Multiple sources are reporting that HBO has officially issued a series order for Damon Lindelof's new Watchmen adaptation and that the premium cable television network is currently eyeing a likely 2019 premiere date.

Lindelof has previously described his upcoming series as a remix of Alan Moore's classic source material with an original story, set in present day, that will explore both new and old characters while asking new groundbreaking questions in the same universe.

The all-star ensemble cast will feature Regina King (American Crime), Jeremy Irons (Justice League), Don Johnson (Django Unchained), Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Adelaide Clemens (Rectify), Andrew Howard (Truth or Dare), Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow), Frances Fisher (Titanic), Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous), Sara Vickers (Endeavour), Dylan Schombing (Sharp Objects), Lily Rose Smith (The Vampire Diaries), and Adelynn Spoon.

The acclaimed Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons graphic novel was previously adapted as a feature film by Zack Snyder (Justice League) in 2009. A Director's Cut and Ultimate Cut of the film were also later released on home video.

I honestly don't know what to think about this show lol.

Lindelof is absolutely great, and it's HBO...but i'm not sure I reallllly want more Watchmen, personally.

Definitely will watch and will eat crow if it kicks ass.

@Menks123 -
Just think of it as a contemporary semi-sequel to the original graphic novel. That's pretty much how Damon Lindelof described it. Anyone expecting an accurate near shot-for-shot translation of the original graphic novel can watch Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut. Even if the show is bad, we've got nothing to lose.

If I could just go back in time and erase the Watchmen film (although it wasn't completely terrible) , and make this a definitive adaptation of the original Watchmen graphic novel, I'd think about being excited.

@FleischerSupes

You’re saying you can’t enjoy this series because you didn’t like the movie version from 2009?

They’re not tied together...this doesn’t even seem to be a direct adaptation.

@regularmovieguy - Nah I'm just saying I'd rather HBO have adapted the original material to begin with, rather than have the Snyder movie and then also this new series based on new material.

@FleischerSupes - I get what you are saying, and kind of agree, but while Watchmen was fine, I have an issue deification of folks like Alan Moore and to an extent Frank Miller and their work in comics, and I know I will get a lot of crap for this, but please bear with me...

There are a lot of people who look at stories/books like Watchmen and The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns and put them on a pedestal that is so unbelievably high, and I don’t think it is 100% justified. I enjoy reading comics, and while there are some really cool comic book stories, many are just great comic book stories that feel very much like many other comic books.

Moore and Miller and a few others were some of the first to really imagine some amazing tales that happened to be about comic book characters and really took some chances that most comic book stories did not.

I guess I am saying that a LOT of comic book stories are and have been limited to a certain, say, color palette, and these guys broke the mold at time when many were very similar. And they deserve a ton of credit. But there are others who came later and have written some AMAZING tales that don’t get the same drooling over because there have now been many more writers who realized that the medium doesn’t just have to be solely about heroes thwarting villains. There can be depth and complexities and subtleties.

I would say that to me, some of Neil Gaiman’s writing on Sandman is better than Alan Moore’s 2 comic bibles, and yet it doesn’t seem to evoke the same type of fanaticism.

And that is fine. It was just something I was thinking about.

@TomSolo - Yeah I'm one who thinks the Watchmen film may have been too faithful, superficially at least, to the source material while missing the spirit of it. In that way, if HBO had just adapted Watchmen and taken some liberties it might have been a good thing. Game of Thrones is better than the books in many ways for example.

@FleischerSupes - I definitely agree about being too faithful but not capturing the spirit. But I wonder if that could ever happen in a movie that would appeal to the GA and be a watchable length.

Like many cb stories worth puttng on screen, I feel an HBO type format would work best.

@Solarkalel85 - She's really great in her role in the Ray Charles biopic, "Ray" from 2005. That performance has always stuck out to me. Also, her role in the Chris Rock comedy, Down to Earth. Pretty good film.

And I agree, she was amazing in the Leftovers as well.

@Solarkalel85 - DUDE. I implore you to make it the next film you watch.

Hands down Jamie Foxx's best performance of his career.

Probably one of my favorite biopics of all time too.

@Solarkalel85 - I’m not normally a fan a biopics, but “Ray” is truly excellent. Charles actually picked Jamie Foxx to play him, and man, did he choose wisely. Foxx kills it as Ray Charles. I am pretty certain he did all of the piano playing in the film (he is a phenomenal player in real life), and I think he did the singing as well.

Also, for a biopic, I feel they really got around to most of Charles’s more defining moments in his life and career, something I feel is very lacking in films like “Ali” and “Walk the Line”. In those films, there was a clear angle the filmmakers wanted to tell, and I really just wanted to see a movie about the person.

“Ray” is really great. I forgot I was watching Jamie Foxx pretty quickly. Huge recommendation from me as well.

@TomSolo - I'm with you, biopic's usually suck or are just basic because they really only ever tell the stories we already know and never add anything to the legacies.

With that said, the acting in Ray was top notch and you really empathized with him but at the same time saw he wasn't that great a person at times.
