"Confirmed:

Back in 2007, "I Am Legend" screenwriter Mark Protosevich was hired to write a script for a live-action Thor film. (Variety)

Protosevich has worked to recreate the legend as "accurately" as possible. (Newsarama)

In December 2007, Protosevich described his plans for it "to be like a superhero origin story, but not one about a human gaining super powers, but of a god realizing his true potential. It's the story of an Old Testament god who becomes a New Testament god." (Daily Herald)

“It’s very much a Marvel superhero story but against the backdrop of nothing you’ve seen before,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in describing “Thor” as a period fantasy in the vein of “The Lord of the Rings.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

Feige also talked about the upcoming Thor movie, confirming that it will take place mostly in Asgard, the mythical Norse realm of the gods, and not in the contemporary real world. “The film is not all Asgard, but it will be a big chunk in Asgard, yeah.” (SciFi.com)

Marvel Studios will likely finance Thor using its $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch. Marvel has used that fund to finance both The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. (Variety)

Thor will hit screens on May 20, 2011

Chris Hemsworth will play Thor and there will be no Donald Blake. (FirstShowing.net)

Loki will be played by actor Tom Hiddleston. (Marvel)

Natalie Portman will play Jane Foster, Thor's first love. (SuperHeroHype)

Kenneth Branaugh will be directing Thor.

Stan Lee, the man who created Marvel's version of Thor, stated that he will probably have a cameo in the film, but joked that he wanted to be Odin.

Model, Diora Baird, auditioned for a role in the film that called for her to be "pretty, but sturdy with muscle." (Twitter)
Rumored:

Rumored:

Thor is rumored to have a cameo in Iron Man 2.

When Robert Downey Jr. was asked about the Thor cameo in the Iron Man sequel, he could only respond with, " I can neither confirm nor deny that." (Latino Review)

Rumors that the WWE's Triple H would play Thor quickly faded out by the end of 2007.

Previously, Kevin McKidd was rumored to be up for the role of Thor.

Brad Pitt's name was widely circulated as the front-runner to play Thor. (Latino Review)

According to a script review by TheComicForums.com, Protosevich focuses his story on Asgard and Midgard with no modern day touches and no Dr. Don Blake. (TheComicForums.com)

It is an origin story that has all of the characters you'd hope to see: Odin, Balder, Fandral, Volstagg, and Thor. (TheComicForums.com)

Loki is the main villain of the film and the moment where he dons his famous green and yellow duds with the long horns is so vivid and exciting, giving the film the feeling of Lord of the Rings meets Spider-Man. (TheComicForums.com)

When Loki's scheming leads to Thor being banished from Asgard, he must forget his vanity, find Mjolnir, and make his way home. (TheComicForums.com)"

A pretty cool list. I wish we could get the "Marvel will not allow any cheese to be included in the Thor movie" statement from Marvel. Thor is for sure to open on May 20, 2011.

ummmmm yeah but check this out:

If there wasn't going to be any Don Blake, then why would there be a Jane Foster?

I thinkt he fact that there is a Jane Foster automatically indicates that Don Blake would be there to meet her. Otherwise there is no reason for her to be in the movie.

"Chris Hemsworth will play Thor and there will be no Donald Blake." and "Natalie Portman will play Jane Foster, Thor's first love." contradict each other. Why would Jane Foster be in the movie if there isn't a Donald Blake? Did they update some info and it's not properly represented here?

Midas, Thor ROCKS! You know how Superman is JLA's main muscle guy? Thor is like that for the Avengers. More powerfult han the rest of the team by far, but a hell of a team player.

I agree with Darth Mulder. I remember some worry over how to link this film with the real world feel of Iron Man. How else but with Thor's human vessel, Donald Blake?

mmmmk basically news about both Cap and Thor won't really start up till early next year.

This is going to be a long three moths lol

@ Lomgbowhunter: I actually have that worry, but I don't want to make a big deal out of it because we have no idea whats coming at this point. It can be done.
The Norse gods are real. They live in another dimension where the universe is a big tree in a land with trolls and giant snowmen. One of which raped an Asgaardian woman captured during a war, and then the woman had Tho's adopted brother.
To get to their city you have to walk down a rainbow that you can't get to unless your a god or Doc Strange.
yeah that would be hard to adapt but

yeah it can be done. It will be really hard and there will be a lot of ways for it to get all screwed up. But there's no sense in worrying about it now. We'll see in a few months.

I read somewhere, (gonna have to find that article again), that Donald Blake WILL be in the movie, but at the very end, where they will tie it into our own timeframe. So it can tie-in to Avengers. When I find that article again I will post it.

They wouldn't bring Natalie in to play Jane Foster if Donald Blake is only in the movie briefly at the end. She is too big of an actor to just be used in a little part! I think there'll be quite a bit of Midgard in the movie!

Branagh probably had the script reworked to fit more of earth into the latter part of the story! It only makes logical sense, in order to tie it into the marvel world and the upcoming Avengers.

Yes, Asgard can be made to be another dimension where the mythic god's of old live but I would rather it be another Solar system and planet or another galaxy, far, far away!

this from http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/01/02/new-thor-movie-rumors-regarding-donald-blake/

As we all know, Marvel is leading three of its upcoming movies (Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America) into The Avengers movie in July of 2011. While we've already seen the very realistic world in which Iron Man is set, the problem is that the Thor movie would be supposedly set in Thor's native land of Asgard, which is a mythical city from Norse mythology. So if the entire movie takes place during that time and in that location, how would they eventually connect it with the modern real world Avengers? Apparently the script has recently had a re-write that now includes a modern Donald Blake in it somewhere at the end.

So how will all of this work? For those that may be somewhat unfamiliar with the comics, in them, Thor's father Odin decides that his son needs to be taught humility and consequently places Thor into the body of a partially disabled medical student named Donald Blake. After becoming a doctor and thoroughly believing himself to be Blake, he later discovers Thor's disguised hammer and learns to change back and forth into the Thunder God. My best guess is that the Thor movie might take place half in Asgard, half in the real world, with Thor eventually being sent to Earth as Donald Blake where he later finds the hammer again.

Take this all as a rumor at the moment, however, I have a feeling Marvel wants to keep the story very close to the comics in every way, which means this would make a lot of sense.

Simonsonrules
Simonsonrules - 8/31/2009, 4:48 PM
I'm going to trust Branagh not to let Donald Blake transform into Donald Duck during the film.

Been waiting for more news on this for months...

Incidentally, does anyone know if Blessed has been confirmed as Odin? I've heard that is still a rumor, despite IMDB.

My feeling about Hemsworth/Hiddleston is that, despite their relatively unknown status, Branagh wouldn't settle on them if he didn't REALLY think they could carry it. Even so, with Thor, it's kind of a crapshoot and so much will come down to the quality of the CG, which I expect will be very good (NB: Iron Man).

Thor is my absolute favorite Marvel character, so I'm actually more concerned that he look cool when hanging onto a whirling hammer than if he turns into Don Blake for a while, although to be sure I'd rather not have too much Blake in this film. When you start to think about the "physics" of Thor and flight, you realize there is the potential for some extremely ridiculous visuals.

After the Cap shield cameo in Iron Man, I'm sure that there will be some sort of random Thor / Asgardian ref. in Iron Man 2.

The film has to begin with donald blake and jane foster to establish the characters, otherwise the ending will mean nothing and non comic book viewers wont get it! Pretty sure the odd lightning strike will throw the story back and fourth between asgard and midgard.

Nice! Well thanks for clearing that up jman. Its good to know the clear details for this movie and get rid of all of the false rumors. I cant wait for Thor in 2011 and I will look forward to all the future articles leading up to the movie, especially plenty of interviews with Kenneth Branagh, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston! Thats one of the things I love about this site is the interviews with the cast of the movie. I love reading interviews about Iron Man 2 where Jon and Robert have such passion for the character of Iron Man and I hope it will be the same for the cast of Thor and ALL future Marvel movies
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 8/31/2009, 5:59 PM
Simonson rules:

1. With jane Foster in it, seeing Don Blake is very likely. Personally I am cool with it either way.

2. Same here. I have been waiting for more news for months also. waiting for this movie to come out si goign to drag and drag and drag

2. Blessed has indeed been confirmed as Odin. That came from Blessed's camp which is almost as good as Branaugh's

3. I have reservations about some things. I have been wondering quite a lot how they are going to make Hemsworth look as big as Thor. personallY I think they will probably go with a blonde wig and rubber muscles like Juggernaut in X3.

4. I am glad to hear there is another big Thor fan around. Thor is SO underrated, but he's one the very top most important Marvel characters and one of the most powerful heroes as well. I think people are put off by the whole "god" thing, which is lame when you consider that there are still polytheistic religions observed and practiced on the world today. Also everybody loves Shazam, but then they think of Thor as "cheesy".

5. Ah physics.. That's the thing about an enchanted hammer. Part of the enchantment is the way it cancels physics.
But I think part of the confusion lies in understanding how Thor's flight works. He flings the hammer and holds on just to take off. Once he's in flight, he can control the direction, velocity, etc. If I am not mistaken he can even hold onto the hammer and hover with it but then he has to throw it again to fly off. And if he has to throw it at something while flying, he commands the wind to hold him aloft till it comes back. I don't think he has ever fallen out of the sky after having thrown the hammer, but he does sort of drift down a bit. The reason for that is probably because without Mojlnir in his hand it's harder for him to control the wind.

5. I hope your right. I would flip my lid if Thor showed up in Iron Man. I would probably watch the movie five more times at least, just to get another glimpse of my boy lol
DDD
DDD - 8/31/2009, 6:03 PM
That's the right pronunciation SirPrize. I'm half Norwegian and my dad spoke Norwegian. Myawl-nir is correct. Just like Bjorn is pronounced Byorn, meaning, BEAR. The modern names is: Born.

Shibazz, Thor first showed up as Dr. Donald blake before he found the walking stick that transformed him into Thor. And having Thor in some nebulous "Realm" does not fit into the present Marvel movie "realism" universe. It would either have to be in another dimension or another planet. It doesn't make any realistic sense if it isn't. Plus the weapons have to be some kind of alien tech or it will also be laughable!

If it was just some "magic" realm ppl would laugh the movie out of the market. Even the magic of Dr. Strange must be explained scientifically or it will be corn-ball! I like to think of magic as some kind of telepathic/telekinetic power!

thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 8/31/2009, 6:32 PM
I don't think the magic has to be cornball. Read Neil Gaiman's American Gods, if they do thor's magic like that I think it would work perfectly.
Plus if you come and say it's not really magic you strip away the dynamic that exists between tony stark and and thor. Tony should be the skeptic not the audience, have him try to explain it away in Avengers, not have explained for us in the thor movie.

future0fcomixs - 8/31/2009, 6:44 PM
every time i read news about this movie i get more and more excited, i totally think that they picked a solid cast and honestly theres not much that could go wrong with this movie, but i honestly dont think that thor will make an appearence in iron man 2, iron man 2 will most likly just be iron man and his story with nick furey and black widow ;D
TheMyth
TheMyth - 8/31/2009, 6:54 PM
I have to go with thwhtknight there. If it isn't magic, it isn't Thor, it's just a new-age interpretation. I'm not an expert on Thor, but from what I understand, Asgard is a system of 9 worlds and the Rainbow Bridge an extra-dimensional portal of sorts. Mjolnir is made of an unearthly metal known as Uru if I'm not mistaken. If people can buy into an imaginary metal being laced to Wolverine's skeleton, the material and properties that make the hammer shouldn't be difficult to accept. I also like the idea of Stark being the skeptic, thinking Blake is just a nut-job for a while.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 8/31/2009, 6:55 PM
hey DDD and knight

I know, the idea of magic powers seems silly to our ears but I really don't want them to try and explain it scientifically. How magic works should be represented in the movies as it truly is: a great mystery. I don't want them to explain how it works because then it would get stupid. Just have it be there and be mysterious and that will be enough.

They never even have to use the word magic, especailly in Thor. Don't bother telling why he can rip steel like paper, just show him doing it. Don't explain why the weather does what he tells it to, just make it happen.

I am way way more concerned with them getting his powers right in the first place than how they explain it.
