Marvel has revealed that Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave) has joined the cast of Luke Cage. During her career, the actress has won an impressive four Emmys, a Golden Globe, and even been nominated for an Oscar, and she'll be playing Mariah Dillard in the Netflix series which is set to premire next year. The character is described as a local Harlem politician - and cousin to Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes - who is looking to bring a new era of change to the streets she grew up on.

Her personal life and professional career are thrown into turmoil by both Harlem's newest hero Luke Cage as well as her cousin Cottonmouth's nefarious acts. It sounds like she'll be a good guy then, and Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, had this to say about the show's latest casting addition: "Alfre has an incredible, unique, and intimidating presence on screen that makes her perfect as a leader of the Harlem community. We couldn’t be more excited that an actress as celebrated and talented as Alfre has decided to join us on this adventure."

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city--forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury. Are you guys looking forward to watching Luke Cage?

@quickhook

Yeah, I really hope it carries over to phase 3 for the MCU, the Ava Duvernay news was disappointing

I'm hoping we get F. Gary Gray for Black Panther

I WISH Mack from AOS was cast as Luke Cage and a other actor portrayed Mack instead.... :(

@sjoerdo0 Why? He's boring. Seems like a nice guy, has the physique....but no real stage presence. That COULD be the fault of the bad scripts, bad acting all around, and cheesyness of the show, however.

Deathlok? That sorry ass character on AOS?

@Omarvls the guy who plays Deathlok can't really carry a show imo, I'd rather have blade. If it means deathlok gets an upgraded auit, I'm happy...or a new Deathlok character. There's a few deathloks

No blade?!?!

Surely Marvel will try to replicate the racially sensitive, civic-minded matriarch from the comics.
