LEGENDS OF TOMORROW's JSA Will Hail From The '40s

DC's Legends of Tomorrow will respect comic book cannon as season 2's new superhero team, the Justice Society of America will operate in the 1940s. The JSA first appeared in All Star Comics #3 (1940).

With a very young-ish Hourman appearing in the season one finale of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, comic book fans were unsure whether he hailed from present day or the past.  However, it has now been confirmed that Rex Tyler and his Justice Society of America teammates hail from the 1940s.  This coincides with the teams formation in All Star Comics #3, which debuted in 1940.  The JSA hold the disctinction of being the first group of superheroes to form a team in comic books.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Brandon Routh told the site, "Well we’re going back to the ’40s, for the JSA. That’s where we meet the JSA. And I think we’ll spend a fair bit of time there, in different countries within the 1940s. It’s the focus of the first couple episodes. And there’s a couple times we go way back. I actually don’t know how much I can say about where we go, I’ll have to ask Marc [Guggenheim[ that question. I mean, further back than we’ve gone… well… to one extent we go wayyyyy back, but for a portion of it we go… pretty far back."

Routh is likely referring to when the team will travel back to ancient Egypt.  Marc Guggenheim previously hinted on Twitter that the team would be taking a trip back to Ancient Egypt, perhaps for a final send off for Hawkman and Hawkgirl?

The revealed JSA roster includes Hourman, Citizen Steel, Star-Girl, Obsidian, and Dr. Mid-Nite.

The second season premieres Thursday, October 13 on The CW.

This can go either very well or very badly if the CW doesn't perfectly nail the 40's era...

Are they from Earth 2?

I don't watch the show so I don't know but if they aren't then Earth 1 had superhumans and such BEFORE the whole Arrow/ Flash thing started?

@PesciGotPepsi - I believe the JSA, at least in the comics, are from Earth 2

@PesciGotPepsi - Yes, the original JSA was Earth 2, and there would be an annual crossover between them and the JLA of Earth 1.

Though if they do exist on Earth 1, by the time of Arrow season 1, super-people might just be considered urban legends. Like the metahumans during Flash season 1.

Those are different situations. Vixen didn't exist before Arrow and GA. There's no way the JSA can exist on Earth 1 and Arrow not know about them or by extension, meta-humans. Time Masters aren't Meta-Humans aren't even from Arrow and Flash's time, since they're born in the future.

I hope they take inspiration from Watchmen and make the suits really corny looking because it was the 40s.

But I'm sure it's going to be all leather as usual.

I hope we get to see Sandman, Green Lantern, Wildcat, Star Man, Spectre & Dr. Fate being on the team.

This does raise a few questions like if Hourman came from the past then how come the team even Rip didn't know who he was. Also does this mean that Superheroes existed in the Arrowverse before Oliver Queen became the Green Arrow. I mean I remember in Arrow's 3rd season there was that Wildcat dude who was a vigilante before Oliver even got stranded on the island but I'm guessing he didn't have that much impact than GA did.

In the arrowverse the perception is there were no superheroes operating before arrow and flash publicly so i wonder what the take on 1940s jsa will be. Maybe tjey wete convert.

Ok so I guess Barry doesn't become the founder of the JSA then some one explain that to me

@DjTheMarvelKid - Why would Barry be the founder of the JSA? Jay Garrick is the only Flash that ever existed within the structure of the JSA.

Waitasec----how do Stargirl and Obsidian even fit in with this? They weren't even from the 40's, their mentors and/or parents were (respectively, Ted Knight the first Starman, and Green Lantern Alan Scott). Seems like only Hourman, Citizen Steel, and Dr, Mid-Nite would be the 40's guys. Hourman's confirmed since he's Rex Tyler, Steel and Mid-Nite are the puzzlers. If they go with the 40's versions, we'll have Hank Heywood I and Charles McNider, but the show could also pull the rug from under us and go with Hank Heywood III (the Commander Steel of the Detroit-era JLA) or Nate Heywood (from the post-Infinite Crisis JSA) for Citizen Steel; and Pieter Cross, the third Mid-Nite.

I feel as if since the JSA members all eventually die of the legends create a new JSA to honor the original along with Barry Supergirl and GA
