AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Series Finale Originally Included A Reference To AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR's "Snap"

While evidence appears to be mounting that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showrunner Jed Whedon claims there was once going to be a reference to Avengers: Infinity War.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s final season saw the team trapped in an alternate timeline, but they ultimately managed to use the Quantum Realm to travel back to their own reality. However, upon landing in 2020, it was clear Agent Coulson and company were in a world where Thanos' attack on Earth could have never happened (S.H.I.E.L.D., meanwhile, was totally absent from Avengers: Endgame).

Despite that, showrunner Jed Whedon has explained in an interview with The New York Times that there were originally plans to reference the Mad Titan's actions in Avengers: Infinity War

"Some of the stuff they did with time travel in 'Endgame' indicated that there are other timelines where other adventures are occurring," he explains. "We’re following the multi-verse rule. The only way that someone survives Thanos’s snap in the movies is go into the quantum realm, and we originally did plan to give that a mention — because we used the quantum realm to move between timelines — but it got cut for time."

The team being in the Quantum Realm/an alternate timeline would certainly explain why none of them disappeared, but it doesn't address why the 2020 they landed in was such a hopeful place, clearly not affected in any way by half the population having gone missing thanks to Thanos.

Ultimately, it seems easier to just assume Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. always took place in an alternate timeline following the events of The Avengers, especially as the movies have never referenced the TV show. If any of the characters return, then we'll obviously know otherwise, but it's hard to say for sure.

What do you guys think?

I could be wrong, but I thought it was explained in the finale that the only reason they were no longer in continuity with the MCU is because they traveled to another universe? I thought Fitz cleared all that up?

Fitz did clear it up. Aos is 100% in the mcu proper according to everyone involved with it's creation and the creation of the movies. Aos, inhumans, and the Netflix shows as well as agent Carter,cloak and dagger,and runaways are all in the mcu unless rebooted otherwise. It is insane that people want to argue about it. If one watches these shows it is very obvious that any separation they have from the movies is just a result of the tv and movie writers not being in the same room.

@Hulkh8liars -
It is an act of trolling fans of these shows. While I don't like it one bit (the trolling) I do it from time to time on the DC shows. Dawson's Creek in Spandex.

@LiteraryJoe - he problem is that IW took place in 2018 and AoS showed a S5 scene dated on screen as taking place in 2018. Add in 2 "and a year laters" in S6 & S7 and lo and behold you are in a 2020 that is pre-snap. That is out of the main MCU continuity.

They should have retconned on screen and they didn't.

I havent watched the final season, will watch it on netflix

Nice that they tried to keep some connection to the mcu with how time travel works, but doesnt that kind of create a plot hole in season 5.

Like if removing things doesnt change the present, only the future of the time that it was taken from, then shouldnt Deke not exist in the future they arrive in at the start of season 5. Fitz and Simmons were removed from the timeline so until they return shouldnt there be no grandchild for them to meet.

To me regardless of timelines, Agent Coulson is the defining factor that connects AoS to the MCU.
