Michael Bay Ticked Off at Paramount for Transformers: ROTF Marketing (or Lack Thereof)

Celebrity gossip magazine TMZ has released a leaked email from Bay accusing the studio of failing to promote the TRANSFORMERS sequel.

By bsprecher - Jun 22, 2009 07:06 AM EST

A scathing email from director Michael Bay to executives at Paramount Studios has leaked complaining about the lack of marketing for this week's release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen:

"You all talk so glowingly about Transformers being the movie of the summer but unfortunately this has not gotten to the public. I still run into so many people even this weekend with kids that ask 'is that movie coming out this year?'."

In the first memo, dated May 4, Bay goes on to speculate that the problem might be financial:

"I cannot figure if this is a cash issue with your company? Is there some clever idea why are we not spending? I'm not sure. I'm sure the movie will do fine, but not to your internal expectations because right now we are fooling ourselves by being cocky."

In a second leaked email, dated June 6, Bay sounds conciliatory, but it's hard to tell the intended tone:

I've been working a month and a half seven days a week and wonder why I bust my ass for Paramount??

Why? Because you have treated me so well. Paramount is like family. Thank you all for busting your butts and bringing your 'A game' for the release of Transformers."

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen debuts nationwide theaters June 24

Wow! One could even take that second leak (dated June 6) as extreme sarcasm. You rarely can tell the intended tone unless you either a) know the person or situation/context, or b) both.

@Ironclad: I totally agree! I read it as being extremely snarky!

I read it like sarcasm. It is Bay, really now. I myself have noticed the lack of Heavy Advertising as well. All they need is a 5 sec. commercial. Have optimus punching someone in the head, then cue poster done.

I took the June 06 e-mail to be half sincere and half sarcastic. Mainly the second part, I think the first sentence is sincere (that Bay thinks Paramount is like family) but then the second sentence he's being sarky.

But then again, I'm highly dubious that these e-mails are from Bay. Only because all the rumours about him quitting etc. have been so exaggerated that I'm taking any news about him with a pinch of salt!

Roll out!!

RADIATE!

um yeah i dont think the movie really needed any marketing, but i have to admit there is nearly nothing compared to the overabundance of commercials we saw with the last movie

I was thinking the same thing...
I have seen commercials (not many), but it was not marketed like the last one.

Some times that work...but if they want to squeeze every last dollar out I think they need to put more in.

lmao @ Teabag..that is so wrong.
I'm gonna go with sarcasm with that second email. Come on..its Michael Bay. Nothing bout that dude screams Humble.
I have to agree with him..its not being marketed at all!
@ Grif...because we are all so tuned in to what is going on online, we can get updates and view trailers. The only times i have seen a transformers trailer has been online & at the movie theater as a preview. They need to stop depending on the popularity of the first movie. That's not gonna guarantee success for the second.

definitely not enough tv marketing. the only adverts iv seen have also either been in the cinema or online but i thought the movie was great everyone in the cinema thought it was great to and theres no advertisement like word of mouth. i think it will definitely be the biggest movie of the year

What does he mean they ain't promoting it right, every single day you see a tv spot back to back for this movie. So whoever asked him when does the movie come out, he should of responded with where the [frick] have you been.

WTF???

I was just watching TV, and I saw 5 ROTF commercials within a 45 min span.

...toys, Burger King, tv spots, etc...one commercial for the toys played one right after the other.

LOL not enough promotion? You got to be kidding me Bay. What? Do you want Paramount to BLOW up Rhode Island or something???
