12 YEARS A SLAVE Scribe John Ridley Gives An Update On His Marvel/ABC TV Series
While promoting the success of the debut season of his limited series American Crime, 12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley gave a brief update on the status of his super-secret collaboration with Marvel & ABC. Hit the jump to see what he had to say!
It's been a while since we've heard anything from John Ridley about his mysterious Marvel TV series in development at ABC. Currently, it's not known who it features, or when it will even air. Sadly, the 12 Years A Slave writer remained fairly tight-lipped about any new details. "The only thing I can say about it is that I’m really in love with that project" Ridley told the AV Club, "I continue to give Marvel and ABC credit because within their system they’re still trying to bring in other voices. I’m in the development stage where I get down on my knees and pray that it goes forward."
Soon after his involvement with Marvel was announced, rumors quickly began to spread about the show's main focus. One popular theory claimed that Ridley had initially been offered to showrun a 'Cloak & Dagger' series, but he took more interest in a show starring 'Kamala Khan' - a.k.a. 'Ms. Marvel'. While Ridley did not deny anything specifically, he did appear to dismiss this rumor. "I can tell you that 99.99999 percent of everything that was put on social media was so phenomenally off-the-mark," he declared. "Not to be arcane, but the rumors are truly off-the-mark. But it’s in a fun way. I’m just glad to be part of the conversation."
Assuming those are the rumors he's talking about, that would appear to dismiss the possibility of a Ms. Marvel show happening any time soon. If not her, then who could it be? It was said that Ridley's show would involve the 'reinvention' of a classic a Marvel Comics character. Regardless, we're unlikely to find out for the moment, with the Academy Award winning writer currently very busy prepping a second season of his ABC limited series, American Crime.
