Alyson Hannigan Blasts Plans For The Buffy Reboot

The lovely redhead who played Willow in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV show has revealed her disgust at the plans to reboot the concept as a movie without the show's creator Joss Whedon or the original cast.

And who could blame her. There’s been talk for months now to reboot Joss Whedon’s Buffy The vampire Slayer series. And plans are now under way to re(make, boot, launch, imagine, tool) the show's concept for a new movie franchise without so much as a nod towards the creator Joss Whedon.

When Cinemablend asked Allyson Hannigan about this she said..

"Yeah, and that's a very big mistake in my opinion. I mean if Joss isn't involved, it's only the title."

Asked if there was any chance she would be associated with the movie she said..

"Not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back. I mean, it's just ridiculous to think of that TV show without Joss. That's just silly to me… And all the fans know that, too, so I don't know what they're thinking."

Well, I'll tell you exactly what they are thinking. They are thinking dollar signs. With Twilight(basically a watered down Buffy ripoff anyway) more popular than ever they see it as a chance to cash in on the teeny/horror market. And there's nothing wrong with that. It happens all of the time. But why in the name of Angel not go back to the man that made the damn concept so popular in the first place? I've only been a casual fan, but there is no denying the excellence of the writing and the later seasons are very good.

Anyway, I just wonder if these fools know what they are letting themselves in for. Buffy has a massive and loyal fan base. I sense pickets!

Here's a nice pic of Allyson to calm all of our tempers.

Never watched the show. I saw the original movie and didn't want to see what a "tv show" had to offer. My mistake?

Mmmm, maybe..the show is worlds apart from the movie. But the first couple of seasons are very kiddy/cheesy. Later on it gets pretty serious, and then pretty damn great. Last 2 seasons made me a believer..then I switched to Angel, even better.

PHINEHAS: You don't know what you're missing. Comparing the TV show to the movie is like comparing the sun to a fireplace.

Joss is a massive fanboy icon for a reason: Buffy, Angel, and Firefly are three of the greatest series ever made!

@slimybug: I second that. Buffy's a great show. Without Whedon, it's just another Twilight-esque crapfest. Oh, and don't forget Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog.

The show was cool but I love the original movie sure it was campy but it was perfect for the times just like Bill and Ted and My Boyfriends Back. That last movie I mentioned is hella good. Ya'll should check it out. The style of it was almost comic book ish..

And wasn't the show a reboot of the movie? I say Luke Perry should be mad that Robert Spattinhisface from Twilight stole his hair and sideburns.

The show was a spin of from the movie and did reboot the story, but Whedon scripted the movie too. He created the character.

I never really watched Buffy but I've been planning on buying the whole series boxset for AGES! It seems pretty insulting to bring it back with Whedon but you can understand why they're doing it...$£$£$£$£$£$£$£ :D

Ghola: Does this help?

Great find man! Love Buffy and Alyson Hannigan was just the cutest, nerdiest little witch I've ever seen. And I'll be damned if she weren't a lesbian too. Could it get better? I think not.

Oh, and as for the article: anything Joss Whedon without Joss Whedon is beyond pointless. It's a shame. A damned shame.

This is a massivly, colossal, terriably, horrorific idea. Buffy is not Buffy without Whedon, SMG, Allyson, or any of the orginal cast. I can see many protests online if they re- whatever, then again I can also see many of those same people protesting the idea of a BTVS without anyone from the show being done going to see the movie anyway then coming online to complain about how awful the movie was.

My wife made me watch Buffy, and she's making me watch Angel right now. They aren't the best tv shows, but they are better than a lot of crap that is, and has been on tv. I have to admit though, Firefly is Whedon's best work. I think it's terrible what is happening with Buffy and they shouldn't reboot after a great run as a tv show. The same shit has been speculated/confirmed about Battlestar Galactica. I have only watched a couple shows, but rebooting that awesomeness is completly wrong. If the tv show is good, leave it. If it sucks, then maybe make a movie.

Buffy? Have they ran out of ideas or something? OH yeah they have thats why we have reboots left and right? Crappy ones at that, or the ones they have no need for.

[frick] BUFFY! lol The end of the show was the end of Buffy. So, Slyson why dont you go do porn, since your so gawd damn bored withn your life..instead of a pointless reviving of a show or movie. :/

Anything would be better than the original movie. The only thing I ever take away from that movie is the song at the beginning that always gets stuck in my head. Never really watched the series. Watched Angel for awhile. Wasn't bad. Certainly better than some of the recent seasons of Smallville. What happened to the WB?

Even though the show was way more successful than the movie it was still a reboot. To me this makes the pro-Whedon arguments retarded. If he wanted sole ownership of the idea he should have called the show something else and kept the rights for himself.

If the movie looks good I'll see it, if it looks like the original or even just another fad vampire movie I will pass.

For the record I was a fan of Buffy, but lost interest in Angel fairly quick.

Thank God, that at least someone from the cast said something. I saw the original Buffy movie and thought it was tolerable at best. When I heard there was a series I ignored it for 3 seasons thinking why they would make a series about a campy Horror/Comedy. A friend suggested I at least give it a chance. I'm glad he did, I've been a fan ever since. I'm not a fan of Geller, but I've got a weakness for redheads and the rest of the cast was awesome! The fact that they can reboot it without Whedon is odd...doesn't he own the rights?
