DAREDEVIL Star Ayelet Zurer Comments Briefly On Not Returning As Vanessa Fisk For Marvel Studios' BORN AGAIN

Daredevil: Born Again will see Sandrine Holt take over as Vanessa Fisk from Ayelet Zurer, and the Man of Steel star has now addressed her departure from the MCU with some brief comments on Instagram...

We recently learned that Better Call Saul and Mr. Robot star Sandrine Holt will play Vanessa Fisk in Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again.

The news raised some eyebrows as the character was previously portrayed by Man of Steel actress Ayelet Zurer across all three seasons of Netflix's Daredevil. The actress received glowing reviews for her work in the series and many fans are understandably disappointed that she will no longer star as The Kingpin's better half.

Holt is a huge talent, however, and we're sure she'll put an exciting new spin on a woman who has served as both Wilson Fisk's conscience and someone who has often encouraged him to head down some pretty dark paths.

Recently, Zurer took to Instagram to share an article which addressed her Marvel Universe departure, and while she didn't reveal the reason for her absence, she certainly sounds pretty disappointed.

"Sad to not take part," she told her followers. "But I will always be Vincent D'Onofrio’s biggest fan."

As of right now, we don't know whether scheduling issues are to blame or if Marvel Studios made the decision to take this character in a different direction for reasons that have yet to be revealed.

While Daredevil: Born Again is set to be a loose follow-up to the events of Daredevil, it's also essentially a reboot that officially brings the Man Without Fear into the MCU. With that in mind, we don't expect Marvel Studios to be beholden to casting or creative decisions made by Marvel Television, hence why Vanessa being replaced isn't that much of a shocker.

Despite there being plenty of photos and footage online from the New York set of the Disney+ series, Marvel Studios hasn't released an official first look and we don't anticipate getting one for a while yet, unfortunately.

Daredevil: Born Again is still expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2024.

I actually really hate that they’re recasting her, not because her performance was insanely amazing or i loved her character dearly or anything (though she was very good!) but because the Fisk we’ve seen so far was more motivated by his love for her than anything, in his story. It was a really well told part of his character. The fact that they’re scrapping that by recasting tells me it’s not going to be as character driven as before. You don’t just recast the key relationship of a character unless it’s no longer important to their character. That’s a shame to me, it made him so much more empthetic.

@connorblaze -
I mean, it's evident the Daredevil series is going to be bad. They've removed the core aspects of Daredevil and they are repeating the Born Again storyline that Daredevil Season 3 already did a lot better than what we're going to get here. In addition it'll be reliant on people having seen Echo to understand Fisk and Echo is probably the most likely thing to be cancelled.

@Scarilian - The core aspects that made Daredevil great are the character writing and fight scenes. We haven't seen either yet.

They're not repeating the Born Again storyline and this was confirmed ages ago. It's just a title.

MCU property relies on you watching other MCU property? Shocker.

@Scarilian - This is what I've been telling everyone but I keep getting attacked for it.

Marvel just hasn't a great track record when it comes to producing series (I'm talking about quality; I enjoy watching them too)

The bar for Daredevil is just incredibly high

For the longest time, she seemed really familiar but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

But I just realized she's Kal's mom from MOS.

@ComicBookPsycho - Same, and I've seen Man of Steel several times and the DD series twice.

Hers is the first MCU recasting I don’t understand. When Terrance Howard got replaced, I was able to justify it because he’s a weird guy on set and wanted too much money. When Ed Norton got replaced, it’s because he wanted a co-writing credit on The Incredible Hulk, and when Marvel Studios wouldn’t do it, he refused to promote the film. William Hurt got replaced because, well, he died.

But Ayelet seemed to have a great time on Daredevil, and her performance was warmly-received by the fans. I can only assume there were scheduling and/or pay conflicts behind the recasting.

@santoanderson - Well, personally, the first recasting I don't understand was Emma Fuhrmann's as Cassie Lang.

Yeah, I get it, Kathryn Newton is the bigger name and might look more like (the incredible!) Abby Ryder Fortson but the way they handled that whole situation still doesn't sit right with me.

(Fuhrmann found out she was being replaced during Feige's presentation where he announced Quantumania)

The MCU never needed the 'bigger' names; at this point, they make stars (see Ms. Marvel's Iman Vellani)

Newton isn't a box office draw and you can't convince me that Quantumania would have performed better/worse with Fuhrmann.

@santoanderson -Ayelet was a lead in an AMC show called Moonhaven. It was renewed for a second season in June, but that renewal was rescinded December 3 and the show was cancelled. Marvel announced Sandrine Holt's casting on December 5 (she was obviously cast sometime before said announcement), but we didn't actually learn she was playing Vanessa until earlier this month.

Zurer was unavailable to play Vanessa, who is a lead character, but later became available. Unfortunately they had already recast the role.

IMO, Newton looks much less like Forston. When I saw Fuhrmann in Endgame, I thought she was perfectly cast as a believable older Cassie. Newton just seemed like they were like "screw the resemblance, this girl is popular!" Face shape, bone structure, nose, etc, I just don't see any of Forston in her. Nothing against her as an actress though.

Why the [frick] do they keep doing this type of shit? Absolutely no respect for any of their actors or cgi artists, would be a horrible company to work for, never any kind of explanation either. Marvel Studios is petty af. Recasts more than any other media but they pride themselves in continuity.

@Matchesz - Scheduling conflict according to a user above. I wish she was coming back, though.

I read it was a scheduling conflict as to why she was recast but whatever the case the core 3 from that series is back and that’s good enough for me
