Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion was originally supposed to be helmed by Ali Selim and Tom Bezucha, though the latter unexpectedly departed the Disney+ series shortly before production began.
We never got a detailed explanation for the filmmaker's departure from the show, though Selim has put it down to scheduling issues (rather than creative ones). "Well, when I came on, there were two of us," he tells The Playlist. "I was gonna do [Episodes] 4, 5, 6, and my friend, Tom Bezucha, was gonna do 1, 2, 3."
"He and I prepped for a while, but then we got into probably scheduling constraints for him or something, because I think the show got delayed a couple of times. And he had to depart for [Fargo]."
Selim would go on to reveal that, while he was up for the challenge of helming the entirety of Secret Invasion, Bezucha's sudden departure did cause some expected issues behind the scenes. "It was great for me. I think maybe a little ill-timed. His departure was a little ill-timed for Marvel and so, I was part of the scramble to fill those episodes."
"[There were] no complaints from Marvel, so I think they’re happy having one director tell that whole story."
Given the mixed response to Secret Invasion, some fans will no doubt argue that Selim might not have been the right choice to tell this story. We're pretty sure the Honest Trailers team thinks so, anyway, as their latest video holds very little back when it comes to skewering the MCU series.
Taking aim at everything from the AI-generated opening titles to the all-too-familiar story of a washed-up old hero making a comeback, this will do little to help get rid of the negative buzz which surrounds the latest Marvel Studios TV series.
