Kevin Feige On Movie-TV Crossovers; “It’s about finding the right way to do that”

One of the many questions us fan have, is why they dont crossover the MCU shows and movies, or when it will happen. Kevin Feige has spoken yet again on the issue.

So far, we are 12 movies and 4 TV shows into the MCU, while the shows have referenced the events from the movies and featured characters from the movies, the movies on the other hand have not. Kevin Feige has spoken about the issue.

It’s about finding the right way to do that,” Feige told io9. “And the honest answer is, movies are developed so far in advance that a lot of those things [Inhumans, Hydra monsters, etc.] weren’t done when we started to film [Captain America: Civil War].

This makes sense considering that they started writting the script for Civil War around 2013-2014 before S2 and 3 of SHIELD aired, which introduced the Inhumans and expanded on HYDRA history and way before Daredevil and Jessica Jones aired. and they started filming before S3 of SHIELD, S1 of Jessica and S2 of Daredevil aired.

Feige continues “Or, if we were to do something in a film that absolutely handcuffs what the team can do in season 2 of whatever show, they don’t want to be handcuffed. They shouldn’t be handcuffed. It’s just finding the right time and right place to do it.” he added “Look, I love heroes, I love seeing as many heroes as possible interacting and surprising fans with their presence but, like Spider-Man, Ant-Man and Black Panther in this movie, like Falcon in Ant-Man, it just has to be absolutely blended with the story at hand, and not just, ‘Hey who is that who just drove past?’ That would be easy. We could do that in post—but that, I think, does a disservice to the characters.”

Civil War would have been perfect. I hope they at least make reference to all the insane vigilante shit that is happening in New York.

@MrAisA - dont get your hopes up, as the script was written before Daredevil and Jessica Jones aired.

@eagc1995 - Specific dialog can change day of the shoot, background news reports are all inserted in post, and there were re-shoots in late January. I don't expect a cameo, just some acknowledgement.

@MrAisA - They aren't going to improv dialogue with a reference that would require at least 3 or 4 different departmental approvals.

The improv stuff is usually only jokes. Like, there will be a scene with a punch-line, so they'll film Paul Rudd/Chris Pratt/Comedic Bro saying 100 different punch-lines, and then pick the one that the editing team/director/producers thought was the funniest. Then in the press interviews: "oh yeah, a lot of the dialogue was just what came naturally when we were filming because we're all best buds"

@nibs - Who said anything about improv? Actors can get new versions of a script day of, after any change has gone through all the channels you mention. I'm not talking about changes that alter the plot in any way, just some additional fan service most likely delivered during some exposition.

Netflix and TV shows characters in the movies? Scandalous! Over Ike Perlmutter's dead body.

A crossover should hold weight. It should be more than a simple walk by down the street. It should be a momentous occasion where the heroes from TV have an arc and a meaningful place in the films they join in. DD, JJ and the others have been so well fleshed out on their shows that they DESERVE to matter when they enter the films. It has to matter to the story. References and Easter eggs are fine (a mention on the news, a newspaper story, a subtle reference through dialogue), but when the characters themselves appear, they should be integral to the film.

It takes time. Anything worth having in the long run, takes time and patience. They have to figure out how to do it and not be hasty and just jump on it to please fans right away.

I agree what Kevin Feige says is correct. But I don't believe the film side is the problem. It's Ike Perlmutter who controls the television characters. I don't think he is a particular fan of Feige since Marvel Studios pulled out of his control last September. He can keep television characters separate in spite if he wants to.

The test will be if The Defenders can be folded into Infinity War. All the primary actors have been cast for The Defenders. So there is no mystery of who the film guys would be writing for. The television side knows when the Russos are shooting the films. AND coincidentally, Charlie Cox says the Defenders will be filming late this year -the same time as Infinity War. Which means ALL four actors are together at the same time and possibly available at some point during The Defenders shoot for Infinity War. It's all about the film and television side logistically being able to work together. I can see no reason why The Defenders can't be in the film -even if its a small part. There are too many obstacles removed -EXCEPT for Ike Perlmutter.
