WHAT IF...? T'CHALLA BECAME A STAR-LORD Features More Black Panthers Than You Think

The second episode of What If...? featured both MCU Black Panther actors Chadwick Boseman and John Kani, but Djimon Hounsou, the voice actor of fanboy Korath, also voiced T'Challa in the BET mini-series.

Episode 2 of What If...? resonated with viewers for several reasons. Obviously, the voice performance by the late Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa Star-Lord is unparalleled, with fans able to experience him as the titular Black Panther one last time.

Still, Boseman wasn't the only actor to play Black Panther in the cast of What If... T'Challa Became A Star-Lord? - and no, we're not referring to John Kani, whose version of T'Chaka was technically the Black Panther at one point in the MCU.

The thespian reprised his role to deliver the gravitas his monologue needed, cementing the emotional punch of this line, however: "T'challa, if you are out there, you're one bright burning light in a night sky of billions, and we will search every last one of them until we find you - on this plane or the next."

anc

The meta-levels of that line are incredible when considering Boseman's passing, and taking his place on the Ancestral Plane. However, there are also meta-levels to the intense fanboying Korath delivers when he meets this version of Star-Lord for the first time, as T'challa is his hero.

In itself, that is wonderful enough as it gives Korath the Pursuer a more amicable personality than two live-action films did. Still, another reason behind the change may lie under the surface.

The actor who voiced Korath and played him in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel is Djimon Hounsou, who previously voiced T'challa in the BET Black Panther mini-series in 2010, less than a decade before Boseman took the reigns - or in this case, the claws.

As you can see in the image above, a lesser-known Black Panther animated motion-comic series aired on BET in 2010 under the Marvel Knights Animation banner.

While Hounsou was already in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and had no chance to experience Wakanda, this is a wonderfully poetic way to bring these two actors together. With Korath praising T'Challa and joining his crew, he ultimately winds up back in Wakanda, speaking with Shuri.

With the last performance from Chadwick Boseman being important and emotional, the meta easter egg between these two T'Challas seems to have gone unnoticed for the most part. So, we wrote it up over on Toonado and thought we'd share it with you guys here as well. Seeing them together in the image below as both Panthers stand side by side, returning home to Wakanda for the first time in years, together, is a great treat for fans.

Did you notice the Black Panther Easter egg in this episode? What do you think about the meta-levels to the relationship between Korath and T'challa in What If...?

Be sure you share them in the comments!

Djimon would have been a great live action Black Panther or at least T'Chaka.

Too bad he was wasted in such a minor role.

At least he is now Shazam The Wizard.

Although he is another guy who would have been a great Martian Manhunter

@dracula - He's a wonderful actor and he went all in with Korath. I'm sure he loved the chance to be able to connect his character to Wakanda in one way or another.

Really surprised I haven't been seeing people point it out tbh.

@dracula - Yep, he was my personal pick for years. Also would have loved to seen him at least be the father. He wouldn't have needed his son to play a younger him. Just put a wig on him and boom, black don't crack.

@dracula - Dude put in two Academy Award nominated performances and Hollywood just started casting him in mediocre bit part roles. The industry needs to wake the [frick] up, this man is leading man material.

Man… I thought that BET show was like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes or Spectacular Spidey when I first saw it. It was definitely not a show for kids lmao

@DaHyro - I agree, and I LOVED it. Luckily I was out of high school by then so it didn't affect me negatively lol.

Here's what I think....Marvel's first movie starred Wesley Snipes...I am white, and guess what???? I loved that movie!!! Damn?:/ too bad Snipes is black...lol... There is this movie about Aliens where a woman is the lead...oh yeah..I loved that also...DAMN that white woman for making a white boy like that!. Privilege...is growing up in the US...You have more opportunity here than any other place in the world! My dad picked shit out of a dumpster to survive..first one in his family to graduate college... I was the second, and wrestled at Northwestern University! I wrestled many different ethnicity and backgrounds...and their were some that judged me as hillbilly trash...yet I graduated in 4 years and proved them wrong. Class is the issue...white, black,Asian, latino, doesn't matter...first wave of immigrants hated one another..and guess what they were all white..PEOPLE NEED COMMON SENSE 😉 but I guess that's long gone...I am done

Djimon should get a bigger role in hollywood again. This man is a fantastic actor.

Recast him in the MCU as someone more prominent, like they did with Gemma Chan.

He'd be really good as Ben Grimm. Strong voice, can add in a level of gravitas for the character.

I thought this episode was brilliant and funny. I really enjoyed Djimon as well as Chadwick. Man, what a loss. I don't want to get into it, but you guys know I'm just pissed off with Marvel not letting someone else take on the role of Tchala. But anyway, let's move on.

Good Episode. Thanos was also fascinating and Yondu. Nice one!!

Korath was funny at first but talk about a running gag, it got on my last stinkin nerve after a short while. What if… Digimonsoon lost his swag?

Since when did coincidences become easter eggs? It's a pretty cool coincidence though.
