All five episodes of Echo are now streaming on Disney+, and like many Marvel Studios TV shows, the finale wraps up perhaps a little too quickly. We're sure you have some big questions after watching it, anyway, so let's take a deep dive into that ending.
Having rejected The Kingpin's offer to rejoin him, Maya Lopez confronts her "uncle" at the Choctaw Powwow. He's planning to take his revenge by killing her people and those closest to her, including Maya's grandmother and cousin (it's never revealed how Wilson Fisk knows about Bonnie).
While Uncle Henry and Biscuits deal with The Kingpin's goons - who planned to kill countless innocents at the Powwow - Maya channels powers passed down by her Choctaw ancestors to stop Fisk in his tracks when he moves in for the kill.
In this instance, she uses her mother's healing powers to try and fix Kingpin's childhood trauma and make him a better man. He largely seems to reject her attempt, though something within him looks to have changed. We'll come back to that.
Maya has access to various abilities (teased throughout those early episodes), making her not quite superhuman but certainly powerful. However, as the series ends, we're left in the dark about what's next for her. The Kingpin appears to give up his quest to bring her back in line or take any sort of revenge, allowing Maya to enjoy a meal with her family.
For the time being, it seems she'll remain at home to reconnect with the family she left behind as a child. Daredevil: Born Again feels like the best possible place to pick back up with her, though a rumoured appearance from the Man Without Fear with Maya returning to New York to become a P.I. never materialises.
It wouldn't have made a great deal of sense to end on that note even if it would have guaranteed Echo a place in the upcoming series. This could be where Maya's story ends and, if so, what a waste. Then again, we all briefly thought Kingpin was done for after Hawkeye!
In a post-credits scene, we catch up with a rattled Kingpin and watch as he tells his assistant to schedule a meeting with his "remaining heads before the situation spirals out of control." He clearly has no intention to give up his criminal enterprise but may have been affected by Maya enough to try and do some good...well, what he considers to be good.
Watching a news report, Kingpin learns that New York wants a Mayoral candidate who can do what's necessary to make them feel safe again and deal with the Big Apple's problems; needless to say, we'd be shocked if that's not referencing vigilantes and superheroes.
The stage is set for Fisk to run for Mayor and, based on what we know about Daredevil: Born Again, he'll be setting out to rid the city of superheroes. That should be good for business and may be enough for 'ol Hornhead to eventually seek help from a certain web-slinger...
