DAREDEVIL Actor Charlie Cox Reveals What He Thought Of Ben Affleck's Portrayal Of The Character

When Netflix's Daredevil show dropped it was what fans of the character had always wanted and for many, it still remains the crowning achievement of Marvel's television endeavors. This positive reaction was in part due to the show's high quality but also somewhat due to the last lackluster on-screen interpretation of the character, the 2003 Mark Steven Johnson film.

The film has it's defenders of course, particularly of the directors cut but few can argue the quality is anywhere to the level of the Drew Goddard created Netflix show with Boardwalk Empire star Charlie Cox faring much better under the mask than former Daredevil Ben Affleck.

Speaking at Comicpalooza, Cox was asked about his thoughts on Affleck's portrayal of the Marvel superhero and it turns out that he's a fan.

"Personally, I think... I'm just laughing because I get asked this a lot and sadly I'm going to say the same thing that I've said before. I happen to think Ben Affleck's performance as Daredevil is fantastic. I really like his Matt Murdock... I stole a lot of stuff. So, I think he does a really good job."

In fairness, the film is rarely lambasted for its star's performance alone, even if it did turn the actor off superhero films until his role in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Despite his kind words for the actor though, Cox is with many fans when he revealed that he doesn't care for the film as a whole.

"I don't like the film. The original Daredevil film I don't think that worked particularly well and the reason I don't think it worked particularly well is that what we discovered with the show is that the tone of the character suits a slightly darker, more sinister feel. In my opinion, the best Daredevil comics are the ones that are geared towards a slightly more mature audience and I think that what the show captures is that level of sinister, dark tone, I guess. But I like Ben Affleck's, Matt Murdock."

Netflix's Daredevil has recently finished filming its third season with an expected 2018 release.

What do you think? Were you a fan of Affleck's performance in Daredevil? Are you looking forward to Season 3 of the Netflix show? Leave your thoughts below.

@relentless1 - The uncut version is not that bad. It is slightly closer to the TV Show as it explains a lil bit more about his morality, trust in the system, and religion. Affleck was not the problem, it was everything else. Being a theatrical film with a famous lead actor, they tried to just stuff too much into the film.

@mastakilla39 - ive seen the uncut version and while better than the original my a lot it still dent hold up compared to the great stuff being put out today. Also Affleck was most certainly miscast, he did admirably with what he had but at the end of the day hes more whiny than broody and too cocky as Matt for me to enjoy his performance

Ben Affleck's performance was atrocious which makes it all the more ridiculous he was cast as Batman only to lead that character to failure also!

@Forthas - I don’t think he’s a terrible Batman, but the scripts have really been bad for the movies he’s been in.

@noahthegrand - Yep. He could have been a great Batman (if not the best), but Zack Snyder and co are a load of halfwits.

Ben wasn't bad....the movie itself was atrocious. Colin Farrell was quite good.

@Kevwebsz - Nah, the real star of Daredevil were the CG team that did the echo-vision. While it wasn't always on point, it was the one gimmick that kept the movie from being remembered solely for its soundtrack.

@Spock0Clock - I hated the way they handled his blindness in the fights SO MUCH. The sound cut out in every fight scene to show that DD was blind? Its like they got confused the difference between hearing and sight. I actually thought the DVD was malfunctioning at first. How the heck does the audience not being able to hear anything translate as DD being blind when he has ENHANCED hearing (not to mention all his other senses)? That's some backwards logic there. I've tried to rewatch this movie a few times, but its those fight scenes that make it truly awful.
I do think the casting was pretty spot on, and DD's costume was good - Ben looked the part in that costume. Bullseye's costume design was utter crap though, and he was overacting, which is unusual from Colin Farrel. Garner was an interesting choice, and tbh she's so cute, I'd watch about anything if she's in it. I even thought Kingpin was pretty inspired casting.

I never found Ben Affleck to be an engaging actor, so he was just okay. Collin Farrell's was awful tho

When you don't wanna be mean and bash a movie, you criticize the tone. And Cox has already made it clear that he's not gonna publicly bash a fellow actor's performance, because he's not an idiot. Plus, he made need Affleck to cast him for a role someday!😂 The Daredevil movie had a dark enough tone, the script and direction just kinda sucked. I put Charlie Cox and Stephen Amell in the same category. To me, they're both playing way more serious versions of their characters from the comics. I'd like to see them both loosen up and be less broody.

Affleck's Daredevil costume is far superior. But Cox captures the grittiness of Matt Murdock, really well.

Affleck was fine, Bullseye was terrible. I actually really liked the movie for the most part.

I don't think Affleck was bad in the role, I just think there are times you can tell he's phoning it in, like he must've started to realise while filming that the movie would be a mess and lost interest. I feel like you can kinda see him doing the same at times in Justice League too.

Even so, I have to admit Daredevil was one of my guilty pleasures as my first introduction to the character (alongside his guest appearance in Spider-Man the Animated Series), but since the Netflix show debuted I've had no desire to revisit the movie.
