THOR: RAGNAROK Isn't Going To Be The PLANET HULK Movie You Were Probably Hoping For

If you expected Thor: Ragnarok to be a faithful adaptation of the Planet Hulk storyline, then you're probably going to be disappointed by this update on just how much it factors into proceedings here.

Talks of Marvel Studios making a Planet Hulk movie have persisted for years. It's become clear recently that we're never going to get a solo adventure starring the Jade Giant and now Thor: Ragnarok producer Brad Winderbaum has shed some light on how this storyline has influenced the threequel.

While most fans didn't expect those Planet Hulk elements to completely take over Thor: Ragnarok, it actually sounds like the movie ties to the story are more incidental than they are intentional!

"In the earliest development of Thor, we were looking at ‘Planet Hulk’ as inspiration, maybe not even to integrate the Hulk into the franchise but the idea of a planet where there’s gladiatorial games as being a Thor predicament. It really was a cool idea to us. Somewhere in the early conversations, when it looked like it was going that way, it was a no brainer. It actually started off as like, ‘…could we have Hulk in there too?’ And then as soon as that spark ignited, it ignited kind of an idea machine. And suddenly [Hulk] was married to the plot."

That's not a bad thing by any means but some fans will undoubtedly be disappointed by the fact that Planet Hulk is going to boil down to a few scenes set in The Grandmaster's arena with much of what made the story great left out. That was to be expected when this is primarily a Thor adventure, though, so it's just the way things are here. Plus, the battle between these two promises to be...incredible!

Well that's nice I was kind of hoping for a Thor movie anyway.

@soberchimera - true, so far cap 3 and iron man 3 were great but disappointing in its own way. Loved the twists in both films because it was unguessable but iron man 3 wasted Mandarin and Cap 3 wasnt even his solo. Hopefully Thor 3 wont disappoint.

@mastakilla39 - That's a fair criticism of Civil War. That one i completely get how others can feel that way. Personally I love it and I think it plays very much in line with Caps journey. In the end i'd much rather have had Civil War than a Cap solo. And its amazing knowing he fought Spidey, Bucky, Tony, T'Challa, Rhodey, and Crossbones in the same movie.

This video is still my favorite thing

@Deonox - Yes i agree, not knocking down civil war at all. its an amazing accomplishment in film history on how to do a "versus" film with such a huge cast as many film makers (like snyder's bvs) failed to do. Just knowing the mythology of Cap and his supporting characters from the comics like falcon, jack monroe, sharon carter, etc. it felt like his stories, adventures, and supporting characters were never fully explored compared to iron man and thor.

@Deonox - Also from an actors perspective, Civil War did not seem like a proper farewell to Chris Evan's Cap trilogy as it was shared between every avenger. Especially if he is hanging up the mantle of Cap. Hugh Jackman, RDJ, and Christian Bale had great farewells for their trilogy but Evan's civil war left me wanting more as I believe he was not fully explored.

This was kind of obvious already. Yeah Hulk will be in it, but it would ultimately be a Thor movie.

@JoeMomma29 - NOPE never have just great ties to Planet Hulk giving a fans their first real look at how Hulk is supposed to be.

HULK HAS NO LIMITS AND ONLY GETS STRONGER AND NEVER GETS TIRED AND CAN'T BE KILLED

Hulk will defeat EVERYONE with ease. He can destroy planets with nothing more than his footsteps. He can destroy asteroids twice the size of Earth with a single punch. Hulk can punch through time storms, and has defeated all the heroes and villains( even Sentry, who has the power of "one million exploding suns"). Hulk can lift and destroy structures built to withstand the power of gods. He can hold planets 100 times larger than Earth and that weighs 100 times as much, so he is capable of lifting at least 660 sextillion tons. Hulk has been encased in pure diamond and completely shattered it simply by flexing. He has even survived being blasted by Galactus himself and can drop from a planet's orbit and been completely unhurt. He has even survived being on the sun. Hulk should be first and will always be the best and most powerful character in the history of superheroes.

Hulk has even lifted a star that was 15 times larger than our sun

@JoeMomma29 - thank you! Been saying planet hulk is just a detour in the movie, not main plot for weeks yet people still reply to me I'm wrong. There is no way it can becalmed Ragnarok and be all about planet hulk. Delusional is right

@DoubleD - You are preaching to choir of Comic Book Fans........but you know Marvel has sort of grounded him......not saying that is a bad thing.....but the same thing can be said about Thor.

@JoeMomma29 - Your 100% right, Marvel and directors have grounded the Hulk but this is a huge step in the right direction. No more Ape Hulk dragging knuckles and can't speak Hulk is gone for good.

@JoeMomma29 - Hulk has been my favorite since a kid. While I have enjoyed all the Hulk movies including Avengers I was disappointed on how they portrayed the Hulk.

I'm preaching that Hulk shows up with his army at the end of Avengers 3 just as Thanos is about to destroy the Avengers and defeats him... The celebration is short lived however as everyone realizes Hulk is there to conquer and the movie ends... Avengers 4 becomes World War Hulk. I don't think it'll happen but it'd be pretty awesome!
DoubleD
DoubleD - 9/7/2017, 9:34 AM
@MrJosh - World War Hulk would be Awesome. Hulk's mercy is their only hope :)

Hulk isn't just a planet destroyer but a Universe destroyer with a single Thunder Clap :) ha ha lol

@MrJosh - the strongest Avenger becomes an even bigger threat than Thanos and the Black Order? That's...inspired. And a really exciting plot twist. If I had to choose between Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, definitely the latter.
LeonNova
LeonNova - 9/8/2017, 3:16 AM
@MrJosh - Feige said Hulk has a major story arc throughout Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Avengers 4 that equals a solo film when all put together. So I'm guessing he'll be in IW more than just the final scene.

Cautiously hype for this movie

That's a relief. When I finally got around to reading Planet Hulk I found myself pretty disinterested. The most compelling concept of Planet/World War Hulk is the general fear of the Hulk that leads to his exile, which in turn basically realizes that fear. That story, however, does not fit together with either the somewhat tame version of the MCU Hulk or the self-imposed exile they've gone with.

No biggie. That's how writing goes. You always get lots of those Inception moments, where the moment you get an idea (even one you're kind of opposed to at the time) it just won't ever go away.
