TITANS Season 3 Puts A VERY Different Spin On "Death In The Family" With A Shock Twist - SPOILERS

Titans has returned to HBO Max, but the show's take on "Death in the Family" isn't exactly what you'll remember from the comic books. Find out what happens - and how it ties into Red Hood - right here...

Titans has returned to HBO Max for its third season, and the premiere certainly kicked things off with a bang. The series has taken a lot of liberties with the source material since launching, so it's not overly surprising that "Death in the Family" plays out a little differently here than it did on the page.

In the episode, Jason Todd manages to track down The Joker (who is never shown beyond a blurry sillouette) and ends up being brutally attacked by a crowbar wielding Clown Prince of Crime.

Later, Bruce Wayne bursts into Dick Grayson's room and throws a crowbar to the ground before exclaiming, "He started it. I ended it." Nightwing is understandably confused, and it's then the Dark Knight responds, "Do you know what he was doing as I caved in his skull? He was laughing. He laughed at me because he'd won. You and Barbara were right. It's all a game I should've stopped playing a long time ago. It's over for me now. It's over."

After telling Dick to "be a better Batman," he flees, and with that, we learn this Caped Crusader has just murdered The Joker in retribution for what the villain did to Robin.

This is definitely a major departure from the source material, and leaves Nightwing in a position to pick up where his mentor left off. It seems like Batman's time in Titans has also ended, though the limitations put on the series by Warner Bros. means it was always unlikely we'd actually see him suit up properly on screen.

As for Jason, it's no secret his story is going to continue as the Red Hood. How that will differ to what's come before remains to be seen, but we're betting this version will also surprise us...

Haven't watched it, waiting for it to drop on Netflix here. But this is pretty much expected from the trailer.

Kinda makes Jason's flipping over to the dark side illogical but okay. Character motivations have never been this show's strength.

Sooo, am I the only one that remembers Blackfyre and her galactic fleet are coming to burn Earth orrr...? I feel like the writers forgot about that very minor plot point.

And I'm still gonna watch it...

@Waddles - They really are. It should be called 'Nightwing and them' at this point. ☹️

@RitoRevolto - They didn't forget the 4th episode is titled Blackfire.

@RitoRevolto - No that's happening too, just not a priority compared to the Batfamily. And I'm fine with that.

@RitoRevolto - That's true but I don't even mind. The only thing this show ever did even half-right was the Batman stuff. So personally I'm glad they're playing to their strengths and leaning heavily into that. I couldn't care less about Blackfire.

@Waddles - who co-signed this show honestly? I was down with a titans show especially with young adult versions of them but god damn this is basically nightwing and friends handle Nightwings problems

Jason: I BECAME THE PUNISHER BECAUSE YOU REFUSED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE JOKER!
Bruce: I killed the Joker.
Jason: YOU SON OF A -- wait, wut?

the only thing i liked was barbara. the episode was the same old mess and bruce wayne is so unconvincing. their biggest problem will always be that they tell and never show.

The show started with "[frick] Batman" and has not relented on that mission since

@OmegaDaGrodd - To be fair, I think if we'd met this Batman at that point we all would've been more understanding.

This show is really living up to it's tagline and saying "F*ck Batman"

If Batman killed the Joker why would Red Hood be upset? If anything Jason would agree with Bruce for killing his murderer. His main reason to become Red Hood in the first place is now eliminated.

The entire season which is adapting Under the Red Hood is now missing the entire point of the comic and the animated movie.

Also this show has gone all in on insane Batman. The previous season made him seem more fatherly and that he hadn't killed before. Even the dream sequence from S1 wasn't real and Dick forgave him for his upbringing. Now they've made him a full on psychopath who recruits kids and makes them into Robins. It's like a twisted elseworld idea only they've made it the main canon.

@IronMandarin - I was thinking the same thing. If Bruce killed the joker, then why is Jason still angry?

Why is anyone pissed at this Bruce? He shows emotion. By killing the joker, he's shown to view them as more than assets or sacrifices for his "war".
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 8/12/2021, 4:32 PM
@IronMandarin - Well this is an alternate version so his motivations don't have to be exactly the same. I don't see this world as "main canon" like you say and I'm not sure why we should view it that way. Judging from the pilot, I think they're gonna say the drugs he was taking were screwing with his brain or something along those lines.

And I think the reason they had Bruce go kinda crazy is to show the effect of grief on him. I've never cared for this show's writing but I enjoyed this episode on the whole.

hated it so much.
bruce Wayne is fragile is shit. this is unbatman ever for me. I'm trying so hard to watch until episode 2 and I was like, what the heck I'm watching?
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 8/12/2021, 3:29 PM
@solskulldeath - I wasn't a fan of him snapping but fragile is a wild word to describe a dude who has a breakdown after his child soldier adopted son is killed because of a war he's recruited him into 😭

@OmegaBlack13 - but at the same time he was busy looking for candidates as his new sidekick and I was what the [frick]? the batman I know he never wants to take another new sidekick after the Jason died and yeah the only person he considers to take a new sidekick is time drake since time is quite genius and got the detective skill that bruce always wanted as his sidekick....even Stephanie and carrier kelly is not what bruce always wanted

Enjoying it as an elseworld's take, but hope they faithfully adapt the Under The Red Hood story on the big screen without the changes they have made here.

The end of episode 3 though..... F*******KKKKK!!!!!

No good giving us 3 episodes & then dragging it out weekly, should have just whacked up all 13 episodes!

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - That's basically how I'm watching the show or any comic book property. It's just an Elseworld's take and theyre gonna take some liberties with the story.

That ending has me all kinds of torn up. Was pretty shocked they went through with it.

@Himura - I really was not expecting it, or the way they did it with the double bluff & what actually caused it to happen.

Was also expecting the heroic save from SB at the 'last second' so to speak. Still can't believe it.

The same critique that goes for a cynical Superman goes for edgy Batman: moments like this don't feel impactful enough if we haven't spent enough time with who the character is supposed to be.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 8/12/2021, 3:38 PM
@bkmeijer - Yeah watching this show has made me realize I'm a lot more unforgiving to shows being unfaithful than movies. Maybe it's because movies feel like "the" adaptation whereas a show just feels like an interpretation to me. Or maybe it's because of the cinematic universe thing where [frick]ing up Superman in this movie now means we're operating in an entire universe where Superman is like this.

Anyway, I say all that to say I'm not huge on this edgy Batman, especially when I feel like the last season did it better than I would've expected.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 8/13/2021, 1:41 AM
@OmegaBlack13 - Glen is great casting as Bruce in my opinion, he's just not that great utilized. But thats probably also because the show has the identity crisis of not knowing if it wants to be a Titans or Batfamily show
