It was announced that Disney+'s Moon Knight series added May Calamawy, who is best known for Hulu's Ramy, to its cast last January, and details on her role have finally come to light.

There was a lot of speculation that the actress would play Marc Spector's (Oscar Isaac) girlfriend and eventual wife, Marlene Alraune, but that doesn't appear to be the case. A new still featuring Calamawy's character alongside Spector/Steven Grant has found its way online, and the former is listed as "Layla El-Faouly."

As far as we can tell, El-Faouly does not appear in the comics, although there's a chance she could be an amalgam of several different characters, including Alraune.

The show has Cairo 678 director Mohamed Diab behind the camera, and we found out last year that the Disney+ series has also enlisted Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (The Endless, Synchronic) to helm additional episodes. Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy; The Exorcist) will serve as showrunner, and is leading the show's writing team.

Plot details are still under wraps, but the small-screen adaptation is expected to stick pretty close to the basic premise of the comic, with Marc Spector, a highly skilled mercenary who has numerous alter-egos, channelling the power of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu to fight crime in LA.

A recent synopsis stated that "the action-adventure features a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him are distinct characters who appear against a backdrop of Egyptian iconography."

Not complaining or anything, but Marvel seems to love creating brand new supporting characters for their more obscure characters. Jane's "science crew" in the Thor movies, Scott Lang's heist group in Ant-Man and Awkwafina in Shang-Chi, for example.
