While "Expanded Universe" stories originally claimed that Boba Fett blasted his way out of the Sarlacc Pit thanks to his trusty jetpack, today's premiere of The Book of Boba Fett reveals what happened in the official canon. Waking up to discover that he's slowly being digested by the ancient beast, the panicked bounty hunter pulls himself towards a dead Stormtrooper and uses a tube connected to the downed soldier's helmet to get some air.
With that, Fett tears a hole in the Sarlacc's stomach and uses his flamethrower to break out, ultimately clawing through the sands of Tatooine and emerging nearby. He literally drags himself out of the grave, but falls unconscious. Hours later, Jawas appear and steal his armour, leaving him easy prey for Tusken Raiders who later decide to take the bounty hunter captive.
Fett spends a fair bit of time trying and failing to escape, but ultimately appears to earn their trust after slaying a massive beast and saving the life of one of their younglings. It's also clear now that escaping the Sarlacc left lasting damage on the bounty hunter that's only just now beginning to be repaired.
That's all we get in this episode, and future chapters of The Book of Boba Fett will no doubt continue to expand on what happened in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi. After all, by the time we met him again in The Mandalorian, it did look like he'd become quite comfortable living among the Sand People.
What prompted Fett to leave them and retrieve his armour (along with his first meeting with Fennec Shand) will need to be addressed in some way, and we're expecting to learn more moving forward.
The first episode of The Book of Boba Fett is now streaming on Disney+.
