PEACEMAKER: James Gunn On Those Huge Cameos And VERY Different Alternate Ending - SPOILERS

Peacemaker wrapped-up its first season today, and in a new interview, writer/director James Gunn comments on the episode's massive cameos and a very different ending he had in mind. Spoilers follow.

The season finale of Peacemaker hit HBO Max today, and the episode certainly left us with a lot to discuss!

By far the biggest talking point was a last-minute appearance from members of the Justice League (well, some of 'em), with Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller reprising their respective roles as Aquaman and The Flash for a hilarious exchange with John Cena's Christopher Smith. During a new interview, writer/director James Gunn explained how the cameos came about.

"Jason, I have known for a while," Gunn tells Deadline. "So, we had a preexisting relationship, and also Peter Safran, who’s the producer on the show and he’s one of my closest allies and friends, he’s friends with Jason because he produces the Aquaman movies. So, we asked Jason. We knew Jason was probably going to do it very early on. Ezra came in as more of a surprise. I found out through a couple of friends that Ezra liked my films, and so then I connected with him and asked him to do it, as well. So, yeah, we were just lucky with the two of them."

Superman and Wonder Woman also appear, but are kept in the shadows. Unfortunately, Gunn doesn't clarify whether or not this was supposed to be Henry Cavill's version of the Man of Steel!

The season wraps up with Smith in contemplative form after saving the world from an alien threat... but did he really do what was best for his planet? Sophie does present a compelling argument before he shoots her, and Gunn actually considered ending the finale on a very different note at one point.

"I went through different endings then just what I was going to say in that moment. I think that Peacemaker is making the choice that is — it’s a step forward for himself and his own vitality, his own spirituality. Maybe it’s not the right thing to do for the world, and so, yes, that complexity is something that I thought of as being part of the ending of the show. Until that time, I thought different things. I thought that there was a chance that it would end with Peacemaker joining the butterflies, you know?"

Well, that would have been a twist viewers didn't see coming for sure!

Great interview, nice to hear Warner is pretty "chill" when it comes to DC characters other than Batman (or maybe they just dont care).

And crazy the Flash scene was shot on Disney time, while the Chukwudi audition was shot on Warner time, and then fans keep fighting each other.

James Gunn said Marvel shot Ezra's cameo on the set of GotG Vol. 3.

Momoa was expected with the Safran connection. Miller seems pretty down to do any tv cameos what with the CW one. Wonder why Cavill and Gadot were never discussed.

@Nightmare - well they are done with Cavil

Gadot id expect its because she doesn’t have a movie coming out soon

Wouldnt be surprised if Jason and Ezra filmed their bits during filming of their movies and were added in

@Nightmare - Cavill is done as Superman, and Gal was either shooting something else, or maybe at her home...in Israel.

Snyder Cult going rabid on twitter about Aquaman being a joke again
TheLobster
TheLobster - 2/17/2022, 11:52 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I mean but seriously.. it does kind of suck that we’re reverting back to fish jokes for Aquaman. Would have been funnier if they did a more original joke about Aquaman or made Flash the butt of the joke ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/17/2022, 12:13 PM
@TheLobster - "I hear you can talk to fish" was a joke present in the Snyder version of Justice League, and then he removed it.

@TheHumanSpider2 -

1) where has it been confirmed that this was always in Snyder’s Cut? Keep in mind that Joss was rewriting scenes before Snyder got the boot

2) what’s worse - “I hear you can talk to fish?” Vs “you [frick] fish bro”

Hmmmmm
TheLobster
TheLobster - 2/17/2022, 3:41 PM
@Nightmare - nope Snyder always had his original design set before WB made him change it. Just look at the post credits scene in BvS ultimate cut.

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/17/2022, 5:02 PM
@TheLobster - Because that line was in the first trailer, directed and presented by Zack Snyder.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 2/17/2022, 6:58 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - yeah but I’m pretty sure that even that early - Joss was still ghostwriting.

However, even if that’s not true (I believe it is tbh), that’s still way better than making jokes about Aquaman [frick]ing fishes and turning him right back into a joke.

I'm a huge DC fan all my life. In a short time Warner executives have destroyed the original material created by great writers like Ostrander, Wolfman or Moore by giving their franchises to mediocre writers like Gunn or Berlanti without any creative control. Little by little DC/Warner became a mediocre version of Troma, and I say this as a fan of Troma. Not to mention that the Arrowverse and the Green Lantern movie became a bad version of the Power Rangers of the 90's. They have worn down great characters and franchises by giving them to writers who claim to know the source material but all they do is destroy or ridicule those great stories. Or change the characters for political reasons as Lindelof did with Watchmen. There's a reason they can't beat Marvel/Disney in earnings and critical acclaim. And that Feige also stepped on some of the source material but not to this level of disaster as they have done at DC / Warner. At this point not even Batman can save them. They may have a good review from a few critics, but at the box office they will only lose money and destroy franchises that have a lot of potential. I have friends and family who I can no longer convince to go see a DC/Warner movie or TV show but who go to see Marvel/Disney movies 2 or 3 times or talk all the time about Disney+ TV shows What good is it for DC/Warner to have an Emmy or a good review if they don't make any money? The Suicide Squad made it to "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes but was a box office disaster. Gunn promised Ostrander's Suicide Squad and it ended up being a SpongeBob episode, with Patrick Star as the main villain (Starro was supposed to be scary not funny). And that's not to mention that most of the rest of the previous DC/Warner movies were destroyed by critics and couldn't match the blockbuster that is Marvel/Disney. They have the greatest characters and franchises in the history of comics and they only know how to do mediocrity with them.

I know that now many fans of this show are going to come out and insult me and tell me I don't know how many lies about why I write this, but if they were really objective, loved these characters and knew a little about what they are in their source material, they would realize that it is useless to defend something that the only thing it does is destroy them little by little. What happens if The Batman or The Flash do not sweep the box office? What's left? Supergirl went from 12 million viewers to less than a third of that to give another example. DC/Warner has no future like this...

Enjoyed the show, but god was that JL cameo cringe. It's a perfect example of my biggest problem with Gunn. As funny as he can be he let's humor undercut the dramatic beats way to much. I mean really they did all that for an Aquaman f%cks fish joke?

It's also shows why I never wanted Gunn to make a Superman, Avengers, or JL film. The guy works the best when hes dealing with misfits.

Random cameos were fresh and cool like 10 years ago. This just felt forced and really cheap with body doubles standing in for Superman and Wonder Woman. Imagine Marvel using a lame body double for a Captain America cameo? Why even include them if you don't have the ability to actually get the actors?
