The upcoming second season of The CW's Batwoman recently added a new recurring cast member in the form of Dominion actress Shivaani Ghai, and we now have a first look at her character.
Ghai will play Safiyah Sohail, a pirate who was romantically linked to Kate Kane's incarnation of Batwoman in the comics. It sounds like this take on the Queen of Coryana will serve as the main villain of the season, but she is also described as being "compassionate and charismatic with both physical and psychological prowess."
"She's not what we expected from season 1," Ghai tells EW. "She does come across as someone who is quite charming and kind. She has a definite soft spot for Alice. You will learn as we go on that there's definitely a much deeper relationship there."
"In season 2, Alice starts the season with nothing left to lose, so her perspective of Safiyah shifts a little bit," adds showrunner Caroline Dries. "She's less afraid because she's got [Safiyah] in her sights, and what does she have to lose? Her whole plan for killing her sister went down the drain."

As we know, Ruby Rose's Kate Kane will not return for Season 2, with Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder taking up the mantle of Gotham's Scarlet Knight. It remains to be seen how Safiyah will factor into the plot in Kane's absence.
Ghai's other TV credits include ABC’s The Catch and HBO’s Five Days. She has also appeared in movies such as London Has Fallen, Cleanskin and Fireflies.
Batwoman season 2 premiere this Sunday.
