Following the release of the first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance, star Tom Hardy took part in an interview with Forbes, and the actor had some interesting things to say about Sony Pictures' "SSU" and the fact that Spider-Man has yet to show up in the franchise.
Hardy began by sharing his excitement for what is being marketed as the final solo Venom movie.
“This one - I’m so, so excited about because we’ve gone much bigger. Kelly [Marcel] and I have been working with Tom Rothman and Sanford [Panitch] and their Sony team for 7-8 years now. We started off - like, initially, [Venom] was just Eddie Brock and nobody knew what we were going to do. Then the second [film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage] - we wrote the second one, we pitched it, got to direct it, put the team together on that - that was huge! That was a huge university of learning.”
The actor went on to comment on how the movies have been perceived, in part due to the lack of a certain Friendly Neighbourhood Wall-Crawler.
"People were going to judge us, you know? Marvel Universe under [Kevin] Feige’s management is doing so well. Spider-Man has gone to Feige’s camp at Marvel. We have one [at Sony]! To me and Kelly, it’s so important to pour in everything that we can to build on that opportunity. So by the third one now, Kelly is directing it, she’s writing - I’m attached to it at the hip and shoulder, like whatever you need, we’ll figure it out.”
Does "one" refer to a camp or Spider-Man? We're not too sure, but the Internet has run with the latter. Could this mean that The SSU will eventually introduce Andrew Garfield's take on Peter Parker? Previous rumors have claimed that this was once the plan for Madame Web prior to a major overhaul of the script.
Or, is he implying that Venom is the Spider-Man of the SSU? This would suggest that Hardy plans on sticking around as Eddie Brock for a while longer, even if The Last Dance is the final instalment in this trilogy.
The article also notes that The Last Dance "could possibly" receive an R rating. Hardy doesn't confirm anything, but does say that they were allowed to "push it" with this third film.
“By the third one, we’ve been given so much creative support to do - to push it. It’s a much wider piece and there’s much more love - not that there was not love in the last ones. We’ve been allowed to put more of our ideas into it and I’m really excited to see how they land.”
What do you think Hardy meant? Drop us a comment down below.
“Eddie and Venom are on the run," reads the synopsis. "Hunted by both their worlds and with net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtain down on Venom and Eddie’s last day”
