COMICS: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Won't Need An Abortion; She's A [SPOILER]

Joss Whedon's controversial decision to have Buffy become pregnant and seek an abortion in the pages of the season #9 comic. Well, they seem to have come up with a way of sidestepping the issue entirely...

A while back we posted an Article detailing the decision to make the very popular character pregnant, and as a result consider - and seemingly decide on - an abortion. This happened in Dark Horse Comics' Season 9 issue #6 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer..

Series creator Joss Whedon went on to defend the controversial storyline by assuring fans: "It's not something we would ever take lightly, because you can't. You don't. It's not an easy thing for anyone". Well, for whatever reason it seems they have decided not to take it anywhere at all, lightly or otherwise. Because in issues #8 and #9 of the comic the following revelation about Buffy comes to light..

SPOILER WARNING

Yes, Buffy is actually a "Buffybot". Fans of the show will remember those. I'm pretty sure even in the messed up Buffyverse a robot can't be impregnated, much less have an abortion performed. So it seems as if this angle has been dropped completely. But why? No doubt comics tackling these type of hot-button issues is always polarizing, but Whedon sounded certain he wasn't going to back down from it. Anyway, guess we will find out what the heck is going on soon enough. Are you glad this whole abortion thing seems to have been abandoned? Or do you think these type of issues should be dealt with in comics?

wow, if this is only to avoid further exploring the "controversal" idea of Buffy having an abortion Joss whedon just dropped a serious way down my facorites-author/director list, what a weak weak WEAK move..

Check out my blog http://capmocomics.blogspot.com/!!! Superhero comics are the topic, and though mostly Marvel, any kind of comics can feature. Take a look, comment, criticize, applaud, whatever comes to mind when reading it!!!

Ironangel, fine then don't read THAT comic! They are almost as diverse as books or movies these days, you may as well try to keep all that "social and political stuff" out of them too.

wow. That's a huge cop out. It's like they went: "Let's talk about a serious topic..... nah just kidding, there was no life changing decision to make at all." Granted, I haven't read any of the comics but that's what it looks like from the surface.

I heard this happened to Dr. Doom once. It was actually a Doombot that was pregnant that time too.

Isn't it obvious what made him go a different direction? Disney. They don't need that controversy surrounding the director of the big film they have coming out this summer. The put the squash on this abortion thing.

It might not be that cold. What kind of fuel do they run on? It might be right next to the exhaust pipe.

oh no, she wanted an abortion. how sinful of her to want to exercise her free will to make her own informed decision. can't offend religious nutcases so we'd better make this one a robot so she can't have an abortion.

Wait... Where did the Buffybot come from?!?! Buffy might still be pregnant! She may have put the bot in place so she can deal with the issue!

@IronAngel I'm assuming your distaste is due to the fact that children may read these comics and it gives them the wrong impression. Dark Horse Comics has always been aimed at an older group (i.e. Alien, Predator...) Comics where body parts get ripped off.

Did you ever watch the series? I know abortion is a big deal, but the show took chances all the time too! Joss always made a SciFi fantasy, but always threw in reality for a spin. The episodes that immediately come to mind is the episode early in the series where Buffy ran away from home or the episode where Joyce had the tumor and started hallucinating and attacking Dawn, or "The Body". Abortion is a big deal, but its still a choice, not like coming home and finding a loved one dead on the floor.

@MassEx: Good point... but then again WD40 lubricant should have been a dead give away... even a vampire would smell that in the infamous fingered fragrance test.

She is a [frick]ing robot. Examples... Buffy, Scooby-Doo, Ringer, and this shitrag of a comic book. I keed, I keed. I would bang the shit outta Sarah Gellar.

@Greengo - Good point back at ya'. Maybe they use that food safe white oil...in anticipation of these situations? You know what, I think the Japaneses may actually being doing that now, forward thinkers that they are.

I read comics as an escape from the nonstop bullsh*t of politics. Sometimes I want a break from all of the nonstop posturing on every issue, especially since so much of it is all part of the false left-right paradigm that exists to keep us all arguing over nickel and dime nonsense and ignoring the truly bigger issues that are out there. I really hate it when creators decide to inject their political views into comic stories. Leave that garbage out of comics!
