With Alexandria in flames and Carl at death's door, things definitely didn't look so good for Rick and his people by the end of the midseasom finale of The Walking Dead - but when the show returns from its hiatus next month, the survivors will still rally to make their "Last Stand."

AMC has debuted our first official key art for the show's return, and it features Rick, Daryl and Michonne looking for than ready for what's to come. There's also a (very) lengthy synopsis, which gives fans a very good idea of what we can expect from this final batch of season 8 episodes.

Tell us, are you looking forward ro the return of The Walking Dead? Let us know in the comments.

All out war has had a devastating impact on every person involved. The communities themselves are fractured. Alexandria has been destroyed, the Hilltop finds themselves pinned, and the Kingdom is shattered — half of them dead, the other half controlled by the Saviors. At the very center — Rick, having been distracted by the conflict, has just returned home to learn that Carl, who heroically shepherded the Alexandrians to safety during Negan’s attack, has been bitten by a walker. Once his sole motivation in this otherwise stark existence, Rick is forced to deal with this reality. Carl has always been a beacon of hope, a symbol for the remaining thread of humanity — lessons that the survivors around him would be wise to take with them as this war surges onward.

But Rick isn’t the only person who’s living in peril. Aaron and Enid are in a dire situation at Oceanside — unclear if they’re in friendly territory, or if they’ve just made new enemies. Father Gabriel will do his part in attempting to smuggle Dr. Carson safely back to the Hilltop and a pregnant Maggie is wrestling with the many moral gray areas that come with leadership during war. In a standoff with the Saviors, she must decide how to proceed with the dozens of POW lives she’s currently in control of, as well as new complications that come with being a leader. In addition to the war, Negan continues to deal with struggles within his ranks as workers, traitors, and others’ thirst for power cause conflict at the Sanctuary. Having gifted the Saviors a major victory, Eugene’s loyalty is repeatedly tested as new obstacles present themselves.

As all-out-war consumes us, the line between good and evil continues to blur. People fighting for what they believe in. Everybody working together for something bigger — to feel safe and have a world worth living in.

@SpaceBeyonder - They could've had Abraham in the Fear The Walking Dead spinoff. Made so much sense - its set right at the start of TWD universe, Abraham lived in Houstin, Texas, where the FTWD cast are heading to next and he was one of the most popular and iconic characters on the show.

But nope; we're getting a time jump and Morgan going over there instead, because...[frick] logic.

@TheGoddamnPeel -

God I so don’t want FTWD to be ruined. It’s so good and SO much better than Walking Dead in a lot of fundamental ways...

@TheGoddamnPeel - Do you know why they killed off Carl? I thought that maybe there were problems on the set, that the kid could be an asshole or something like that, apparently there have been many personalities and divas clashing on set, but I saw an interview of him and read some more, and he seems like a super nice kid who had no idea they were gonna write him off. He sounds like he really didn't want to go anywhere. Breaks my heart for him. Carl is great in the comic too. Even better.

@Asturgis - The 'official' reason why he's being killed off is so that Rick will be inspired to spare Negan, for some stupid reason. The 'unofficial' reason is that Chandler Riggs just turned 18 and that means as an adult, he'd have to be paid more as an actor, which AMC likely didn't want to do considering how much they've had to cut the show's budgets and they're currently suffering from lawsuits from Frank Delano (The show's original Executive Producer), the family of a stuntman who died on set in an accident and several other people. They're cash-strapped and wanted to cut some people off the show who weren't named Rick, Daryl or Michonne so went with Carl.

@kylo0607

Morgan was officially confirmed by the show's executive producers to be crossing over to FTWD. From the pics we've seen of him with his stick, there's going to be a time jump on FTWD and the crew will eventually encounter Morgan somehow.

Yup I know...It sounds incredibly stupid and could ruin FTWD.

Morgan should have been the one that gave Rick reason to spare Negan, the last episode of the season should have been Morgan dying in bed with Rick by his side, paralleling the pilot, where each one says their goodbyes, some nods back to their first time they met, where Morgan says to Rick a very good monologue, where he tells him "You're a good man Rick", and that's it, Morgan dies peacefully, Rick spares Negan, everyone, happy.

It would also have been symbolic, Morgan welcomed Rick to the new world, the apocalypse, and now he is saying his goodbye to Rick, and starting a New Beginning for him.

@SpaceBeyonder - They can't do that. It makes too much sense.
Peel

@SpaceBeyonder - Add to all that that Morgan was the one who built the Jail Cell that Negan will be languishing in, that's what made the most sense before the end of Season Seven.

But honestly, where things stand I wouldn't have wanted them to kill Morgan since he's the one who's been hunting down Saviours non-stop and not wanting to show mercy to any of them, I'd much rather it'd have been Gabriel to sacrifice himself to show the good in Negan since he was the one who Negan confessed to in the first place.

I love the comic, but it gets really repetitive after the Governor and Woodbury.

Hopefully, the new showrunner will bring the show back to its roots and thrive once more. I've been a fan since day one but I'm glad that Scott Gimple isn't in charge of the show. He some new title called the director of content or something. As long as he's out of the way.

Yeah, they need to end this... It keeps going in circles. They should at least make the zombies enhanced somehow. it could bring a new direction to hte story.

Hopefully the second half of the season will hit the ground running. It's a show I love but am starting to lose interest in as the last few seasons haven't been that great.

This season is pretty terrible so far. Every episode with a character giving some over dramatic motivational speech.
