HAWKEYE Star Vincent D'Onofrio Addresses Fan Criticisms About The Kingpin's Enhanced Strength

Vincent D'Onofrio reprised the role of Daredevil villain The Kingpin in Hawkeye's penultimate episode, but Wilson Fisk had definitely undergone some changes since we last saw him. Primarily, he appeared to be considerably stronger, shrugging off being shot with an arrow, getting hit by a car, and a massive explosion. Fisk also threw Kate Bishop around with ease, but she was giving up a lot of size and strength, to be fair.

Some fans have still been critical of what they perceive to be a significant change to the character since his Netflix debut, and D'Onofrio tackled those complaints head-on while talking to ComicBook.com.

"You know I learned recently, a couple of the fans, they were very excited about it, they were commenting about the strength that I have," he started. "Because I'm throwing Kate [Bishop] around and stuff. But, I totally forgot. I just saw a clip on Twitter of me and Charlie [Cox] fighting in [Stephen] DeKnight's first season. Obviously, he's an incredible director. He helped develop the character of Wilson Fisk."

"There's a scene that we shot on an alley, in a street in Brooklyn, where I'm literally throwing Daredevil (Charlie) through the air. Like, I'm picking him up and swinging him 15 feet into a garbage can. I do it a few times in that fight. It's no different, it's really not," D'Onofrio continued. "So, I keep saying that it's the same Fisk that was in Daredevil. It's the same canon, but people get confused about things. I understand."

Everything is a little muddled right now, and only Kevin Feige truly knows what is and isn't canon. As for The Kingpin's apparent upgrade (he did tear a car door from its hinges with ease), that could be explained by him taking the Power Broker's Super Soldier Serum. It would also make the villain surviving his confrontation with Maya Lopez a little more believable.

It hasn't been confirmed, but the expectation is that The Kingpin will return in Disney+'s Echo.

Kingpin's strength level has always bugged me in the comics, so I'm prepared to have it bug me in the movies.

@Spock0Clock -

I used to play D&D with a guy had a character that was basically a 400 LB Mexican Biker who swung 2 sledgehammers. He took the disadvantage of compulsive eating for additional agility so he was as nimble as a ballerina and limber as a gymnast.

Very entertaining to "see" in action. Kingpin is like that.

I didn’t mind his strength. Hell, I would’ve been happy if they made him even stronger. My only criticisms are the costume they gave him (red Hawaiian shirt, white hat) looked a little silly, and 5 minutes after introducing him (officially) to the MCU, they shot him in the face. I know both of my criticisms are comic-accurate, but just because something works in the comic, doesn’t necessarily mean it will work on film.

@santoanderson - Same here, same here. Maybe I don't agree so much regarding his strength, but everything else I fully agree with.

@santoanderson - Vincent came up with the idea

@cyclopsprime - it does set up Echo nicely given that comic history, but I still feel like it came a little too early.

@santoanderson - Agreed, though I actually didn’t mind the shirt (it’s the holidays). But for his first MCU appearance, I would have preferred him to be more menacing and stay in the shadows. He shouldn’t have gone to kill Eleanor himself, that was very dumb.

It's been a while since I watched the finale of Daredevil season 1, but I remember not being too fond of that fight as well. Good thing that it was at the very end and only lasted a few minutes after enjoying the character of Fisk for a whole season, a luxury that the Hawkeye series did not have. And I appreciate the second and third seasons of Daredevil for not going that far in protraying Fisk in combat.

But regardless of that, I really think that the whole enhanced strength thing could potentially work for me if it was put together a bit better, both in terms of photography and practical/digital effects.

@Fares - DeKnight is a hell of a showrunner sometimes but as a director he’s shaky. The final fight was a little cartoony in comparison to the tone of the rest of the show. That was my only gripe

I don't mind the strength really, but him taking an arrow to the chest, a car at full speed and an explosion to the face felt a bit over the top.

Nothing will beat the season 3 fight with Daredevil, Kingpin and Poindexter though

@bkmeijer - At least as far as the arrow goes, I assumed he had some kind of tactical vest on. We know from the Netflix series all his suits were bullet proof, so… I didn’t think to hard about the arrow. As far as the rest, I mean BW and Hawkeye don’t have powers and should be dead from any number of encounters they’ve had. Gotta suspend disbelief a bit with these comic book properties.

Where did the edit button go?! 😩

@Santanaonfire - yeah those are fair points. Have the same critics for them too (Natasha falling down the building in or walking out of the metro station car crash in Budapest in Black Widow really required sone serious suspension of it too)

Kingpin mentioned something about business needing changing after the snap. I took this as a hint that maybe Kingpin sought out some super serum (or some form of enhancement) in order to level the playing field.

Wouldn't negate canon, and it seems like a smart move for someone in Kingpin's position.

Now, I just want Disney to release a "canon" cut of the Daredevil series, with a handful of scenes cut out that call canon into question. Would be a cheap way to reestablish DD in the MCU.

The main criticism I heard was that he went down to easily. Ignoring that he got shot with an arrow, blown up, and shot at point-blank range. But it was easy right
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/7/2022, 3:02 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - that criticism makes no sense. He threw Kate around like a rag doll, took a hit from a hat and an arrow to the chest.

And (he’s alive he’s gotta be) he’s gonna take a bullet to the head and walk; albeit blind.

@BlackBeltJones - precisely my point. They don’t like that girls did it, like he played mercy and lost, dude got blown up and shot, hold on tight and don’t let gooo, DOOONT LET GOOO

The issue is that the comics portray Kingpin as being abnormally large while also being physically athletic. Something that doesn't really translate to reality and make it look believable. Even Spider-Verse's Kingpin looked comically exaggerated.

I've gotten this far into the MCU to suspend disbelief, but it's amusing to have to explain to my non-comics fan friends that Kingpin is that strong in the comics without being enhanced.

Its been all over the place in the comics so why not the movies too? It’s Kingpin, he’s extraordinarily strong as hell sometimes.

knocturnalzen10 - 1/7/2022, 8:35 PM
@BlackBeltJones - at least they didn't show the old school comics where he was agile as well. DD is a top tier fighter and barely manages to squeeze out a win
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/7/2022, 9:17 PM
@knocturnalzen10 - oh yea. I’ve been doing my normal DD modern run re-read and I’ve just reached shadowland and Fisk keeps up with Matt and the Hand with ease in the more contemporary comics.

When Matt is angry enough he beats the living hell out of him though

knocturnalzen10 - 1/12/2022, 3:18 PM
@BlackBeltJones - Matt definitely has a switch and you don't realize it till he goes dark. it's like when Peter loses it , you learn he could've killed most of his rogues very quickly.
