THOR 3D Got Beat By Fast Five In Australia!

THOR 3D Got Beat By Fast Five In Australia!

Well, this is definitely little surprising. Marvel Studios' upcoming big screen adaptation of Thor in 3D got beat in Australian box-office by the fifth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise. Hit the jump for details!

While the US box-office weekend will probably (hopefully!) be big for Paramount and Marvel Studios' Thor, as of now the opening numbers in Australia are not that great for the 3D comic book adaptation. Deadline reports:

Day Two of Fast Five beat Thor by 38% -- $2.02 million U.S. dollars vs $1.5 million U.S. dollars -- even though both films are playing in the same number of theaters (220), Fast Five is only 2D so can't command the higher 3D ticket prices, and Thor's lead Chris Hemsworth is Australian. Universal is crowing that its Day 2 of Fast Five was ahead of Iron Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 and its cume there is now $4.43 million U.S. dollars.

I still believe that Thor will be a hit at the box-office, but it is odd to see that it got beat by Fast Five. What are yout thoughts on this?

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman, Thor is set to hit US theatres on May 6!

Not shocked, saw the latest trailer for Fast Five and it looks like they really pulled out all the stops for this one. It's not on number five for no reason, there is plenty of ppl who will be going to see it. Like myself, i will be seeing both of them.

I'm actually looking forward to Fast Five, but I'm really surprised its beating THOR. This just goes to show you never truly know how well a movie will do.

Are Australians just desperate to see guns on film, since they basically can't own any?

I'm still thinking its going to own the box office in the U.S.

This saddens me deeply. Hemsworth is a newcomer, but choosing a f*cking car chase movie with Vin Deisel and Paul Walker over a modernized tale of Norse gods with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman? WTF?! The end times are truly nigh. :(

I am not really surprised. This is the 5th installment to a series that has been huge from the first film. They have changed the leading roles around and now have a movie that includes all the Leads of the Previous Franchises as well as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a antagonist/hero role. The leads include 4 men that women love and men suffer Mancruches over. It is truly a winning Formula. I mean have you seen the promo for this movie? How about the car chase Chevy commercial? Brilliant! Thor was released in Australia a month short of the promo beginning for the film on heavy broadcast.

Thor will still do fantastic, especially here in the states and possibly in the UK. But Fast 5 will be it's global competition. What scares me is The Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, X-Men: First Class, the final Harry Potter Film. Green Lantern, Thor and Cap have a hell of a lot to compete with!

As many have said above, that's not too suprising....it's an established franchise over a new one. I tell you what tho, i'm just as excited for Fast Five as I am for Thor!

They will both be getting my money.....so no harm done.

Fast and Furious is about crime. and australians are decendants of criminals. its simple logic.

I'm not surprised Fast Five did well. Everyone above me that mentioned the fact that it's an established franchise has a point. I guess I'm just more shocked by the overall numbers. I can't really understand why people would rather watch formulaic, mind- numbing, action bullshit over something as literary and iconic as Thor. I guess it all boils down to interest in the subject matter, as I have yet to see any of the Fast Furious movies. To each his own I suppose. *sigh*

Fast 5 will make its money early and fade fast. Thor will have legs and be a longer draw at the box office - as long as the reviews hold up.

And as soon as women start cooing over Hemsworth and spreading the word of his hottidude to their girlfriends, like the herpes virus it will spread.

Speaking in broad generalities but from what I understand aren’t Australians less fantasy minded than the USA?

That's what Marvel gets for opening it in Australia first. Should've been a glodal release or in the UK or US first. I don't think this really has any stock because the FnF's movies suck a huge bucket of ass. Paul Walker....what a joke.

If you read the description it says that Fast Five did better in Australia than both Iron Man 2 AND Spider-Man 3. So you KNOW this isn't an indicator of the global market.

No offense, but you Aussies have shit taste in movies. The trailers for Fast Five made it look REALLY stupid....

The thing you have to release Fast and the Furious is a popular franchise since the first movie. Yeah the series went down a little when Tokyo drift came out, but yet it picked up steamed when the last film with the two original stars came back to the franchise. Fast Five is sort of like the Avengers of the FF movies because they have all the stars from all the sequels in this movie. Then you finally have the Rock and Vin Disel in a movie together going toe to toe.

Don't forget Thor is a big movie for marvel because alot of people do not know of thor, so its a good thing the two movies do not release at the same time in the states because both movies would be split. Thor might get the upper hand because its a pg marvel movie that is also marketed toward kids with toys and etc. Fast plays toward a larger demographic such as different minority groups, 18 and up gta call of duty crowd. The thing is the same coward that does not want to see thor wants to see captain America because in a way out of thor and green lantern(which Im looking forward to most) he is the spider-man of the group. Also this same crowd believe it or not wants to see the new x men movie as well.

kind of surprising, yes, specially in the country of the main star...

what could one of the reasons?....

maybe the Thor trailers werent good enough for the australians...

I remember seeing every past FnF movie and I pretty much laugh at some of absurd and over the top stunts and themes it's gone through over the years. I like 'em, but not really that much of an over-fan of it, I usually don't watch it in the theaters and just wait for the DVD releases.... I guess some viewers prefer mindless entertainment over substance... shallow, almost plot-hole-filled storytelling over something that has been thought out more... I mean, I barely even remember the damn stories to the the past FnF movies and all I remember are the chase scenes, the cars, the "explosions", and the chicks.... but most especially the cars.

Meh, it's a franchise with a broad fan base already, so it's not surprising that people go with what they know before watching something else that's testing the waters for the first time as a new franchise. I wouldn't exactly call the current tally in Australia as a benchmark for the worldwide release and end tally for Thor... it still has a long way to go as a movie in spite of it's early bird release in the land Down Under.

I just used the movie application on my phone and checked out Thor. Critics are giving it a 91% approval rating. Too me this is shocking and unexpected. At most I was thinking 75 or 80%.

Too me this is a good sign for long term sucess. If a movie is good word will get out. Thor will probably beat Fast Five even in Austrailia.
