1. Balder
Long lost brother of Thor… ok maybe not long lost, but he has been in the movies.  Balder needs to show up especially now with Thor not wanting to take the Throne.  There has to be some reason he left, or thought he was dead, whatever.  But either way he should come back, prove his worth, and become king after the third, maybe fourth film.
  1. Hercules

By Hercules I mean the Olympians in general.  Ares and Hercules I think should get a film in the MCU.  Why not? The Hercules brand has gotten slowly more and more boring, clash of the titans was again Olympian territory, two Hercules movies just this year.  A way to spice up the genre is to make it in the Marvel Universe.  You could have it take place in either modern day or the past with him leading up to the modern day.  But either way bring it on with Ares as the villain.  Now, I think he could appear in a Thor film in order to give him more validity in his own film.

So there you have it everyone, my characters I think should join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  If we saw all of these characters, I feel Thor’s universe would be complete! Next up is Captain America’s villains supporting characters and so on.

I would love for a Hercules movie, but really only because I want Ares, and thus a step closer to Dark Avengers.

It's really tough though, with the two Hercules movies you mentioned coming out now. Maybe in two years, Marvel can flex that muscle without seeming like it's just yet another Hercules movie. But having him and the other Olympians show up in Thor 3 as contemporaries of the Asgardians is a perfect idea.

They need to amp up everything in the next Thor tbh. It's his last solo movie so I pray they get it right b/c so far....it's been all about Loki.

Ummmm.....quite frankly, we probably don't need anymore solo Thor movies. Just have him be in Avengers, and maybe at some point have Enchantress be in one of them. I personally have no use for the rest of these characters. (In particular, Thor comes from Norse mythology. Let's keep Greek mythology out of it.)

@dethpillow

Good stuff. Excellent usage of a Loki/Enchantress/Skurge alliance.

My favorite part though is the part where there's no Jane.

"In particular, Thor comes from Norse mythology. Let's keep Greek mythology out of it."

I think we all get that, but Olympians and Asgardians both not only exist in the Marvel Universe, but also see each other as contemporaries. It isn't completely bizarre for them to somehow appear in a Thor movie.

"we probably don't need anymore solo Thor movies."

Eh, maybe not...but the ending of the second one certainly left them an open door. Also, they're already working on the script for a third one, so there's that.

Well I want to see more Thor movies. I think dethpillow's ideas are rad. Del Toro would be a fantastic choice for the next Thor film. I highly doubt Taylor is coming back. The Russos just raised the bar. Marvel is great at finding talent. They are going to bring in someone new with a clear vision and a real passion for Thor and his world.
