Yesterday afternoon, Batwoman lost its Caped Crusader when it was revealed by The CW that Ruby Rose has departed the series. The reason hasn't been revealed (yet!), but a new actress will don the cape and cowl when season 2 lands in 2021. When she does, she will be joined by actor Warren Christie as Bruce Wayne (Tommy Elliot/Hush in disguise).
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the Batwoman finale, showrunner Caroline Dries was asked who she pictured as the Arrowverse's Batman before casting Christie, and mentioned Christian Bale, something which does make sense when he too disappeared from Gotham City.
"When I’m picturing Batman on our show, I kind of just picture Christian Bale because I’m obsessed with the Christopher Nolan movies," she admits. "When I got the show, I inherited this rule of no Batman, no Bruce Wayne, so it never occurred to me to start daydreaming."
Asked what made Christie the right fit, Dries adds, "His jawline is perfect. [Laughs] No, he’s such a good actor and when I saw he was available, I was like, 'Hello, yes, Warren Christie, please!' So I called him and told him what would be happening and was like, 'Please, please, please do this.' And he loved the idea because he’s a Batman fan and he has a kid and he thought it would be cool to tell his kid he’s playing Bruce Wayne. It kind of just worked out great."
Finally, the showrunner was asked to explain how the Bat-Team will respond to "Bruce's" shocking return. "That’s ultimately the drama of the story when we come back. Of course, they want Bruce to be back in their lives and so you kind of look past any kind of logic and it’s all replaced by hopefulness and happiness. It’s gonna take a minute for them to realize something is amiss."
Unfortunately, this interview took place before Rose walked away from Batwoman, so we don't have any comments from Dries on what led to the actress forcing The CW to recast after one season.
