Yesterday, Marvel Studios announced that Craig Kyle, executive producer of Marvel's Thor and Thor: The Dark World, will be collaborating with Christopher Yost to write the screenplay for the next installment of Thor. What will Thor 3 be about? Well, as pointed out by our own, DCMarvelFreshman, Craig Kyle had strongly hinted in the past that he'd like to explore the Ragnarok storyline from the Thor comic books. Drew McWeeny of Hit Fix believes his sources know what Thor 3 will be about.
"More importantly, if my sources are correct, the end of "Age Of Ultron" sets up a difficult situation for Thor as Midgard and Asgard find themselves looking at a possible war. Could we be looking at the beginning of Ragnarok, brought on by Loki in the guise of Odin? Could the third film find Thor having to fight against the realm that he's spent so much time defending?" Drew McWeeny of Hit Fix

Alright, so what's this Ragnarok story arc that you speak of? First you have to understand what Ragnarok, aka “The Doom of the Gods” is. Simply put, it's the end of the world, according to Norse mythology. In the Marvel universe, Ragnarok is an apocalyptic-battle that the Realm of Asgard has experienced over and over and over again. See, Ragnarok is a cycle of death and rebirth. The Asgardian Gods are slaughtered and then are revived with no knowledge of what took place. Why is this taking place? Well, there are these celestial beings that are the gods of gods, called Those Who Sit Above In Shadow. These beings live off of the Asgardians death and rebirth. They need this cycle to continue in order to survive. When Thor is made aware of this cycle he is furious, as it robs his people of their glory and memory. Their life is meaningless. From that point on, Thor vows to restore his people's glory by ending the cycle. This will require Thor to form an unlikely alliance with his arch-nemesis Surtur. To read all of the details, click here. That article will explain it better than I ever could.
Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD was directed by Alan Taylor and starred: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Zachary Levi, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Christopher Eccleston, and Idris Elba.

I agree they're starting to fall in the sucky territory. if only they just focus on depth instead of comedy.

I love the stories of Asgard on screen. I can't wait for more. Thor v Surtur should be an awesome fight scene.

The Dark World was a movie Feige wanted out of the way... We heard nothing about the film until October or something. It was a bottle-movie (or whatever you call it :P).

The way Thor 2 came together gave me the impression that they had more than the usual level of difficulty in the editing room.

The humour wasn't too great of an issue for me. If they had devoted more time to the actual villain of the piece, and made Thor's arc a little more gripping, then I would have forgiven a goddamn fart joke if there had been one (not really though).

Yup - Iron Man, Cap, Thor and... Avengers (Avengers 3 - 2018???)?

Thor was a great way to introduce the character and was a great film. Thor: The Dark World was as good, would've been better if Malekith would have been a more interesting villain. Great, fun two films. Thor 3 should be a war movie, Surtur as the main villain with Loki's story wrapped up (Thanos killing him at the end of the movie, leading into Avengers 3 cause let's face it, Thanos wouldn't forget Loki failing him). I think it would be a great way to end his trilogy. A lot of people rag on the humor but, especially the darker tone of the second one, humor is a great way to balance the seriousness. Haters hate, this is my opinion.

Good point. Even if Winter Soldier and GOTG end with cliff hangers, Thor's story is really the only one that can't effectively be addressed outside of a standalone sequel. Hopefully Loki's plan is revealed sooner rather than later.

Thor was mediocre and Thor: The Dark World okay. So, the third movie has the potential to be the first good movie about the god of thunder.

After the announcement of Thor 3 and Cap 3, all my hopes for a Hulk movie in Phase 3 are gone... Now we'll probably get Thor, Cap, Strange, Panther and maybe Inhumans. Damn it Marvel, I really wanted a Hulk movie with Ruffalo!!
TelaVizion
TelaVizion - 1/30/2014, 1:24 AM
And that's how you finish his solo movies. Tony "retired", and you have Thor deal with the end of times. Best way to finish Cap's solo is to either kill him off (and maybe do the whole Bucky/Cap - without a new Cap franchise), or have him "retire" and take over SHIELD).
TelaVizion
TelaVizion - 1/30/2014, 1:28 AM
For alll of you that thought Thor was "eh", you just gotta watch it again. I felt the same way at first (it was still better than Cap 1), but when I went to the Thor 2 marathon and seeing it again, there was nothing wrong with it. Thor was actually done pretty well.

Marvel is doing a great job with telling these stories. Just look how great the Iron Man quadrilogy was done. Having him "retire" was the perfect way of ending his solo franchise.
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 1/30/2014, 1:36 AM
@televizion: Cap is my favorite solo movie so far. I think like Thor 3, Cap 3 should be a war movie. Have Cap retire at the end and when Thanos arrives in Avengers 3, Cap suits up and takes leadership on last time in a final battle.

I've seen CA: TFA 3 times and I liked it every time. I've seen Thor 4 times, the first I found it ok, after the second it was boring (idk, must be the lame final battle). TDW could have been much better (less Darcy, more character development for Malekith) and TWS looks great so far in the trailers.

Marvel shouldn't limit themselves by stopping at 3. They could go beyond trilogies with these characters.

Having said that, Thor 3 shouldn't be Ragnarok. We hardly got to see Asgard and the Asgardians and people want things to be destroyed already. Not cool.

Complain that Marvel has made successful films that happen to have comedy in them. Meanwhile, DC is still having trouble getting out of the gate, and continues to stumble over TELEVISION shows involving their biggest characters. AoS, Joss threw a bone to Disney. They made money and capitalized of the Avengers being so well received. There's nothing more to that. The only good DC has done for it's Cinematic universe is Man of Steel.

Ragnarök means the end of the cosmos in Norse mythology so gods are probably going to die in the movie...i hope

Ragnarok being the main focus of Thor 3 sounds like it'll be awesome. I'll be looking forward to it if it is the main focus of the film. I'm thinking the third Thor film should be some what epic and should stray away from Earth and have Earth featured for only 10 % of the film. I know it'll be expensive but Marvel Studios films recently have not being failing at the box office.

Hire the person that directed and filmed the opening battle sequence of Thor: The Dark World.

"Could the third film find Thor having to fight against the realm that he's spent so much time defending?"

Bollocks don't agree with this sentence...Thor would easily side with Midgard over Asgard...even against his Father if necessary!!! (which obviously he won't have to as we know its Loki...)

Also in Norse Mythology Ragnarok is not the 'end of the world' its the end of the Norse Gods, the eternal Winter...doesn't mean the end of Midgard...

Not quite sure how they would setup Asgard attacking Earth...although would make for an interesting story...would love if they involve Sutur considering we got a glimpse of Muspelheim in Thor 2!!!

Thor 2 was fantastic. A nice follow up. Thor 3 should raise the stakes. Ragnarok would be perfect. It's another story line that could be Asgard exclusive, i.e. "WHY DON'T THE AVENGERS SHOW UP?"
If it happens, I could see them changing it up so that Ragnarok is more of a straight up end of the world for Asgard, incited and carried out by Surtur. Maybe by now Loki has brought in Enchantress and Executioner to help conceal his identity and enforce his will on the kingdom. Surtur strikes, and Loki reveals himself to Thor, knowing he's not strong enough to protect his kingdom.
