The news broke yesterday that X-Men: The Last Stand star Elliot Page has come out as trans, and the actor made it clear in an emotional social media post that his pronouns are now he/him and they/them. Understandably, many people have wondered what that means for his role in Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, in which Page plays the female Vanya Hargreeves.

It's now been confirmed (via Variety) that Vanya will continue to be depicted as female in the small screen comic book adaptation, with the non-binary, transgender Page still in the role.

"Trans actors can and do play both trans and cisgender characters," GLAAD Director of Transgender Media Nick Adams said in a statement to the trade. "I’m sure Elliot will continue to be brilliant in Umbrella Academy and many different types of roles in the future."

It's also been revealed that Netflix is in the process of updating the streaming service so that any roles previously credited to "Ellen Page" will now read "Elliot Page."

The Twitter accounts for both Netflix and The Umbrella Academy also responded to Page:

I thought they'd just transition the character too. That honestly fits in quite nicely with the character and the show's progressive writing I think. I don't mean that in a bad way.

It's not right that a man is taking a role that should go to a woman. So typical of our country.

So Elliot Page, a trans man, can play a female character, but Scarlet Johansson can't play a trans character? I'm not saying Elliot shouldn't be able to play a female character, I'm saying they should both be able to play the roles

@CaptainScotland - Hollywood and Twitter. The pits of fake outrage and hypocrisy

Well, who thought it would develop differently? Money talks, after all.

Good for him, great character and great performance. Some of the comments on here are cringey as hell. For fans of a show that is all about acceptance, you sure are a bigoted bunch.

It's different because he played that character before his transition.

Good for him!

In response to Captain Scotland, I think the whole point was that trans actors are extremely underepresented in the 'Hollywood', not for a lack of opportunity or skill but they just aren't offered the roles. Elliot is extremely fortunate to have an established career before making the switch to Elliot officially in public. I'm sure having those who play trans that aren't trans might feel like a kick in the nuts (metaphorically) whenthere are plenty capable trans actors out there. If the playing field were a little bit more even, there would be less of an issue of ScarJo playing a trans character.

Just remember, white men, for different reasons throughout history, including in 'Hollywood' have played homosexuals, women, and people of color before it was acceptable for them to have roles, or in the case of homosexuals, openly.

Eventually the time will come for ScarJo, but now just doesn't feel like it's the right time.

Fair, he should keep playing the part. I'm generally not a fan when a straight person isn't "allowed" to play a gay person because of some reason. The best actor should get the part, that simple.

In that vein it's perfectly logical that Elliot keeps playing the character

Don’t get me wrong, good for him👍🏻 And I can’t exactly say I’m surprised, he was giving off a very masculine vibe both seasons I felt. And that’s cool. But I’m not an expert, so bear with me... So is she going to have gender reassignment surgery and transition fully? And is it really a normal thing to go back and change all her credits to Elliot? Isn’t that just rewriting your past? I get people want to be who they are, and [frick]in A to that, but you can’t just pretend your were the person you are now in the past. That’s just ignoring reality. Isn’t it?
