GAME OF THRONES Showrunners Finally Explain Why Lady Stoneheart Wasn't Included In The HBO Series

One of the biggest questions fans have about Game of Thrones is why Catelyn Stark never returned as Lady Stoneheart, and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss now break their silence on that decision!

HBO's Game of Thrones took a lot of liberties with George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga, but mostly stayed faithful to the author's work. One major unexpected omission was Lady Stoneheart, a resurrected Catelyn Stark who makes only a couple of appearances in the books and seems intent on revenge against those who orchestrated the Red Wedding (understandable).

In upcoming book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss break their silence on why the fan-favorite Lady Stoneheart wasn't included in their TV series.

"There was never really much debate about [including Lady Stoneheart]," Benioff says. "There is that one great scene." Weiss adds: "That was the only debate. The scene where she first shows up is one of the best ‘holy s---’ moments in the books. I think that scene is where the public response came from."

Surprisingly, one big reason Lady Stoneheart was missing is because the executive producers wanted to protect what Martin has planned for her in the books.

"Part of the reason we didn’t want to put it in had to do with things coming up in George’s books that we don’t want to spoil [by discussing them]," Benioff explains, not making much sense when they would obviously later reveal who ends up on the Iron Throne...unless Martin has a different ending in mind!

They also felt that using Lady Stoneheart risked lessening the impact of the Red Wedding and Jon Snow's eventual resurrection, with Benioff concluding by noting, "Michelle Fairley is such a great actress, to bring her back as a zombie who doesn’t speak felt like diminishing returns."

That's a sentiment disappointed fans are unlikely to agree with, but at least it's now been cleared up.

Still can't quite believe how bad season 8 was. Complete travesty.

@MarvelousMarty - It's so bad, that anecdotally, I haven't heard any mention of the show in a looooong time - online or in real life.

Like this show that gripped the world every year for half a decade just... dropped off the radar.

This is about as dumb as I expected. Them not comprehending that a character can be deep without speaking is typically shallow, and trying to claim it would "weaken the Red Wedding" comes off as claiming to be better than the source while also ignoring they'd already made the Red Wedding MORE severe than it was in the books.

But worst of all, they basically admit here to not liking notes Martin gave them about the direction of the story and just dropping a huge plotline in order to avoid it. As an aspiring writer, it honestly makes me angry these hacks are still getting paid millions.

Just when I think that I couldn't dislike these two any more than I already have, they one up themselves into the tightest and most compressing corners and say garbage like this.

It just goes to show that they really didn't know what to do if not for GRRM's material.

The show should have never been placed into their greedy hands. They left such a skidmark that'll never be purged from our minds.

"Part of the reason we didn’t want to put it in had to do with things coming up in George’s books that we don’t want to spoil [by discussing them],"

That's actually pretty reasonable, because they left lot of things about the story tbh. It could be that Martin had some things that he didn't wanna reveal before the books.

So show-runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were just lazy? They couldn't make two very different resurrections form the book make sense and not feel too similar? That seems like lazy ass writing to me.

Then again these are the same assholes who refused to finish out a show everyone loved and took a dump on their own show...

Never gunna watch another thing David Benioff and Dan Weiss make again.

Pretty sure you’ll never have to worry about that lol

Still hoping she's the one that resurrects Jon in the books as part of her redemption arc.

Cool now ask them why they abandoned the Azor Ahai plot line that they strung us along for for 10 years...

All I know was that the final season was the single biggest disappointment in TV history. They phoned it in and it was terrible.
