The Hollywood Reporter and DC Comics have jointly announced that Epix has issued a 10-episode straight-to-series order for Pennyworth, a new drama set in the Batman universe that will tell the untold origin story of Bruce Wayne's most loyal friend.

As per DC Comics, "Pennyworth is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. It follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier who forms a security company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s billionaire father, in 1960’s London. Production will begin later this year, with a series premiere slated for 2019."

Gotham creator Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon will serve as showrunners for the upcoming freshman season, but the series will not be a Gotham spinoff as it explores a much younger Alfred and his past as a soldier.

With the film slate in a perpetual state of flux, DC has really been doubling down on their television series. In addition to Pennyworth, they also have Titans, Young Justice: OutsidersHarley Quinn, Swamp Thing, Metropolis, and Doom Patrol coming up for the 2018/2019 season and beyond.
