SPOILERS: THOR: RAGNAROK Director Explains That Surprising Cameo From Hollywood A-Lister

Thor: Ragnarok features a fair few surprising cameos but perhaps the biggest comes in the form of an A-List Hollywood actor taking on an unexpected role. How did he land a part here? Read on for details.

When the God of Thunder returns to Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok, he finds Odin (Loki in disguise) watching a play depicting the events of Thor: The Dark World. Shockingly, Jason Bourne star Matt Damon is playing the God of Mischief, while Thor is playing by Chris Hemsworth's older brother Luke (Westworld) and Odin is Sam Neil (Hunt for the Wilderpeople). So, how did Damon join the MCU?

Well, during a recent interview to promote the release of the Marvel Studios threequel, director Taika Waititi revealed that Chris and Matt are very good friends and that Loki would want an A-Lister to portray him. That begs the question; is Damon playing himself playing Loki or just an Asgardian actor?

"Well Matt and Chris are very good friends," he explains. "We were looking for someone to play Loki and it felt like if Loki was going to write a play about his death he’d want the star of the Asgard theater scene to be in the play." The only downside to this cameo is that it probably limits the chance of Damon landing a leading role in a future Marvel movie but who else is there really left for him?

As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on that and this news in the comments section below.

BRAVO! That was a funny scene in a very funny movie. I actually left the theater saying, "I want to see it again!" Because of the humor. I'll definitely buy the bluray for all the extras and bloopers. I haven't liked a Marvel movie since WS so Marvel, well done.

What another waste he could have played a super hero . There are lots left . Do we have Nova yet or Hyperion or Sentry ? we could go on all day .

Who else is there left for him to play? Must really think that marvel comics only revolve around the avengers & their supporting characters. There's an armada of characters yet to be introduced, dudr could play warlock, moonknight, sentry, ghost rider, bullseye, mysterio, morbius, etc

Although my first choice for Cable was Mel Gibson, Matt Damon could have done it too. My concept would have had a much older Cable for the first 90-95% of the movie then have a younger Cable time travel setting up a younger Cable for the sequels. Would have showed a much more seasoned battle worn Cable past his prime, followed by a younger actor who could then portray him for years to come with everyone kinda knowing where he'd end up
