THE MANDALORIAN: Dave Filoni Suggests That The Show Might Be Set Before The STAR WARS REBELS Finale

The Mandalorian takes place after Rebels... right? Well, in a new interview, Dave Filoni addresses that Thrawn tease by suggesting that the show may be set before the events of his series finale...

This past Friday's episode of The Mandalorian was jam-packed with big reveals and teases for what's to come on the Disney+ series, with one name-drop in particular catching the attention of Star Wars Rebels fans.

After Ahsoka Tano disarms Morgan Elsbeth, she mentions the Magistrate's "master" Grand Admiral Thrawn, which obviously suggests that we will see the blue-skinned villain's live-action debut at some point - though that might not play out the way fans will be expecting.

During today's interview with Vanity Fair, Dave Filoni mentioned Tano's "larger mission," seemingly referencing Ahsoka joining forces with Sabine Wren to track down Thrawn and Ezra Bridger in the Star Wars Rebels season finale. However, things might not be that simple!

In an addendum to the VF piece, Filoni was asked about that Rebels epilogue and how it relates to what we saw in "The Jedi," and he gave a very interesting response.

"It's an interesting one… That's not necessarily chronological. I think the thing that people will most not understand is they want to go in a linear fashion, but as I learned as a kid, nothing in Star Wars really works in a linear fashion. You do [Episodes] Four, Five and Six and then One, Two, and Three. So in the vein of that history, when you look at the epilogue of Rebels you don't really know how much time has passed. So, it's possible that the story I'm telling in The Mandalorian actually takes place prior to that. Possible. I'm saying it's possible."

It may be possible, but is it likely? We reckon Filoni may simply be attempting to throw fans off the scent here, but that obviously remains to be seen.

What do you guys make of Filoni's comments? Drop us a comment in the usual place.

That makes no sense, Thrawn isn’t exactly hard to locate in Rebels. Any sizeable rebel movement would have drawn his attention and presence

@DarthLaney - I think he means that just the epilogue could be set after Mandalorian... which still doesn't make a lot of sense. That means that Ahsoka and Sabine would only go searching for Ezra after everything we've seen so far on Mando.

What?

So the show could technically be a Star Wars Prequel? Probably not the best idea…

@santoanderson - Wait how? It's still set after the OT so it's not a prequel.

I have the idea Filoni always talks in a way that he tells the truth, but just the right amount. Nor is he a stranger to recreating a scene, so I can see this epilogue in live-action too.

I wonder if we'll see Thrawn in another show or this one though. My guess is in season 5 and 6 of The Mandalorian.

Okay... So, I know everybody has been theorizing about who the Child may contact from the Jedi Temple, and the two obvious choices are Ezra and Luke. And I know it's reasonable to think it could all be a head-fake and he may decide to just stay with Din Djarin (possibly with his own adorable set of beskar armor forged from the spear). All fine and good.

I've not followed the comment sections religiously, but I haven't noticed anybody offer this possibility (and it's one that got me excited when I thought of it). What if he reaches out and gets an answer from Mara Jade?

And since so many of us are already Stancasting Luke, the prospect of having Mara show up is obviously ripe with possibility.

(On topic, I'm still only a few episodes into Rebels' fourth season, so I honestly don't know how things shake out.)

@Spock0Clock - I think he stays with Mando. He’s kind of the DNA of the show now. But I think he will reach out to someone. Best candidates as Luke and Ezra with the long shot being a survived Mac Windu.

@MrDandy - I really wouldn't mind Sebastian Stan as a young Luke. Maybe sprinkle in a Mark Hamill vocal performance and digitally join both performances into one to sell fans on it.

Ezra is the best shot though. Kinda figured Ashoka's line alluded to him seeking out the child rather than Luke.

“The story I’m telling...”

Whoops. Not I not we. Pretty clear this season who has been in the drivers seat though.

But Rebels takes place before episode IV and Mando is set after VI 🤨

@Spidey91 - he’s talking about the Rebels epilogue which takes place after episode 6.

@MrDandy - well, that makes more sense. and if that's the case, we may get not only Ezra and Thrawn, but also Sabine.

Dave’s just giving himself breathing room so people aren’t like “where’s Sabine?”

Rebels obviously came before episode IV, but the epilogue where we see Ahsoka and Sabine take off could be set after her appearance in The Mando. Or before. Or during who the heck knows. This way he’s not boxed in. Maybe in future episodes she’ll get confirmation that Thrawn is out there and Ezra is alive and that’s why she recruits Sabine. Or maybe her and Sabine have been looking and just on different paths.

Regardless, I hope we see a live action Sabine. I’d love Ahsoka to get her own series and set that looking for Ezra.

Guess it makes sense, its not like the empire gets brought down, then Sabine realizes she needs to find Ezra. Could have spent a few more years on lothal
