AHSOKA Brings Two KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC Characters Into The Disney-Era STAR WARS Canon

Ahsoka is opening up the Star Wars Galaxy in a myriad of exciting new ways, and the premiere actually brought two characters from Knights of the Old Republic into the current Disney-era Star Wars canon.

Dave Filoni is using Ahsoka to take a deep dive into the Star Wars franchise's lore, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that the second episode - "Toil and Trouble" - referenced two key characters from the Knights of the Old Republic video games.

As we first revealed on SFFGazette.com, the first nod comes when we follow Ahsoka Tano and Hera Syndulla to the shipyards on Corellia where they're tracking down an HK-47 assassin droid. In both Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel, The Sith Lords, that same model was part of Ebon Hawk's crew.

Right at the end of the episode, Morgan Elsbeth finishes assembling a giant hyperdrive ring she's named "The Eye of Scion," with that choice of moniker likely a nod to The Sith Lord antagonist, Darth Sion.

He lived in the time of the Old Sith Wars and fought for Exar Kun's Sith Empire until the day he was struck down. Rather than die, though, Sion found that by calling on his pain, anger, and hatred, he could rise from certain death and achieve immortality, at the cost of all-consuming agony.

Seeing as Elsbeth has now confirmed her connection to the Witches of Dathomir, we perhaps shouldn't be surprised that she's inspired by a Sith Lord. The fact he resurrected himself may well tie into rumours we've heard about undead Stormtroopers too.

On another note, the Ahsoka premiere also introduces a live-action version of Governor Ryder Azadi (you can read more about that by clicking here). However, you might have missed Jai Kell, played by Vinny Thomas in Ahsoka and voiced by Dante Basco in Star Wars Rebels

Now a Senator, he first met Ezra Bridger while attending the Academy for Young Imperials on Lothal. Freed by the young Jedi, he eventually joined Azadi's Lothal resistance group and frequently fought alongside the Ghost crew.

The first two episodes of Ahsoka are now streaming on Disney+. You can check out our review here

So sick. Love KOTOR characters.

Also, what happened to that other cadet that Ezra met at the academy? The one looking for his sister. That story went absolutely nowhere. Silly Dave Filoni.

@JFerguson - I was hoping we'd actually see the HK Droid, but we didn't. So that sucks.

But I think the Eye of Sion might be a reach. It also be SCION that they are saying. Because I don't remember Darth Sion having anything special with his eye. So I'm not sure why they would name something like this after him.

Darth Nihilus was always the one I wanted to see in live action.

What's with Disney and non sensical map plots for star wars?

The episode 9 dagger/deathstar/palpatine map stuff was completely stupid.

And now we have another weird coded ancient map that apparently points to the location another bad dude.

How does that make any kind of sense???

@Usernametaken - And what's with treasure maps, anyway? X marks the spot? Has anyone actually found treasure on one of those X's? It would have to be a really detailed map. But it never looks detailed in the movies. It's always an X on a picture of a hand drawn picture of a continent or island somewhere. As if anyone would be able to find the exact place its buried from that.

@CorndogBurglar - that's totally different.

But I guess you're trying to mock my point.

My point is that nothing is explained properly. It's just "we heard that this map could lead to thrawn".

That's just lazy writing, and it wouldn't have been hard to come up with something better, or to present it in a better way.

@Usernametaken - Well, let’s look at pre-Disney Star Wars history, shall we…

Ep 4 - Save a Princess, blow up the Death Star
Ep 5 - Escape the empire, save your friends
Ep 6 - Save your friends, blow up the Death Star

I know we all like to look back at the originals and now apparently even the prequels with rose coloured glasses, but if you take them off, you’ll realise they weren’t any less basic than whatever Disney’s done, and arguably more so.

@PlusUltra - that's not my point.

Those stories were simple to follow and understand.

Ashoka is also a very simple story, but that's not what I was complaining about.

My gripe is that it is just poorly explained, they don't care about telling you the relevant parts that happened before and use a bad plot device of the map to take the story forward.

As imperfect EP 1 through 6 were, you don't end those watching those movies thinking "wtf, that didn't make sense at all"

The credibility of a story depends of the context and rules you set up. But it's not an excuse for nonsensical plots.

@Usernametaken - I wasn't mocking your point. I was adding to it. The idea of a treasure map is ridiculous. And so are these maps in Star Wars.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 8/25/2023, 7:25 AM
@Usernametaken - They provided any relevant backstory in the crawl, like Star Wars always has.

”The EVIL GALACTIC EMPIRE has fallen
and a NEW REPUBLIC has risen to take its place.
However, sinister agents are already at work
to undermine the fragile peace.

A plot is underway to find the lost
IMPERIAL GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN and
bring him out of exile. Once presumed dead,
rumors are spreading of Thrawn’s return which
would galvanize the IMPERIAL REMNANTS
and start another war

Former Jedi Knight AHSOKA TANO captured
one of Thrawn’s allies and leaned of a
secret map which is vital to the enemy’s plan.
Ahsoka now searches for the map as her prisoner,
MORGAN ELSBETH, is transported to the
New Republic for trial …”

@CorndogBurglar - oh, alright. Well, I'm not that much against a map that points to an object or place that did not move.

Although The Uncharted movie was completely stupid.

The problem here for Ashoka is that they use an ancient map to a place to say "this is where that person is" without taking the time to explain the connection between both.

@PlusUltra - it's an overcomplicated and poorly written crawl IMO.

Too much info, you have to expect that people are familiar with all these characters to be able to follow.

I honestly watched the show without rewatching the Ashoka mandalorian episode, or watching any of the animes or reading any article explaining what I should know.

And trust me, if you watch the TV show this way (as will most people), that whole map thing is poorly explained.

But it's a usual problem now with Star Wars and Marvel, they don't understand that each series or movies needs to stands on its own.

Thank [frick] for writers like Tony Gilroy though, at least one person working there gets it.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/25/2023, 7:59 AM
@Usernametaken - I agree. But it's kind of a suspension of disbelief thing for me. So far I think Ahsoka has been pretty good. Definitely better than Boba Fett, Obi Wan, and Mando S3.

If they can keep it up then I can overlook the whole map McGuffin.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 8/25/2023, 8:11 AM
@Usernametaken - It’s no less complicated than the original.

“It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, and space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy”

All relevant backstory is provided. If you want more context, watch Rebels, but it isn’t anymore necessary anymore than the prequels were for Episode IV. 🤷‍♂️

@CorndogBurglar - I agree, it's a way better show than Boba obi wan and mando S3.

I like the characters, the action and the settings.

It could be better written, and there are a lot of plot holes, but it's still very enjoyable.

I just wish Disney understood that you can keep treating everything as a sequel because it's in the same universe. If a new viewer is lost, then the storytelling failed.

At least it doesn't ruin any established characters, and I think that should be the entire lesson for Disney: "stop using OT characters to tell a completely different story than the one they were built for"

Usernametaken - 8/25/2023, 8:15 AM
@PlusUltra - I'm going to disagree with that.

It's very simple to follow:
First paragraph introduce the overall situation.
Second one introduce the plot.
Third one introduce the first main character and the scene that follows.

Also, you don't need the crawl to understand thee movie, there is no vital information as everything in the crawl is repeated or better explained in the movie.

It is just here to set the mood of the film.

@Usernametaken - the tv show is only 2 episodes in so it could always be explained later in the show?
noahthegrand
noahthegrand - 8/25/2023, 8:48 AM
@Usernametaken - if you tell me a map will lead to something I kind of just suspend my disbelief. I don’t think it’s that deep and if it is it will probably be explained later when it becomes relevant
Usernametaken
Usernametaken - 8/25/2023, 9:32 AM
@noahthegrand - not when almost every scenes is about the map.

Like I always say, a tv show is not a 6hour movie.
The map is not the interesting part of this story, it's just a plot device to move the story further.

It would have been easy and quick to explain things properly right from the start, and let the story be about the characters and the journey, and not the mystery map.

@Usernametaken - Love that you pointed these things out. Most will go unnoticed because generally speaking if you love Rebels then you will love this despite its subpar script. Dave Filoni wrote this show like he would for a animated show but its not. His writing should be a step above for a non-animated series.

@BlackStar25 - I wish it would be only Filoni.
I have a general feeling that Hollywood are getting too complacent with their writing.

There is no taking a step back and trying to take your own work apart and see if it still holds.

Filoni might be one of the worst because he's just too much of a fan of Star Wars.

He's ok for doing kid's animated shows, but for a live show with that kind of costs, the writing should be of much higher quality.

So instead of HK's and star maps you went for HK's and... a vague stretch because Sion and scion are similar...
Anyway.
