The Boys season 4 enlisted Tilda Swinton to voice The Deep's octopus lover Ambrosias (more here), but the second episode, "Life Among the Septics," also featured an on-screen cameo from another A-list star.
The episode begins with A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) filming a scene for one of Vought's highly fictionalized superhero origin movies, which is a clear parody of The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock. This time, the coach who won't give up on the young speedster and refuses to let him throw a promising future away by becoming a drug dealer is played by none other than Will Ferrell.
While chatting to Collider, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that he's wanted to work with the SNL alum for quite a while, and felt he'd be perfect for the "massive A-list star" they still hadn't cast in the role of Coach Brink.
"We had a meeting, and we texted a little bit, around when the part was available, and we were looking for somebody. Jess Chou wrote in the script, 'Massive A-list Star,' as the name of the character, so I just reached out and said, 'Do you wanna do it?' And I’m thrilled that he said, 'Yes.' It was a horrible, punishing shoot. It was freezing rain, blowing sideways all day, and I felt so bad because he was just out there, outside. But he could not have been kinder and more lovely throughout it all. It was a terrible, horrible day, and he had just such a great attitude through the whole thing.”
Ferrell only makes a brief appearance, but he does show up again later in the season when a clip from the movie is screened during a Vought presentation.
What did you make of Ferrell's cameo and the first three season 4 episodes overall? Let us know in the comments down below.
"The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power," reads the official season 4 synopsis. "Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."
Returning cast members include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti, along with new recruits Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 will be available to stream from June 13th, with new instalments dropping weekly through to the season finale on July 18.
