Back when Kate Herron was doing the rounds to promote Loki ahead of its premiere on Disney+, she mentioned some of the movies/shows that influenced the tone of the series, including Blade Runner, Mad Men, and... Teletubbies!
That last one understandably gained a bit of attention, but with the first season of Loki now at an end, fans were confused as to what exactly Herron was referring to.
Now, the director has finally explained what aspect of the classic - and notoriously bizarre - kids' TV series inspired the God of Mischief's solo adventures.
"I haven’t spoken about this yet, but the Teletubbies reference — it was Episode 5," Herron revealed during an interview with ForAllNerds TV. "I wanted The Void to feel like kind of an overgrown garden because it’s like this forgotten place. Essentially, I had pitched the British countryside because it looks a lot like that, but I remember talking to ILM, who we were making the effects with, and they were like, ‘Well, what are you thinking?’ I just couldn’t think, and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, you know what it is? It’s like the Teletubbies, it’s like rolling hills of dystopia, and that’s what we’re going for.’ But it’s not sunny, it’s got this kind of mist. And that’s how the Teletubbies got into the show. Luckily they went with it."
Not exactly a direct nod to the Teletubbies, but then it wasn't like we were actually going to see Tinky Winky and La La running around the TVA.
At any rate, the official Teletubbies Twitter account clearly saw the funny side:
Were you guys keeping an eye out for a Teletubbies reference in Loki, or had you forgotten all about it by the time the show aired?
