THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Will See Natalie Portman's Jane Foster Gain Different Powers To The Odinson

It seems Marvel Studios and Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder won't play out exactly like how the 2018 storyline in the comics played out according to a new interview with Natalie Portman

It was previously teased by Natalie Portman that Thor: Love and Thunder is "gonna be really silly, and funny, and great," and the actress has now revealed some new details about the film.

Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Portman told Clarkson that she won't be called 'Lady Thor.' "So, she does have powers. It's not exactly the same as Thor, it's her own version of it, and... she's called the Mighty Thor."

As part of Jason Aaron's 2018's Death of the Mighty Thor story arc in Marvel Comics, Jane Foster gains powers nearly identical to Thor's after the Odinson becomes unworthy of wielding mjolnir and Foster becomes the mystical hammer's owner. This admission from Portman appears to indicate that the Taika Waititi film might be heading in a slightly different direction.

Prior to Foster acquiring the powers of Thor in 2018, the character was previously fused with Lady Sif in a 1975 storyline from Gerry Conway after an entity known as Fear tricked Foster into a suicide attempt. Knocking on death's door, Sif chooses to sacrifice herself by giving her life force to save the lover of the man she loves.

Another possibility would be Portman's Jane Foster becoming a Valkyrie, a recent development in the comics that came about after an attack on Manhattan by Malekith. As part of her new Valkyrie powers, Foster gains a golden mace, chain and wings.

Portman is currently in Sydney, Australia to prepare for filming. Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to hit theaters on February 11, 2022.

Anyone else think she’s going to ruin this role? Is she a good actress other than V for Vendetta?

@thereeljoefish - Yes? Black Swan, Annihilation, etc..

Well we kind of already knew that. Mjornir was destroyed (and the one from endgame was brought back to that timeline) so theres really not much wiggle room to say she's literally getting thors powers. Its really more of an approximation from some other means.

@Origame - It’s like when we had Thunderstrike or Beta Ray Bill in the comics. They were close but did have some differences. I’m more curious about the storyline vs how her powers manifest.

@patgreyc - exactly. Especially since the hammer needs to be made now and made special to give her powers.

@Origame - But what happened to the pieces of the Mjölner that Hela destroyed. Were they just left there on that opening? Considering Jane Foster's history with researching everything Asgårdian, maybe she found them, or they were delivered to her. Who knows.

@Odin - considering thor never thought of putting them together, im guessing the pieces are basically just paper weights.

I'm going to assume she's going to be a multi-verse version of the character. I feel like Phase 4 will be based around Scarlett Witch breaking the multi-verse. Jane will be the Thor of her reality.

@JoeInTheBox - So if Gorr is in this movie, he has to murder Gods of Thunders. The hammers are his trophies and Gorr chases after Mighty Thor.

@Repian - I like the way you think. I'm actually going to go one further since I just went down the theory vortex.

Jane as Thor from her reality, was married to Thor. He died by Gorr's hands and she took up the mantle. Back in 616/MCU she's going to help out Thor find his purpose and reclaim his title, not in his power-set sense, but in life and destiny. Remind him of the man she fell in love with.

She had different powers in the Aaron run.

She could talk to and understand Mjolnir while Thor could not.
