AHSOKA Showrunner Dave Filoni Teases Season 2 Plans And Addresses Baylan Skoll/Mortis Gods Backlash

Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni has dropped a few more hints about a possible season 2 and his wider Star Wars plans. He also justifies that largely cryptic Baylan Skoll/Mortis Gods tease in the finale...

Ahsoka wrapped up on an open-ended note, and while it's certainly possible it could lead directly into Dave Filoni's planned Heir to the Empire movie, a second season feels essential before that arrives in theaters.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com), the filmmaker - who was recently named Lucasfilm's new chief creative officer - played coy when asked about season 2 plans, but said he knew from the start where the story "should end up."

"I’ve set up several threads that can continue, but if not, I feel like, well, at least I got Ezra home, and that was really important," Filoni adds. "But there’s always a plan. I hope one day we’ll see it. It could be very cool, but it took a while to get [Ahsoka] done, so you never know." Channelling his inner Yoda, he later said, "Always in motion is the future."

One of the ways Filoni laid the groundwork for future stories was by showing Baylan Skoll travelling across Peridea to track down a mysterious source of power. When we last saw him, the former Jedi was looking at a beacon in the distance while standing atop massive statues of the Mortis Gods.

Fans of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels appreciated the tease, but for everyone else, it didn't mean a whole lot. In fact, most viewers were left disappointed that a pivotal villain got just a single scene in the finale for a scene which to them, at least, didn't carry much meaning.

To that, Filoni responds, "People that have never seen Clone Wars will have no idea what that is. For me, that’s okay as long as you understand that those are monolithic figures, and it means something. That’s the power of that image. This person has found this massive-scale sculpture that’s unlikely anything we’ve seen on that planet up to that point. The question you’re supposed to ask is: What does that mean?"

"As a kid, I watched A New Hope and heard about the Clone Wars and the Jedi knights," he continues. "I didn’t know what any of that was, but it didn’t take away from it for me. It just made me feel like there was a sense of history and depth to the storytelling. So, that’s what I was trying to do there."

It's a fair comparison, and we're now going to have to wait and see how these dangling plot threads are addressed and what they'll mean to the wider Star Wars franchise moving forward.

With Filoni essentially in charge of everything, we're bound to see a greater level of connectivity between projects and he'll likely have the sort of sway to ensure something like Ahsoka season 2 does eventually become a reality.

Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for all the latest Ahsoka updates.

Star Wars can be saved but...

Maybe I’ll check this show out some day. But I haven’t watched the cartoons and feel confident that I won’t get as much out of it as someone who has.

@mountainman - honestly your better off watching Clone Wars and Rebels. There's far more characterization in those shows. He choked with Ahsoka. It was solid until ep 6 then the villain enters and everyone becomes incredibly stupid.

@McMurdo - I’ve tried but they are too childish for my tastes. I’m going to wait a few years until my daughter is old enough to enjoy them and watch them with her.

@mountainman - the early seasons are childish it gets better and darker as both go on tho.

Filoni is the rightful heir of Star Wars.

@Drace24 - But will still work side by side with Kathleen Kennedy.

@marvel72 - You're right. He should do it like the "real fans" and be a big baby and throw tantrums instead of sitting next to the yucky girl and her cooties.

@Drace24 - What? Kathleen Kennedy is why Star Wars shit, she's in charge. He'll just be her lap dog and when shit goes wrong he'll be the fall guy.

@marvel72 - Thanks, I'm familiar with the preferred narrative of immature chronically online internet ghouls who picked her as the latest Star Wars bogeyman like so many before her. The reality however is that Kathleen Kennedy is not leading a franchise, she is leading a company. She doesn't write, direct or make any creative decisions in Star Wars, she hires the people who hire the people who do that. She makes phone calls and does paperwork. That's how this stuff works in grown-up world, buddy. And her promoting a talent like Dave Filoni into the highest position a creative can have at LucasFilm is definitely the right one.

It was a nice nod to the animated series.

...is filoni really comparing the mention of clone wars in a new hope to his tease of a villain his whole show was setting up?

That mention of the clone wars was just some world building lucas left in there to explore later. It had nothing to do with the story being told or expanding on in the sequels.

The mortis gods are important. It's literally the reason the villains were doing what they were doing.

Morris trilogy was one of the weirdest episodes of Clone Wars but also some of their most interesting. I wouldn’t mind seeing the concept explored more.

Ahsoka was meh, I mean when compared to Rebels or Clone wars definitely. Nothing really happened, the whole season was a set up, and basically ended up in the same place by the finale lol. I think now that Feloni has total control, he can sprinkle the seeds where needed, and shows like this won't be full of exposition

I'm generally glad Filoni is taking over. I like the Clone Wars/Rebels characters but the writing needs work. He's spent too long writing for 5 year olds. Ahsoka's drama lacks complexity and impact.

Sabine endangers the galaxy to save her friend who has been living on a bleak planet with turtles in close proximity to powerful evil people for ten years. Sabine shows up and says wassup Ezra and he say wassup back. What?!? Shouldn't Ezra be far more of a paranoid headcase? Shouldn't he be angry Sabine gave the bad guys a way back and invalidated his sacrifice?

Shouldn't Ahsoka be angry at Sabine or show some kind of emotion at all? And the dialogue, ugh. Filoni needs a writing staff to give him some help.

Had no idea there was backlash, but I guess he has a good counterpoint. It did look like Baylon found what he was looking for, so I don't really need to see that thread continue.

As for those other threads, I do hope he picks up on them. Ahsoka just left things too open-ended for there not be a season 2 between now and the movie.

"As a kid, I watched A New Hope and heard about the Clone Wars and the Jedi knights," he continues. "I didn’t know what any of that was, but it didn’t take away from it for me. It just made me feel like there was a sense of history and depth to the storytelling."

This is what I think about every time someone calls out "plot holes" when what they mean is "I didn't know what was going on." Some mystery is not just acceptable in sci fi and fantasy, but honestly should be expected.

its clear this site is forever bogged down in negativity and toxicity. does anyone know of any brighter corners of the nerd news and rumors. i watch new rock stars and they are pretty positive and constructive when it comes to disappointment in projects. somehow just reading these comments and i would be led to believe the clone wars was the worse thing to happen to star wars. when i know it was a massive success. that's just how cesspool it gets on this site sometimes. i need more happy nerd energy.

@supermanrex - Literally made an account to make this recommendation, as it seems the same off-putting, overbearing negativity that claims other corners of Star Wars fandom is present here as well. It's not exactly what you requested (they generally don't follow the latest news or shows, though their Andor episodes are excellent) but A More Civilized Age is a great podcast that's been going through the Prequel era (including the first six seasons of Clone Wars), among other SW movies/games/etc. They are willing to critique what they're watching/playing (including from a left-wing perspective) but they don't forget to have enjoy themselves or deny the reality that Stars Wars is a fun action-adventure series primarily made for children.
