BATWOMAN Stars Respond To Ruby Rose's Shock Exit From The CW Series

Ruby Rose has hung up her cape and cowl, and will no longer play the Arrowverse's Batwoman; here's how her co-stars, including Camrus Johnson and Nicole Kang, have reacted to the news of her departure!

On Tuesday, it was announced that Batwoman star Ruby Rose had decided to leave the Arrowverse and would not return as Kate Kane in season two. Since then, we've heard that it was a "mutual" parting of the ways due to Rose's unhappiness with her busy schedule and The CW's disappointment with how the actress has conducted herself on set.

Thus far, most of her co-stars have remained quiet about Rose no longer playing the Scarlet Knight, but Camrus Johnson, who plays Luke Fox, and Nicole Kang, who plays Kate's sister Mary, have both weighed in, but don't really say much about the actress.

"Family, those whose hearts are breaking break mineee," Johnson Tweeted. "What's important: we have a season 2. We will work our freakin butts off to give you an amazing season 2 that continues to represent the lgbtqa+ communities and people of color. We will keep going strong. Believe that."

Kang meanwhile, added: "I'm thinking of all of you. Big hug. Keep my head up if you keep yours up."

It's noteworthy that neither of them mention Rose. However, if reports that she acted poorly on set due to her frustrations with the demanding schedule of a series like Batwoman are correct, then there's a good chance neither of them will actually miss her

Doesnt seem like they are too broken up about it. For the most part thought Ruby was decent, but seems like its for the best if she she didnt like Vancouver or the long hours and it made her hard to work with. That is obviously her problem, just find a good actress and im sure the show will do fine.

@dracula - how could you not like vancouver? Sounds like Ruby is just high maintenance and couldn’t handle the workload.

@TheJustinHammer - This cast is shaping up nicely. Nic Hoult's great, Kittridge is coming back, and Pom Klementieff/Hayley Atwell/Rebecca Ferguson/Vanessa Kirby...

I'm glad this series is about superheroes and fighting crime. Very brave from that actor to point that out instead of pandering to a small portion of twitter.

"then there's a good chance neither of them will actually miss her"

Gotta admit this is a bit jumping to conclusions right

It was a job and she’s moving on to another one somewhere. I didn’t cry when the roofers finished up at my place and went onto the next house on their schedule and I wouldn’t expect the other actors to either.

@lawndart - Playing a barrier-breaking mainstream superhero shouldn't be just a job. There were a lot of people invested in her in the role becoming a cultural touchstone. (Maybe a bad bet, but that was the aim.)

Even as many as there have been by now, all superhero roles seem to leave a substantial mark on their performers. It's often the thing they're most remembered for.

Honest question: what is the highest profile superhero role that an actor has had that wasn't the role they're most known for?

Probably Clooney, since he's probably more famous for Danny Ocean. But I'm curious what other people would say. (And I mean main headlining hero kind of thing, not cameos or villains.)

@Spock0Clock - Ben Affleck is for sure. I feel like more people talk about Bale for his crazy transformations, and Val Kilmer is probably more known as Ice Man than Batman. I guess it's just a common thread for the bat boys.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/21/2020, 4:10 AM
@tmp3 - But what singular role has Affleck had that people know him more for, though? He's mostly just known for being Ben Affleck. Or Bale? Maybe American Psycho, but it feels like a stretch.

Kilmer/Ice Man I had said (but deleted/streamlined the comment), but Clooney is I think the bigger star with the clearer answer.

Spock0Clock - 5/21/2020, 6:08 AM
Oh wait, you said Affleck is, but I phrased my question [frick]erdly so now I don't know if you mean Affleck is best known for Batman or Affleck isn't best known for Batman.

You know what, just forget it. I'll float this question some other time in a better construction.

@Spock0Clock - I would say Val Kilmer's Batman? Definitely not the role he is best known for which I would submit Tombstone or Top Gun.

You add more to the list if we were to include villains.

@Spock0Clock - Cultural touchstone? That's a little much for a low budget superhero show on a small network. If it was a big screen production with an endearing performance, maybe, but her apparent lack of talent would have prevented that regardless.

I find that their responses, and their obvious lack of naming arose or showing any support for her future endeavors, is very telling and revealing and further adds credence to the reported issues behind the scenes.
patgreyc
patgreyc - 5/21/2020, 9:37 AM
@HeavyMetal4Life - That was my thought too. Don't hate her, but hopefully they find someone better to play the part or that is at least more invested.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 5/21/2020, 9:47 AM
@patgreyc - same. I wasn't championing for her to get kicked out, I'm not attacking her, I enjoy her in some things (John Wick 2, XXX3), also not asking for the show to end either (it was a really mediocre season but there is still potential and I'd rather see it get better than fail).

But yeah the response from those two is really really telling, they are saying a lot without saying anything. Whenever you normally have a character that decides to step away from a role on these shows, you typically have people praising them, saying how much they will miss them, supporting future actions, etc. (take Emily Bett Rickards, Willa Holland, Colton Haynes (the first time), Echo Kellum, etc. on Arrow for example). When the lead actor walks away and the two actors that associate with her the most on screen don't even mention her by name, let alone saying anything about working with them or supporting their future endeavors, that's just so revealing.

And you know, if that's how bad the chemistry and relations were behind the scenes, then ultimately this is for the better. These two certainly are invested in the show (Luke is the best part, Mary has become pretty good too in the back half) and hopefully they can get someone who is not only more invested in the role but also more of a pleasure to be around. Because lack of chemistry behind the scenes leads to lack of chemistry on screen; I thought that was just how Rose was trying to portray Kate, but now looking back its clear she just wasn't into the role after a while.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Either that, or the reports of safety issues on the set are true and the actors want to keep their jobs by not bringing it up.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 5/21/2020, 2:56 PM
@Tasmaniac - even if that was the case, and safety was an issue, that wouldn't cause these two to just have nothing to say about Rose. Sure, if safety was an issue, they wouldn't be allowed to talk about it. But just flat out not mentioning anything about Rose, like I noted in my previous comment? That's absurd and very striking. Safety has nothing to do with not wishing your co star well in the future, or saying you will miss working with them, etc.
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 5/21/2020, 10:47 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - It entirely depends on the studio’s attitude and how amicably things ended. If it didn’t end well, they might view support for Rose as taking sides. Employers can be arseholes too. But let’s face it, no ones know at this point other than those involved, so speculating on the reasoning behind tweets is completely pointless.

Anyone that actually stuck with the show would realize that it was barely anywhere close to being "cringey wokeness" as most parrot around and also understand what Camrus Johnson's words meant.

Perhaps they also signed somek kind of NDA and can't mention Ruby? Regardless, I am sure they will return with their A game in Season 2.
