STAR WARS: Ian McDiarmid Confirms He Will Return As Emperor Palpatine In Upcoming Disney+ TV Series

He's been hinting at this for a while, and there have been a fair few rumours to boot, but Ian McDiarmid has finally confirmed that he will return as Emperor Palpatine in an upcoming Disney+ TV series...

In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine rose from the dead when we learned that he had spent decades in a frail clone body plotting his return to power. Ultimately bested by Rey and Ben Solo, the villain's story finally appears to have ended, but that doesn't mean we've seen the last of him.

Talking during a panel at the Imperial Commissary Collectors Convention (via SFFGazette.com), actor Ian McDiarmid confirmed that he reprised the role for an upcoming Disney+ TV series.

"There’s a certain show coming soon set right around the time I may have considered to be very active," the actor teased, dropping quite the bombshell. "Whether or not you will see my physical body, I cannot comment on. But you will certainly feel my presence."

So, it doesn't sound like we'll necessarily see him as Palpatine, meaning this could be a voice cameo or something along those lines (unless he was just playing deliberately coy on a physical appearance). Either way, it seems highly likely that McDiarmid was talking about Obi-Wan Kenobi, especially as that series features Darth Vader and takes place at the height of the Emperor's power.

Andor is another possibility given its setting, of course, though with The Mandalorian teasing Moff Gideon's apparent role in cloning Palpatine, there's every chance he'll show up in season 3.

We're excited to find out, especially as more Palpatine would be no bad thing. The villain was handled poorly in The Rise of Skywalker, and could definitely do with being fleshed out the way he was in Star Wars Rebels. Hopefully, we'll have more concrete details to share with you soon.

In the meantime, keep checking SFFGazette.com for updates.

@BigBoiJoe - I'm Scottish, and you are right, currently, Scotland is part of Britain. But when most people say British they really mean English, the two terms tend to be interchangeable.

Enough of him

He was probably the biggest problem with ROS

@dracula - Just curious why is that? In all honesty for me he was the main reason I cared about watching the movie after last Jedi, yes I know it was un-original and nothing new but the idea of him transferring into a clone body was widely accepted in the old EU

@r4dagast - I think you answered you’re own question: unoriginal and nothing new. And while the Last Jedi was something new, it wasn’t good in my opinion

@r4dagast - The Emperor's return is actually widely considered to be one of the worst things to happen in the old EU. Just because it happened then doesn't mean it should now. That's like wanting Luke's clone, Luuke, to make an appearance

@r4dagast - The Last Jedi ended with Kylo seemingly established as the true big bad of the sequel trilogy, which would have been more interesting and different in this series, but it was all flushed down the toilet in order to play things safe and to pander to fanboy nostalgia.

If Palpatine didn't become Rey's kill in Rise Of Skywalker, I might care.

I know we won't get this but seeing Palpatine train Vader in lightsaber combat would be really cool. Another way for Palpatine to make Vader think twice on overthrowing him.

I hope we get more than a voice cameo. Dude probably needs little to no makeup for the role these days.

Everyone thinking this for Obi-Wan, but a rumor was posted right here on this very site that he may be featured in Andor.

It’ll be Andor because, and I say this as a huge Star Wars fan, I have no interest in that show - and they need to drum up interest for it.

So yeah it’ll be Andor.

@kg8817 - that makes the most sense, I’d imagine they’ll have to do a lot of work to try and make anyone care about that show
