Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may be arriving in September, according to voice actor Tony Todd. Responding to a fan on social media, Todd, who voices Venom in the upcoming game, offered the September launch window which he based on planned marketing for the blockbuster video game.
"Massive publicity coming in August," he wrote. "Commercials start dropping in August so I'm told. Hold on to your ... and hold breath! Gonna be necessary."
Although a release date for the highly anticipated sequel has not been officially announced, a September launch window does align with the game's previous "Fall 2023" timeline that Sony issued last December.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 figures to be Sony's big holiday blockbuster for the PlayStation 5 so a September release date would make sense. Not that Sony necessarily needs the holiday shopping season to sell copies of one of the year's most anticipated games.
A sequel to 2018's superhero action adventure, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 continues the journey of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Although specific plot details have not been shared, developer Insomniac Games hopes to deliver "a compelling human story, one full of heart and humor that dives deep into the people behind the mask."
Peter Parker was the main star of the 2018 game, but Miles Morales eventually starred in his own standalone game that was released alongside the PlayStation 5 in 2020. Both Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter are reprising their roles as Peter and Miles, respectively. Joining them is newcomer Tony Todd (Candyman) as the voice of the symbiote-fueled Venom, one of Spider-Man's most iconic foes.
The initial teaser for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 seemed to paint Venom as the game's main villain, but Insomniac Games will almost certainly have some surprises up their sleeves. Although Venom has traditionally been linked to Eddie Brock in most adaptations, Insomniac Games could be going the route of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, in which Harry Osborn becomes Venom. The post-credit scenes for both Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales have strongly indicated that Parker's childhood friend has come in contact with the Venom symbiote.
As we're rapidly approaching the end of March now, it hopefully won't be too much longer before Sony or Insomniac Games offer an update on Marvel's Spider-Man 2. It's possible we could get some sort of official announcement in the coming weeks or this summer at the latest. When Marvel's Spider-Man 2 does arrive, it will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5.
