DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN - New Details On The Punisher's Role And Possible Plans For A Spin-Off Series DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN - New Details On The Punisher's Role And Possible Plans For A Spin-Off Series

There's a huge amount of excitement surrounding Jon Bernthal's upcoming return as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again, and along with news on that series, we have possible details on a spin-off as well.

Daredevil: Born Again is currently being shot in New York City and, if a new rumour is to be believed, Jon Bernthal is back on set filming scenes as The Punisher.

After first showing up as the vigilante in Daredevil season 2, the character would go on to appear in two seasons of his spin-off series. The fact Marvel Studios has plans for Frank Castle is news that's been welcomed by fans and trusted insider @CanWeGetToast has shared some very intriguing intel about a run-in between The Punisher and the NYPD...

Yes, it appears Marvel Studios will indeed address the way The Punisher's logo has been co-opted by certain groups, making it clear that Frank doesn't approve.

The scooper would also go on to suggest that the vigilante will be at the top of The Kingpin's list as he runs for New York City Mayor in an effort to stop superheroes from patrolling the Big Apple's streets. If he's successful, that will have a huge impact on Daredevil, Spider-Man, and many other street-level do-gooders.

It's also being reported that there are plans in place for The Punisher to get his own series on Disney+. We know Marvel Studios plans to focus on quantity over quality moving forward, but could Frank finally get the live-action treatment he deserves?

Netflix's The Punisher was only okay, and with Kevin Feige calling the shots, Bernthal might just end up getting the platform he deserves to bring this character to life on screen.

What do you guys think about these latest MCU rumours?

It boggles my mind that punisher comics specifically, and now the show, have had to react to cops being scum

@Twenty23Three - It didn't have to, all by itself. As if this will stop some people from doing bad things.

Punisher shutting those who use his logo down and bringing up Cap as rolemodel instead is pretty great. Can really her Bernthal's Punisher say that word-for-word.

A Punisher show though? Let's just see how Daredevil and the other shows like Echo do first. There are enough shows to fill the coming three years with already.

@bkmeijer1 - Given the current volume of shows in the pipeline, I don't see a Punisher show happening until 2026 at the soonest, even if stuff like Vision Quest and Nova does end up going the Special Presentation route.

@TUD - This would be a good logo for a new Show.

Criminal America and the influence of The Punisher on American society. I want The Punisher Show to focus on that.

@Repian -

Cap isn't that much of a role model though in that way, in the MCU, on this basis, considering he too went nomad and basically chose to act against human legal concepts. "I'm not looking for forgiveness. And I'm way past asking for permission."

@dagenspear - true. Go against your government and just completely ignoring international law isn't the best signal to give today
dagenspear
dagenspear - 4/3/2023, 5:40 AM
@bkmeijer1 - This is the thing: Some will take sides on that, based on who and why they're doing it. This is why, to me, using superheroes to draw some moral line is a bit off, to me. If they think Frank is wrong for what he does, I think just say so. Don't try and play him as wagging his finger at some who may do what he does, because they're cops.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/3/2023, 6:51 AM
@dagenspear - I kinda agree. Just like with sports though, and even though we liked to pretend it isn't the case, entertainment will always be used as a platform for morals and politics.

That's kinda why I like this anyway. Better this way than giving some speech about doing better.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 4/3/2023, 7:59 AM
@bkmeijer1 - And I can kinda understand that (I think everyone can, whether intentionally or not, inject their worldview into the work they perform, with these things, I just think being more self aware and writing it with, to me, more appropriate nuance not only helps convey the message in a stronger way, but also shows humility, which I think can lend itself better to engaging the lesson with the audience), but using the Punisher of all people to do it is wonky, to me, considering what he does. I support him supporting Captain America and that others should follow his example (as a Christian who believes in doing the right thing regardless of societal standards), but I feel like that should be sole lesson here, not what oath they took, just that he knows he's a bad person and that he thinks no one else should emulate him. I think it could play a lot more in character with that.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/3/2023, 9:08 AM
@dagenspear - guess he does know and he's telling cops they aren't bad guys. Could they've phrased it differently? Probably. But I think it get's the message across
dagenspear
dagenspear - 4/3/2023, 9:58 AM
@bkmeijer1 - If that's their intention, maybe. But I think it's a bit hard to tell, depending..

I honestly don't think it's a good idea for Disney to do a Punisher show. Even if you can make the property the PG-13, the entire point of the character doesn't align with Disney. I'd much rather get NO Punisher than to suffer Disney's compromised mishandling of the character. I got 3 decent seasons of Frank Castle's story of them being great and one being okay. I'm fine with that.
HOTSHOT
HOTSHOT - 4/2/2023, 12:18 PM
@BobGarlen - But Berthenel has said he's not coming back as a watered down version of the character, and we're getting R-Rated content.

Besides, the Punisher TV series already mishandled him by making him into Logan.
BobGarlen
BobGarlen - 4/2/2023, 1:20 PM
@HOTSHOT - I trust Bernthal to advocate for the most accurate version of the character he can. And it's arguable on how the show's first season treated him, the second season did make some missteps.

But I don't trust the corporate entity that is Disney, I have no reason to trust them with a character like Frank. So yeah maybe Jon isn't going to be a watered-down version of the character, but they're probably not going to put him in a position to be very violent in the show, or they'll overtly rely on Daredevil's insistence of no Killing to keep the character leashed in Born Again.

@BobGarlen - Kids shouldn't be on any platform or service without parental supervision. The problem isn't Disney. If kids are watching violence, that's the parent's problem and shouldn't be affecting my consuming of the same content.
TUD
TUD - 4/2/2023, 5:42 PM
@BobGarlen - Well considering the fact the first show was *also* made by Disney (it was produced by ABC Television and then distributed to Netflix), I think you're worrying a bit too much.

@GhostDog - Pretty strong hypocrisy.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 4/2/2023, 9:43 PM
@dagenspear - Frank has never been someone to model yourself after and he’s a known hypocrite too. Like all vigilantes, he is a living oxymoron. The disciplined outlaw, the righteous criminal, the moralistic villain, so on and so forth.

Even he knows it. While there is a sense of justice within him, a portion of that sense of justice is tainted by a desire for violence and conflict. Him facing criminals is perfect because not only it satisfies his sense of right and wrong, but also assures that the supply for what he craves will always be perpetual. A never-ending earthen version of Valhalla.

But he’s also right. Those men took an oath to uphold the law. He didn’t. It's one of the reasons why he hates whenever a new vigilante shows up, especially when inspired by his actions, and it's also one of the reasons why he hates being called a hero. He's not being humble, he's being realistic and honest, because he knows deep down what his true motivations are and why he does what he does.
