Loki is a series that's generated plenty of discussion online on a weekly basis since launching earlier this month, but it's Sylvia Di Martino's female God of Mischief that's really grabbed our attention.
While it's been established that she's an alternate version of Loki, the fact that she's given herself the name "Sylvie" has led to speculation that the character is, in fact, a hybrid of Loki and Enchantress. While it's clear there's more to her story than meets the eye, Loki director Kate Herron has now cleared things up in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.
The filmmaker confirmed that there's "more to be delved into" before hinting that the series has pulled from multiple sources to create this compelling new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"One thing I would say is, like, she's different to the comics. Like, she's a unique character, but obviously, there are things that have been pulled from. I think for her character, she's on the run and she's called Sylvie and she's dyed her hair. The blonde that we associate with Sylvie is played in that sense, but it makes sense for her character within our story. But I would say deeper than that, yeah, there's more to be revealed about her character to come."
Herron would go on to confirm that Sylvie is a Loki variant, meaning there won't be some sort of twist where we learn she's just posing as a female version of the villain.
"The main thing I would say is: Lady Loki in the comics is a very different character to our character, obviously. I love that character and I think she's got a very different journey," Herron said. "But our Sylvie is a female Loki, in that sense - because in episode 1 and 2, they know it's a Loki they're tracking - but I think that's part of the discussion."
The director added that upcoming episodes of Loki will address questions like, "Why does she not like being called Loki? What's her past? Where did she come from?"
There's clearly a lot more to be revealed, but it doesn't sound like we should expect to see the classic Lady Loki - a fully villainous Loki in Sif's body - at any point in this series. That's not necessarily a bad thing because it means she can be saved for a future appearnce, and Sylvie has been great to spend time with so far.
