"That was a little lame, but the episode is hella promising"

As someone who enjoyed the show, for the most part, for the first season and a half, I finally realized I wasn't at all entertained by it anymore over a month ago. Whedon's comments, though at least half joking, only reinforced that the connection between the movies and show is a one way street.

Either way, your quote I have above, to me, epitomizes the series.

This season will end with a big BANG, no doubt. The showrunners have said that not everyone will walk out of this conflict, but at least one, credible, person will threaten Ward and mean it, saying "When I find him, I'm going to kill him" and seeing as Ward has Bobbi, I have a feeling that the threat will come from Hunter.

I will thinking that Mack would be the person who does not make it alive, but would that cause an uproar over killing yet another black character.

Lastly, what the hell is that thing in the hold of the ship? Is it really something that will kill inHumans and if so, why did Fury have it and why did he want it destroyed. This is going to be so much fun.

Its not so much that I need constant references etc, its more that I no longer believe the show exists in the movie universe. The movies exist for the show, but not the other way around. So that makes the show superfluous for me.

I obviously still keep up via episode summaries, but I realized io9's summaries were more exciting than the episodes themselves. So if it's ever reversed and I end up being wrong and, say, the Inhumans movie will be intricately tied to this show, at least I will be somewhat in the know.

I also don't fault anyone who still enjoys it. I don't think it's a horrible show, nor do I think anyone is lesser for being into it. It just lost almost all of its flavor for me.

I agree I think this season has been better because of the loose connection to the movies. I Iove it a lot more because instead of increasing what has already been established there expanding the universe, similar to what guardians did. They expanded the universe instead of just adding to it.

@ruadh not knowing if you have seen AOU yet or not I won't get into explicit detail but this Tuesday's episode of shield staked direct claim as to the causing one of the events in AOU. Specifically the theta protocol. They don't mention it directly in the movie but they make a clear cause and effect connection in the show.

@soforizo and @ruadh

I agree with both of you. I enjoy this show when it has less to do with the movie storylines, but the general attitude of the movies that the Agents material isn't important to the MCU continuity detracts from the experience.

Even so, it's pretty good right now. They seem to have these lulls where they tread water mid-season that are practically unwatchable (the SHIELD vs. SHIELD storyline was high octane yawn fuel), but when they hit their stride, it can be damn good.

@Bulldawg2014

But it's still a one-way street, though. Skye, May, and Simmons could wash Captain America's motorcycle every weekend on the show, but it may as well be Coulson's fan-fiction if it doesn't receive some sort of mention in the movies.

that little gift she gives her is what just let skye know that she is lying. She has said before that she had nothing left of Skye, that would have been around her neck when Hydra took her. Now she's got evidence that Gonzales gave her that why would he try to kill her after giving her that?

@Bulldawg2014

I appreciate the spoiler consideration, but I have seen AOU and am aware of that connection. And that is another example of why I don't think it's really connected. Its not really enough to have little "yeah, we did that" claims. Nor having movie supporting people show up now and then. It's a very tenuous connection, and like I said, it's one way. The show will always reference the movies and connect, and claim to be there for this or that, or set up this, or Coulson helped them find the thing, etc. But Tony Stark isn't showing up, and the Inhumans won't rely on the show either.

Someone said to me how neat it would have been to have Fitz or someone have a cameo on the helicarrier. And really, why not do that? They do shout outs to comics that 12 people in the theater get, why not a show shout out? Especially when it's a simple one that people who won't get will still not worry about it. Just another shield person, who cares?

And the reason is that the movies exist in the show universe, but not the other way around. The movie division of MS is ignoring the TV division.

@LexHairFight

I disagree. The avengers explain in the movie why they are after hydra and how they found it doesn't matter. With all the plot flying past you in AOU, no one stopped and wondered how they found that base.

And fury...he has been on helicarriers before, its really not weird for him to show up in one at all. I hadn't seen or read about the AOS episode yet, and didn't care all at all how he got the carrier. In assumed it was the one from Avengers.

"Will Daisy be in the inhumans movie or Infinity Wars, Whedon doesn't know any of that stuff yet."

That's the rub. If the Inhumans movie is being built around the broad outlines that the show has put forward (Kree experiment, obelisks, underground cities, pockets of inhuman communities), then okay. I'll consider the Agents stuff to be suitably canonized.

If Coulson isn't revealed to be alive to the Avengers by the end of Infinity War part 2... then it may as well be a Lost style purgatory dreamscape.

The show frequently stands up on it's own merits, so I don't regret watching it week to week regardless of the MCU integration (or lack). But I totally get where ruadh's coming from.

Also, I can tell you right now, Skye won't be in any of the movies. And Black Bolt etc won't show up on this series. They can't assume people seeing the movies have kept up on the show, and the movies don't acknowledge it anyway.

@Spock0Clock

Thanks! And again, I don't think its wrong to watch or enjoy this show. Obviously it IS connected and that can be a lot of fun. I just don't enjoy that aspect anymore because it only goes in one direction, ad I realized that was the only thing keeping me tuning in anymore.

@soforizo

For me, I started realizing that watching the show was getting more tedious. It was a chore, and something I would out on only when there wasn't anything else on my DVR. Then I started to realize its really not all that connected anyway, and all I was watching for anymore were the MCU connections. So if you like the show, I am sure that stuff is still enjoyable. I don't expect constant link ups, shout outs or even cameos. That isn't the issue for me. I don't like the characters anymore, and realized they don't matter in the universe I do still enjoy. That is all.

Daredevil also has a tenuous link to the MCU. They mention, they have newspaper headlines, etc. That kinda stuff is fun for me the same way AOS used to be. But if that was the only reason I watched Daredevil, I would quit it as well as it's easy to ignore and still enjoy the movies. However, I loved Daredevil. And of course AOS is a totally different show. It's just become something I don't enjoy, and that was reinforced when Whedon made his comments (which i realized, joke or not, are totally accurate), as well as by the quality or Daredevil. And again, totally different show. So I am not comparing genre or tone etc. I don't want AOS to be like Daredevil in those ways...just in quality.

As it stands, it's Marvel's goofy soap opera. And that is fine. Oz was a ridiculous prison soap opera, and I watched that. But AOS lost me, and feels utterly skippable since I know it has absolutely no bearing on the movies and isn't fun anymore.

It would have been so easy to give Patton Oswalt a cameo on the Helicarrier. Just have him walk by in the background, Koenig style - boom! He would've probably even done that for free. :(

My typos are horrendous!

Again, if you like the show and get excited that maybe this person will show up in the movies, or is setting up that movie, I see nothing wrong with that. They definitely have set it up to work that way, but it also is something you can safely skip and never sit in a theater and have missed something. It's intentional. Will Coulson show up in a movie again? I seriously doubt it, but of course I don't really know. The way it works now and is being set up, I will be utterly shocked if he does. Same with Skye and who ever else, as that's just not the nature of the series. Are you an idiot for enjoying the show anyway? Absolutely not.

Kyos, very good point. Would have been very easy, and he didn't even need dialogue.
Bulldawg2014

I appreciate you guys not openly show bashing but if you aren't going to accept that the shows are connected to the movie unless Robert Downey Jr himself sets foot on the show then you are being ridiculous. Supporting characters from the movies are constantly coming and going and all of the major events from the movies are touched on in the show. They can't be constantly referencing the show in the movies because only a subset of the movie audience watches and it would be alienating to film viewers to achieve that level of exchange. Agents of Shield supplied the information that led to the beginning of Age of Ultron and supplied support at the end. That's an extremely high level of integration and is more than has EVER been done before. Before the show came out people were complaining about them being too integrated but now since Joss Whedon made a joke and said he doesn't want to reveal to the avengers that Coulson lives it's suddenly not connected enough.
