I have yet to watch it but I doubt she is as good an actress as Lena Headey on GoT

Yes people do and enjoy the hell out of it. I stopped watching the Emmy Awards recently due to the joke they have become in not even nominating Tatiana let alone giving her the award she truly deserves.

Guys on here who haven't seen the show yet don't know what they're missing. This is by far one of the best shows on TV right now. And as for Tatiana, she IS, most likely, THE best actress on TV, even better than Lena Headey on Game of Thrones. Think about it...what other actor or actress on TV, or in movies, right now is playing 5-10 different characters, and each one with amazing conviction and believability? The only other actress I can think of if Toni Collete on The United States of Tara, which I've never seen, bu have seen clips and trailers, and she looks like she's doing an amazing job on that show, but not as complex characters as on Orphan. Anyone bashing Orphan must be a CW11 fan with their crappy acting and hot babes running around trying to act like in a porn flick, not to say Arrow and Flash aren't good shows, but please, the female actors trying to hold a candle to Tatiana??? That's like trying to compare Stephen Amell to Tom Hanks. Arrow and Flash's problem aren't the writing, it's the acting. I do think the acting on Flash is way, way better than Arrow, but neither one will ever touch Orphan.
Luther
Luther - 3/22/2015, 10:05 AM
I personally don't think she deserves the award, and she's a decent actress, but definitely not over some others on tv now and those nominated in her same category. In my opinion, this show's overrated..as hell.

"Anyone bashing Orphan must be a CW11 fan"..I forgot, that's how we deal with disagreements on CBM. Whoever doesn't agree with me must be of a lower intelligence than I. smh. Well for the record, I think Flash, Arrow, (both CW) and Agents of Shield (to remain in comic book related television medium) aren't that good either, in fact, Orphan Black trumps them all on all counts. But that doesn't say much, either.

Better actresses: about 2 on Broadchurch, but especially Olivia Colman; Ruth Wilson on The Affair (rightfully won), Robin Right from House of Cards, hell even Claire Danes always-crying ass on Homeland. That's the only ones I'm interested in/follow. Others may trow Viola Davis, The women of Downton Abbey, Kerry Washington, Juliana Margulies, etc. I'm not familiar with their work, so I can't vouch for them.

How many other actors play multiple characters and as well as Tatiana Maslany?? Not many. That's why you gotta give credit where credit is due.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 3/22/2015, 12:33 PM
Here's how great an actor she is. She plays 5 different characters, who routinely dress up as and impersonate each other, and it works. So much of what she's doing is "this is what character A thinks character B would do and say" even though she also plays character B and knows better. Half the time the show plays out like a theory of mind experiment.

Granted, most actors don't get half as much of an opportunity and challenge to act on TV, so a lot of the "Tatiana Maslany is the greatest" sentiment comes from that. It's not just that her acting is a 10/10, it's the difficulty of the attempt.

Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 3/22/2015, 12:46 PM
And to people who are saying the show is overrated, I think it's probably a negative reaction to the perception that the clone aspect is just a gimmick, like a Nutty Professor movie or a sitcom where an actor plays twins.

But while the show does occasionally get a little gimmicky, the overall storyline is actually an extremely well structured exploration of identity, near-reality-science and legal repercussions, and the bonds of sisterhood and family. Just in terms of writing, it really is an astoundingly sharp show, and the fact that so much of that burden is on Maslany's shoulders is what garners her the praise she gets (though she's still criminally underrated by people who don't watch the show).

@Luthor
I like Broadchurch a lot, but we're talking about different leagues here. Maslany has created (more than) 5 characters that actually feel like different people. Even after two seasons, Olivia Coleman never shook me from seeing Soph from Peep Show.
imkennypowers
imkennypowers - 3/22/2015, 1:06 PM
Also, if we're being fair, Lena Headey is on HBO. (It's not TV, it's HBO.) Similarly, Robin Wright is on Netflix, which is also not TV.

Love it how people who haven't seen the show say its not good....how would you know? She is an incredibly talented actress. By far one of the best. I've watched episodes and not known she was playing someone and a friend would point it out afterwards. Yeah, she's that good.

Ridiculous plot, people screaming about her playing multiple characters, eddie Murphy did this year's ago and changed sex as well as age, this chick plays five chicks all the same age with different personalities, that is just acting. It's not impressive. Just because she plays five reasonably similar chicks in the same show thats better than a person playing a different character in 5 different shows? Come off of it its ridiculous. And i don't know if this show does this but anytime they make a girl a ridiculous badass it turns me off of the show. It's just too ridiculous.

@Spock0Clock and @ImKennyPowers The fact she plays multiple characters, doesn't grant a pass. Let alone an award. In my opinion, she only plays 1 of those personalites well. The others remind me of overacted Terrence Howard performances. Also going by that logic, unless any other show features multiple characters played by a single performer, she'd win every year, by default, until the show is ultimately cancelled. And I for one can't go for that.

and yannow what, I think I agree with @huckfinnisher.

Oh..and I have, and occasionally still do, watch the show. Of course, just my opinion, guys.

@Luther....thank you @ImKennyPowers. That's what I meant. She's the best on TV playing multiple characters. I wasn't comparing her to other actresses like Claire Danes or Robin Wright (which those two shows are in my top favorites) and any other actress. I'm sure any one of those actresses can do the same, but they haven't yet, up to this point. They're all great actresses. My point was Tatiana, right now, is doing something no other actress is doing, except Toni Collete on United States of Tara, which is even not on TV anymore. And for others bashing the show, I don't know what you've been watching. And if you're bashing it, then why are you still watching it if you don't like it?

@Spock0Clock, ah condescending memes, the idiot's whit, I can see you liking this show. If you look at my comment I only said the plot was ridiculous (I have read more than one plot synopsis, I have friends who watch). That everybody is going crazy over a hot chick playing 5 hot chicks dressed differently when other actors have played the diff characters in the same movie and have done so with far more variability. Finally I said that I find it ridiculous when a small woman (Tatiana is 5'4) is portrayed to be a badass. What is it exactly you had a problem with?

"Ridiculous plot" like ? I mean it's a freaking sci fi show, it's not more ridiculous then superheroes or sci fi movies/shows.

"Just because she plays five reasonably similar chicks in the same show that's better than a person playing a different character in 5 different shows?"

She plays 5 fully realized and complex women, she does it with such nuance and power. They all poses their own personality, mannerism, sound different etc. She gives 5 amazing and powerful performances which include both drama and comedy, she embodies her characters and gives them so much depth ... so yes she is the best actress on TV that includes Netfilex and Hbo.

She's won 2 critic's choice award(for best drama) has hand one golden globe nomination for best actress, and has been nominated by her own peers by receiving A screen actor's screen award for best actress. I'll go with the critics that watch every show and every performance, am sure they know what the hell they're talking about you know because they've actually watched it.

" And i don't know if this show does this but anytime they make a girl a ridiculous badass it turns me off of the show. It's just too ridiculous."

Sarah and Helena are the two badass, I don't think they're "ridiculous". Why is it that so many men bitch about women that are portrayed as badass yet they encourage badass male characters ? I mean Batman, deadpool, wolverine, Green Arrow, Hawkeye etc are all "ridiculous badass" yet no one complains.

@GreenArrow1941, shows and comics can have far out plots without it being ridiculous. The whole plot makes no sense. Why would they spend all this money on these clones and not keep them nearby, what does eugenics have to do with cloning(nothing)? The idea that someone just made all these clones and some of them are badass is ridiculous.

"I mean Batman, deadpool, wolverine, Green Arrow, Hawkeye etc are all "ridiculous badass" yet no one complains."

Uhh all of those people are convincingly athletic looking, built or have superpowers. What your saying makes no sense. In effect your saying why can only extremely physically fit large men play badasses, uhh because any man would beat up Tatiana Maislany, she weighs 120-130 maximum, are you not familiar with weight classes in fighting sports such as UFC, real wrestling, or boxing? The reason these weight classes exist is because people would get slaughtered. This is why it is ridiculous when a small woman plays someone physically imposing. Its simple logic.

"I'll go with the critics that watch every show and every performance, am sure they know what the hell they're talking about you know because they've actually watched it."

At least I think for myself and don't mindlessly cling to critics reviews which are often influenced by more than just performance. You still didn't address what I said, all actors do what she does but in separate projects, it is no more impressive to me for her to do it all at once than spread out. Also it is unfair to judge others against the show because she plays five roles, thus multiplying the chances she had of winning any acting award by five, in short, it means nothing.

The emmy's are a joke, they're still trying to fix how they nominate (to be fair they have tried to fix it and are getting there). Orphan black has several disadvantages, 1. it's a sci-fi show 2. It's not really big here in the USA, about 1+ mil viewers(it's a pretty popular on in other countries) 3. it's canadian 4. Emmy voters aren't watching the show, which is why you have holloywood insiders, actors, directors, critics outraged that she hasn't been nominated 5. Emmy's tend to nominate the same shit every year(I mean they have yet to nominate "The Americans". I think the SAG nomination was a big thumbs up for Maslany and to me it means more then an Emmy(same with critics choice award).

This is the problem with talking out of your ass, you have no idea whats going on but you sure gave your opinion. Your whole comment is stupid and it shows that you really haven't watched the show. So ...
1. Each clone was assigned a monitor which keeps track of them and gives Dyad access to examine them. There monitors would write about the clones progress their habits, mood etc. Dyad didn't want them aware because they were testing the whole nurture vs nature, the mind etc. Again you might not want to talk out of your ass since Dyad has maintained a close watch on all the clones except for Sarah and Helena which escaped thanks to their surrogate mother running and giving the the girls when she realized what was going on. Hell the only self aware clone is Rachel and even she has a monitor.
"Uhh all of those people are convincingly athletic looking, built or have superpowers. What your saying makes no sense. Again talking out of your ass. What I was saying by using those examples is that this men have performed acts that define physics and that make suspend your sense of disbelief regardless of how much training or how strong they are. James Bond does things that no one well trained man could do say with Batman and Green Arrow, it's all exaggerated it's why it's fantasy(Batman braking his own bat motorcycle with a kick ? lol ... oh and Hawkeye and Green Arrow shooting Arrows without looking and hitting there target's perfectly ? lol). The same lagitude should be allowed to women, especially with Sarah(one of the badass chicks) and Helena(the other badass.
Sarah is a street girl, a hustler who grew up in that sort of enviroment ... which included fighting and getting out of tough shit. And No she can't beat up everyone it's how she get's captured a few times but she is a badass. Helena is a badass assassin, she was trained by a religious cult and her mission was to hunt all the clones and kill them ... she was trained so the fact that she can kick ass and take down a few men isn't surprising, she's like a ninja. Having said that they never do things that aren't believable like beating up a hundred men(which is what Batman can do, how he beat up 100 highly trained men I can't explain). Helena uses her agility and stealth to take down bigger targets and she's handy with a sniper. They've both been captured when overcome and they have both been badass without leaving you thinking "how did she do that?".

"At least I think for myself and don't mindlessly cling to critics reviews which are often influenced by more than just performance. You still didn't address what I said, all actors do what she does but in separate projects, it is no more impressive to me for her to do it all at once than spread out. Well no, how I got into this show is actually a pretty simple story that involves no critics ... I saw the trailer while watching cops and was intrigued so I looked it up on demand and there it was and then I was hooked. Good for you buddy, you think for yourself and so do the critics that really have no reason to support this show and Maslany, lol .... trust me no ones throwing money at them for this small little show especially to 99% of the critics because that would be a lot of money/favors to have to pay off.Your point is pretty stupid by the way, you're essential saying that she shouldn't win an award because she play 5 different characters and it would be unfair to other actors ? Am pretty sure that's your point which sounds like a pretty disrespectful thing to say to actors and kind of a compliment to Maslany that she's soo good she'd win every award which she does in the critics awards. She's an actress and so are her peers like Claire Daines and Viola Davis, what your suggesting is unfair and insulting to actors by saying that their performance can't go up against Maslany just because she gives 5. If their performance is a damn good one then they can beat 5 Maslany performances, if it's not then one of MAslany's performances will beat them out. Furthermore, her chances aren't greater since her performances are viewed as a whole.

huckfinnisher
huckfinnisher - 3/23/2015, 11:48 AM
@GreenArrow1914, you sir are the only one talking out of their ass, I am aware of their monitors, this is a stupid plot regardless. Are you trying to tell me they just didn't ever think any would bump into each other or see each other on the news (as is what happened in the show)? That is moronic, they could have built a facility, kept the clones seperate and studied them there, that makes sense, not "Oh don't worry about it, Jim will e-mail us every couple days and let us know whats going on, so screw a secure facility where we could raise them without fear of them bumping into each other and potentially ruining our experiment and seeking revenge on us. None of that will happen because we got a guy watching her."

See how moronic that is? It makes no sense, it is a stupid plot.

Helena is a badass assassin, she was trained by a religious cult and her mission was to hunt all the clones and kill them.."

This is my point exactly, the company that made them obviously didn't see this coming, obviously they arent monitoring her closely enough and this is the reason the plot is stupid. If they had just built a facility for the clones kept them seperate and raised them with pseudo families to study them it would make sense. The idea that one of these clones would end up in a cult, not only a cult, but one that knew of the orphans and wanted to train her to kill the clones of herself is absolutely ridiculous. And Hawkeye and Green Arrow are superhero comic book characters, is Orphan Black a superhero show? Or is it a show about normal people? Assassin training? Come off it, no matter how trained you are people bigger than you kick your ass. I again direct your attention to boxing or UFC, even if one person is a veteran and extremely well trained and the other larger opponent had no training they still don't let a heavyweight fight a featherweight. these people train all their lives but still cant fight people fifty pounds heavier, let alone a hundred. Hawkeye and Green arrow have archery skill. If it was just that she was a good sharpshooter it would be one thing, but if they just try to portray her as a person who can win fights with people far larger than her- logic insists no, to the point of the it being ridiculous.

"her chances arent greater because her performance is viewed as a whole."

Again with the ass talk, if she performs 5 roles, critics see all the roles she has a five times better chance, she plays 5 different roles, its not like when they give her an award they say this is for a specific performance for one clone. Its the opposite of what your saying, she has to play five characters to win the award that other actors do with one. The fact she has been nominated and not given the award is a huge insult to her acting. Another actress showed more range etc. in one roll than she could in five.

@ClumsyToaster, how much of the show should I watch before I'm able to form an opinion about the overall plot? I have had it described to me by friends and have read more than one synopsis, I feel that is qualified to at least speak about the basic plot of the show because I never said the show sucks, just that the plot is ridiculous.

Comments like this are my favorite. Because I feel the need to validate the fact I watch this show or have seen this movie, I'll say so, but not before I get my long, ignorant rant out of the way. It's EASY to tell who's actually watched the show and who's just saying they watch the show to give their ignorant opinion what little credibility it deserves.

Only a troll would clamor on about this show getting canceled.

This show is not remotely close to being canceled. Which really only further proves you do not watch the show.
