Remember that bully in school who used to think he was tough because he’d regularly beat up the kids in your D&D club? That same kid who used to take your milk money and give you wedgies for the sheer pleasure of it?

Barring an amazing growth spurt, or a lot of time at the local martial arts club or gym, you were left to dream of the day that you would be getting back at him… Until now! NCsoft has released their new City of Heroes Architect Edition that allows users to create and publish their own missions. Not only can you turn that bully into a virtual Jaba The Hut and take your long-awaited for revenge upon him, other CoH players can enjoy kicking the crap out of him too!

The Mission Architect lets you create missions that you can test privately and then publish online for others to play. This focus on player-created content is just the thing that City of Heroes needed, especially with Champions Online and DC Universe Online in the works for the superhero MMO subgenre. The Mission Architect is shaping up to be one of the most exciting additions to an MMO in quite a while.

You can customize almost everything, including the environment and objectives, types of enemies and their scripting, and the list goes on. Although it sounds quite complicated, NCsoft has managed to keep everything within three screens that make creating a mission from scratch much easier than you would expect. You can actually get a complete mission done in under five minutes… Although it won’t be as robust or immersive as those missions that hardcore players spend hours upon hours building, writing dialogue, creating intricate plots, etc, but the fact that they’ve made it so simple is amazing.

Unfortunately there’s no way to create a new layout or environment. Your choices are limited to existing office buildings, caves, etc. Recreating a replica of your high school so that you can give that bully a swirly in the girls bathroom is out of the question. Spawn locations are and attacks used by NPCs is also out of your control due to exploit concerns.

So how do you know which missions are great, and which ones are just grinder levels to earn some extra experience? One of the best features of the Mission Architect tool is the criteria-based search function and the five-star rating and feedback system built into it. The highest rated games are placed into a Hall of Fame so that players can easily access them. NCsoft will also have a Developer’s Choice section to highlight their favorite missions as well.

Anytime someone completes one of your missions and gives it a favorable rating, you’ll receive tickets that can be used to unlock new NPCs or environments to use in future missions that you create. Players that try out missions will also receive full XP, in addition to tickets that they can use to purchase loot. This makes City of Heroes the first MMO that lets you level entirely on user-generated content. All player-generated content will be directly accessible from any Architect Entertainment building located throughout the world, which means you don’t have to waste time traveling.

Check out the City of Heroes Architect Edition Screenshots!

We've also got several City of Heroes Architect Edition Videos that will show you some of the new features, as well as show you how easy it is to create a mission.

As a current and long time player, it is indeed a great system. It is nice to be able to do different things outside of the usual setup. Come on by and join the fun and check it out for yourselves.

Forgot to mention that they're also offering a free 14 day trial for both PC and Mac. They're not even requiring a credit card :o)

A long time player here as well, and I can honestly say this has breathed some new life into things. Some players are pretty brilliant at creating stories.

Oh, and the first round of upgrades to the Architect have already been announced, so its just going to keep getting better.

Yeah the Mish Archtect is a really great tool for user created content. Its really fun and this game was even great without it. If you are wanting a Superhero MMO while this is the only choice it deffinitly doesnt dissapoint.

Also Champions Online comes out July 14th, for those of you who played the old PnP Champions Game its from that license, and if you havent played it you should deffinitly give it a shot. :)

Sounds like a neat mechanic... Never much a CoH fan though. More a WoW guy myself... Until all the original writers/developers left, now it's poop. Went cheap and started playing Runes of Magic... It's not polished, or quite complete, but it has some nice options that should be in most MMOs, and the people don't act like 13 year old griefers. Plus hey, it's free to play.

I'm another long time player of City of Heroes, the Mission Archetect system has been a huge hit with the players. While CoH has been around for five years, and there is plenty of "official" content, the amount of player-made content is two or three times the "official" content in just a few short weeks. Some of the missions are quite clever, and most are very challenging.

One part that makes it so good is the amazingly flexible character creator. While you can use characters already in the game (of which there are many!), you can create your own that can look like almost anything of a standard humanoid shape.

Players get to rate the missions of other players. Some are made to fit within the storyline of City of Heroes or Villains, while many are completely new. My favorites are the funny ones where the mission is well designed with spoofs or puns. (One example is the mission where you get to fight "Windy, Jack in the Barrel and McArchVillain" and their fast-food minions while you rescue "the King." The various comments by the characters are nice spoofs of Fast-food slogans.)

LEEE777, actually City of Heroes has already been optioned for a movie and a possible follow-up television series. One of the underlying stories to the game involves an Alien Invasion fought off by huge numbers of Super Heroes, and the sacrifice of one special team of heroes who use the alien technology to go back to the Rikti Home World to sacrifice themselves to stop the Invasion. The Game includes a Rikti War Zone and occasional random alien Rikti invasions whenever a particular series of missions has been completed.

First of all, I just want to say that CoH Rocks! It's way better than WoW... As a former CoH addict(and possibly its greatest hero) I don't see the point of releasing more issues when the game doesn't work well at all with newer technology. I must say, this sounds REALLY cool, but i can't play it for longer than an hour without crashing since i got my new graphics card. :-( And when i tried to get tech support all they could say was that since the game was old, it doesn't run well with new video drivers, and to revert to an older driver. Problem is, my Video card just came out in January 2009, there are no older drivers for it. So, I had to hang up my tights. The game also doesn't work well with SLI/Crossfire...

So, what would REALLY be awesome is an Issue that solves/updates the technological problems of the game. OR Just come out with a City of Heroes 2 already...

MoonDoggyX,

They release new issues because they still have a subscriber base of between 100 and 200 thousand players who are expecting content updates. The thing is, the game industry is complicated.
Say there are 200k players already subscribed to the game. The guys who are making the content updates for those players (an established 14% of NCSoft's income) are artists, writers, and programmers. They're not the money-men, and they aren't the movers, shakers, and decision makers. The guys who would plan a CoH 2 are entirely different people and they make their decisions seperately.

Likewise, the guys who could fix the tech issues with new cards, and with Vista, are not artists, content-writers, base-design specialists, or mappers. So its very possible for the hundreds of thousands who still play the game to get content updates while other folks work behind the scenes to fix technical issues.

However, if it gives you any hope, one of the developers recently said that they have hired special developers to update the graphics.

@Optionfour

Thanks for the perspective. Like i said, I love the game, I thinks its the best MMO I've ever played, I'm just kinda jade because i couldn't play :-) The fact that they are making an effort to update the graphics does give me a little hope!
