Thor Casting Update: Charlie Hunnam

We've got another name in the hat for the lead role in Marvel's Thor movie.

Sounds like IGN caught up with Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam at the premiere for Mutant Chronicles, starring Hunnam's Anarchy co-star Ron Perlman. Charlie was asked about the recent report that he was up for the lead role in Marvel's Thor movie.

Hunnam confirmed that he has screen tested for the part and when asked if the screen test consisted of wearing a pointy helmet and running around with a large Hammer, Hunnam replied, "Something like that."

Hunnam could not confirm that he has indeed landed the role but says that his agents have been talking back and forth with Marvel. Hunnam thinks that since Marvel pushed back the start date of Thor a couple months the studio is taking there time searching for the perfect actor to fill the God of Thunders boots.

Hunnam's credits include the films Children of Men, Cold Mountain, Nicholas Nickleby, and the TV series Undeclared and Queer as Folk.

Hmm...This guy looks the part, and he looks a little bigger than Skarsgard...if he bulked up i think he'd be a great pick...his acting isn't bad either

Im not sure i remember this dude from anything even though iv seen most of the stuff you listed in the article! Thats never a good sign. Was he the motorbike riding scumbag that shoots Julianne Moore in Children Of Men? Guess he looks the part anyway..sort of

I dont know this guy but as long as he got enough acting chops, he looks perfect under that helmet!

Acting is pretty good. If he bulked up and got some longer hair yup perfect.

*general cynicism*

eh he might be ok... Who knows. But when you look at this dude does he reaally say "GOD" to you? hmmmmmm

They need a very large man to play this role, but it seems pretty clear that this director doesn't care about that.

So picture this guy in a rubber muscle suit and stack shoes like Juggernaut in X3.. like my avatar. That's what they are leaning toward with this.

He could work
ManThing

lol I remember this guy now... he played that sick [frick] with the long blond hair in Cold Mountain. One of the evil "home guard" dudes. Generic bad guys.

huh...

anyway he did fine as I recall, but his character was a bloody maniac.

I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE SKARSGARD. HE LOOKS WAY MORE LIKE THOR.

This guy was in Green Street with Elijah Wood. And of course, Sons of Anarchy. I think he would be good, but I would rather see him take up the role of the Joker after Ledger if they decide to do that. He's been my pick since last summer....

He was Bosie in Cold mountain! The crazy blonde gunman, he could do a Loki, but I'd have to hear more dialouge from him for Thor. What am I saying branagh is perfect for Loki already, so they don't need to hire anyone.

Every actor we've heard so far has had the look of Thor or been pretty close without needing much more than a gym session. I'm not saying these choices are wrong but just want to throw this into the pile to make us think;

Hugh Jackman tested for Wolverine with a perm.
Orlando Bloom had short brown hair before becoming Legolas.
Vinnie Jones was a talentless shrimp before becoming a talentless bulk.

My point (other than starting strongly and fading from there on) is this, why are they only looking at blonds? Look for people with "potential to become Thor" along side people who already look like him. That way you have a much larger pool of talent to choose from.

I think he'll be a good thor. Son's of anarchy is a kick ass show, and it doesn't take that long to bulk. Hugh Jackman did it. I hope poeple don't think he was that buff before X-Men.

Howlett04.....i totally feel your pain but i think the director wants to be as original as possible when it comes to picking out the god of thunder....why give the critics something to talk about....i personally think there are blondes out there that can play this part and if bulking up is all thats left then thats easy to handle...but i assure you, if a dark haired bloke is picked to play thor....a bunch of peeps up here will be the first to freak out!!

You misunderstood my comment, or I didn't make it clear. My point was that a dark haired actor can easily dye his hair so why limit the choices to natural blonds.

I have faith in the director, he is a purist and I'm sure we will get a good Thor from him.

@Crusader
You're definitely right. I was watching X-Men one yesterday and during the Cage fight you can tell how much Hugh bulked up. In one he is lean with minor definition but in the next films he is straight up ripped. I'll give anyone with acting chops a chance.

@ JAMESH @ Yeah! An he better be wearing the HELMET!!! If we get that crappy assed ULTIMATE green peace version with the stupid Hammer, i ain't never gonna watch it!!! Man, this movie needs to be EPIC, and most of it set in the past! LOTR Style! ; )

I heard the film will be set entirely in the world of Asgard and not in our universe. With the possibility of a "link to our world" at the end to tie it in for Avengers.

Have no fear, we won't have the stupid green peace hammer. Thor will be Timmy Mallet with his trusty spongy yellow and pink hammer! (only UK readers will get that).

If this Guy just BUSTS SOME PUSH-UPS...He'll be Cool with me for the Roll!

Just make his Suit look like the Old School Mighty Thor and its All Good!

Cool @ HOWLETT04 @ Thanx! Thats the stuff im talking about, will be much better set in ASGARD or the past than in our time!!! An a big YES to ending up here near the end for THE AVENGERS!!! Timmy mallet!!! Heh heh, i hope your right about the HAMMER man!
ManThing
ManThing - 4/22/2009, 2:42 PM
@ Thorverine I feel ya shawty... I too am seriously concerned that this will be a total trainwreck. There's just way too many ways for them to go wrong.

@ Howlett Good point.

@ LEEE7777 : TOTAL AGREEMENT

And for those of you that are saying he just needs to buff up a little, that guy would need the best genetics possible, the best trainer in the world who puts him on the best training routine ever devised, weekly rounds of steroids, and the best recovery process money can buy (deep tissue massage, professional heat/cold application, extreme protien ingestion) and vast sums of impossible luck to get anywhere near as beefy as Thor. Thor is HUGE. This guy is not huge, and I truly doubt he can get that way before filming.

THEY WERE THINKING BRAD PITT TOO..THEY SHOULD KEEP IT IN ASGARD AND END IT ON EARTH AT THE LAST LAST PART AS AN EASTER EGG. ASGARD ROMPS ARE WAY MORE EPIC AND EXCITING, ITS LIKE LORD OF THE RINGS WITH STEROIDS AND VIAGRA
TheMyth
TheMyth - 4/22/2009, 5:45 PM
I've seen several of his above cited appearances and didn't know it was the same actor. He would certainly need to bulk up, other than that I don't hate this idea.
BaronBubba
BaronBubba - 4/22/2009, 5:47 PM
I could see this guy... It's a shame that the government banned roids in all uses, though... A good needle of Barry Bonds Magic would turn this guy into a bonafide Thor...

He'll need at least 20 more pounds, at least 15 of which is pure muscle mass.
Joker1zero
Joker1zero - 4/22/2009, 5:57 PM
I think he would make a good Joker if they ever decided to replace Heath Ledger. He looks like Heath but I would need to see more of his acting skills.

I think Joseph Gorden Levit could be a good joker, the resemblance is uncanny
