MOON KNIGHT Cut References To THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER's Villainous Gorr The God Butcher

Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater has revealed that there were once plans for the Disney+ series to reference Thor: Love and Thunder villain Gorr the God Butcher, with a couple of different ideas discussed.

Moon Knight ended up being a fun ride and a solid introduction for Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley. While there's currently no word on where the character will appear next, Marvel Studios accomplished what it set out to do by adding a major supernatural character to the expanding MCU.

However, one issue many fans have with the Disney+ series is its lack of connective tissue to the wider world Moon Knight inhabits. We've already heard about scrapped plans for a number of cameos, including the Eternals, but we very nearly got a major reference to Thor: Love and Thunder

Talking to The Direct, Moon Knight Head Writer Jeremy Slater confirmed that at various points in time, the series addressed the existence of Gorr the God Butcher either before or after the events of the upcoming movie. "There were different versions of the script where the Gods would sort of talk about, ‘This thing with Gorr the God Butcher just happened, and now we’ve got this new problem.’ And then there were other versions of the script where they sort of talked about, ‘We’re hearing rumors [that] Gods are dying, this is not the right time to get involved.’ Like we tried to have our cake and eat it."

"We knew the general beats of what would happen in Thor: Love and Thunder, so that we wouldn’t be contradicting anything," Slater continued. "But we had versions of the story that sort of teased Gorr’s arrival, and [ones] that were sort of taking place in the aftermath of that movie. Ultimately at some point, Marvel just made the creative decision, ‘You know, we don’t necessarily need this.’"

There are arguments for and against a reference like the one Slater talks about here. Moon Knight definitely would have benefitted from a more noteworthy link to the wider MCU, while teasing Thor: Love and Thunder this way would have generated a lot of excitement among fans. On the other hand, Marvel Studios should be able to introduce new characters without relying on Easter Eggs!

Do you think Moon Knight needed a few more nods to the world it takes place in?

Reminds me of this

@GhostDog - I like to believe the timeline Agents of SHIELD takes place in, is a timeline where the Avengers actually did stop Thanos from snapping around.

If Inhumans is canon to the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, then so should AoS be.

@bkmeijer1 - I think the multiverse just solidifies that everything, if not 616 main universes, is some sort of timeline or another universe.

@GhostDog - true. Even before Infinity War, I just saw AoS as branching of the main timeline at the end of season 4 (because of them time travelling).

Guess right now, it might be better to assume AoS is a seperate timeline from the beginning. Just like Runaways and Cloak & Dagger.

‘We’re hearing rumors [that] Gods are dying, this is not the right time to get involved.’

This would've helped to better solidify why The Ennead didn't hear Khonshu out during the trial. There's some rope given and it seems obvious that the other Gods don't like Khonshu on a personal level. They see him as an unstable being so when he's just going off and yelling with blind rage through Marc without a strong case, they don't wanna hear it. By this point, they discover he's taking advantage of a mentally ill man, he's got no shot of making them see what Harrow really is.

This was one of the shows strengths.

@McMurdo - the “connectivity” of Marvel is a gift and a curse. The gift shows the wider range of the universe. The curse makes you ask questions like “You had two giant gods fist fighting in the desert and why didn’t any other avengers or Eternals show up and at least ask questions”.
It’s ok to have these characters do their own thing and not be so connected at every aspect of the story.

Having seen the trailer with Gorr’s absence I’m even more curious than before about how bale is gonna portray him, like will he go full screaming bale or will he actually have comedic touches like with everything else? Just trying to picture him in that trailer

They engineered a jump to a different timeline in season 4. With the Multiverse everything is cannon.

I love Marvel everything, but without connection to anything else, I found Moon Knight less and less interesting. Moon Knight the actual superhero is barely in it and the character gets his butt kicked all of the time except off screen. His girlfriend was way more kick butt. A reference to literally anything else (Werewolf, Blade, Gorr, Thor, Ghost Rider, the Darkhold, Midnight Suns, or Mephisto) would have been more than worth the ride. Just got cliche and predictable. At least Wandavision spit in fans’ faces with their fake cameo with a wiener joke in the end.
